I was able to make it to Eddy's this past Sunday. I brought my Sierra's over to listen to mine vs. his EX upgraded versions. Looks like yet another upgrade in my future, I liked how they sounded. More detailed and the better mid-range was noticeable. I liked his listening room setup too. Sounded great.

I also listened to some bass scenes I'm used to so I could hear his ported Rythmiks. We didn't get too crazy so as not to cause an issue with his wife, which is understandable.

George, it was great having you over to hear the two systems. Glad you liked it!

My wife would disagree about the "not too crazy" part! She said even with door closed she got blasted.

Lol. Luckily I brought my wife to distract your wife when we were jamming. George those little speakers before sounded great. I can't imagine how much better they sound.

My last calibration set my front speakers to Large and I was just watching Youtube videos of music and I couldn't figure out why my sub was doing nothing at all. Once I changed back to Small my sub came to life. And then my wife came in the room and asked if I raised the volume because her wall is shaking.

Ron, you and I were upstairs listening to music with the door shut, which has perimeter acoustical weather stripping, so my wife doesn't really hear it very much unless she's in the right spot and I have it cranked. Even then it is not very loud downstairs.

It's when George and I were playing scenes from various movies in the great room and she was in the bedroom with the door shut that she got blasted. Lots of hardwood flooring and no insulation around the bedroom door make for poor isolation.

Yeah, I'm fortunate that I can listen to music at, and above, sane levels without fear of upsetting my wife!

I handed George my Rat Shack SPL meter to see what we were pushing. It was reading 90+ db on peaks approaching 100db. I backed it down, but I could have easily pushed it higher. I have to consider the safety of my hearing.

I'd love to have someone run REW in there to get a picture of what's happening, especially with the bass. These are putting out some freakishly low bass for being 2-way speakers having a 6" woofer...... with a phase plug eating up some surface area. It bends my brain!

Eddy are we still getting together tonight? If so and if the weather isn't that bad. I could possibly bring my Mic and computer by to run a sweep. Does that Halo have HDMI input at all? If not it will be a bit more difficult but it can still be done if you have some say 10' long rca cables. I could check to see if I do. I would need to find my stereo mini Y adapter. But it can be done.

I've been sick for a few days. Feeling better but not sure that I'm not contagious at this point. I'd better hold off for a week.

I will warn my wife! LOL!

Just keep in mind that the music setup is geared to a single seat listening position, so only 1 person gets the perfect sound. I will bring folding chairs up there but they will be way out of any decent listening window. We will have to rotate!

Ron, I see you've updated your sig photo. Excellent!! I was about to suggest that but glad you beat me to the punch.

I'd like to give a big shout out to Ron.....

Thanks for bringing your equipment over last night so we could run those REW sweeps and get a picture of what's going on in my music room!

I'm hoping (In the back of my mind) that either the UMIK-1 was not calibrated properly, it was not pointed correctly, or both! I was reading up a little on the MiniDSP site about using the UMIK, and it said to point the mic at the speakers. Also, and I'm not positive here, it looks as if it tells you to measure 1 speaker at a time. I'm lacking in knowledge when it comes to REW so I am just trying to educate myself. That dip...... or valley in the 45-80hz range is crazy.

I think it may be worth purchasing a UMIK-1 and getting the free REW software loaded on a laptop so I can play around with the speaker placement.

Oh, and thanks Greg and George for enduring those fun REW sweeps!

Eddy if you point the Mic at the speakers you are trying to take the room influence out of the sweep. If you point it up and use the 90deg cal file you are taking the room into account. So I am hoping I can get my cal files back by using the serial number. I will have to check.

But anyways I had fun. And time obviously flew by. Before you knew it it was after 9 pm. But thanks for having me. And nice seeing George, Gregg and the host Eddy last night. This Thursday thing is getting serious folks. Lots of good music and conversation. Next time probably Greg's house.

I gotcha. Since you did not have the required 90deg cal file that could have been part of the issue. And since we did not measure each speaker individually as suggested by REW we goofed that up too. But it was neat to see how that software works.

Now meeting each Thursday: The He-man A/V Lover's Club!

Thanks for the good time last night Ed, your house is very nice. The Sierras were very impressive but again I'm not accustomed to the near field imaging so it was a little different than what I'm used to. Next stop, my house.

Greg, thanks for the compliment!

I get what you are saying about the difference between my near(er) field setup vs yours. When I was listening to yours I had a similar thought process. Yours sounds awesome, but the soundfield/imaging is different because you sit much further away.

I had a few thoughts after everyone left. One of those thoughts having to do with possibly locating my sub either to the side or behind the listening chair and running REW again. Hopefully the center of the width of the room is not a bass black hole that cannot be fixed.

I was going to mention putting ypur sub on the left or right wall closer to you last night. But figured that would take even longer. Was the sweeps coming out of both speakers? I was on the floor and going on 3 hrs sleep. So I was a bit out of it last night.

If the L/R inputs on the preamp were getting a signal from your laptop then yes, both speakers and the sub were playing.

You can change it in the settings of rew. At least you select which channel when using an HDMI. I will have to see if it defaults to left or both in the settings tab of rew. When selecting for HDMI it defaults I believe to left channel or you can select right channel or both. I know when I run sweeps at home it is of only the left channel first. But again that is when using HDMI out of the computer instead of the stereo mini to left right rca's

Ok guys, I tried something out......

My P5 has a sub level adjustment knob which I leave at "0". You set the sub to where you want for a reference, and if you want/need to boost/lower it you would use this knob rather than have to mess with the sub's amp. So...I gave it a slight boost over the weekend and listened to a bunch of music..... Christina Aquilera, Justin Bieber, etc. etc.

Well, what they say about bass accounting for over 30% of our perceived quality of sound must have merit. I'm leaving it this way for now. There is some subsonic stuff that I was not really getting before, some tactile, massage-your-butt-through-your-chair and move the floor stuff. I knew my sub was capable of this, and I just thought that it was just missing in a lot of the music. Now I'm getting that. Crazy what a small boost in the sub does. In addition, the sound is fuller but not boomey. That's to be expected with the boost. I'm not sure how "accurrate" the sound is this way, but I like when my chair gives me a massage and the floor gives my feet one!
