HDR as SDR

I have a JVC PJ, the RS400. The Gamma D is broken and i have been told to view HDR as SDR when viewing HDR dvd’s and Streaming.

Can we explore this alittle.......

As of Feb 20th still looking for a Marantz SR7010

Do you have a Panasonic UB820? If not, you may want to consider getting one, or a player similar to it, as it can be used to send HDR as SDR with the BT.2020 color space and then tone map the picture to give a better image for the projector than if straight HDR is used.

Projectors don’t typically have the brightness to properly display HDR, so a player that can tone map the HDR highlights allows the projector to display HDR convincingly without having high lumens or nits in this case. The bt2020 is the color space used for 4K movies, which you mentioned as wide color gamut. If you are sending a 1080p signal, you will use the rec 709 color space and don’t need to worry about tone mapping since it’s already SDR. Does that help?

The Panny 824 is great, however that won't help for streaming HDR (not sure if OP needs that - but that's my concern that I'm trying to solve with the same projector.
Someone had posted a thread describing a workaround via HDFury Vortex - if anyone knows, please post the link to that thread.

Im looking for a global solution to my aging JVC so it acts a bit more like a Pj that is plug and play....as to HDR

You can't go wrong with the UB820. It will allow you to pass SDR BT.2020 and do tone mapping for 4k discs, and I believe for any apps you run off the 820 (like Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc). You may also want to research MadVR to see if something like that could work for you in your situation.

the UHD conversions are great- really stunning, but the apps it shuts off the dynamic iris and other issues (hence I'm looking for a streaming solution for my own setup)

Good to know. I don't really use the streaming apps myself. Thanks!
