Hey, I have a friend in Parkville that is wanting a recommendation for a home theater designer / installer. Knowing the range of competencies out there and his previously failed attempt to work with someone, I'd like to know who you folks would send a friend to. Our go-to list is currently nil for the KC area, so I appreciate your recommendation for this and future leads.

Cheers,
Chris

I wasn't impressed with any of them when I was looking, and I'm pretty sure I went to them all. So I eventually went with Nyal for the design and handled the construction with various contractors.

I know Shawn with Erskine isn't too far away either, though I'm not sure you'd include them as "local."

I'm in charge of planning a corporate Employees' Club event (family friendly picnic) at my work for ~200ish people. Anyone have any solid facility ideas?

Places we've used in the past,

Zoo
Faulkner's Ranch
Worlds of Fun
Paradise Park
Swope Park
Powell Gardens

Ideally they'd be facilities that offer a meal option (but standalone catering a nice city park facility is also a possibility)

Archaea's 9.8.4 Home Theater Room
(13) JBL CBT 70j-1 | Denon x7200wa | Sherbourn PA 7-350 amplifier | (8) Ultimax 18" sealed subwoofers | (4) iNuke DSP 6000 amplifiers | (4) MB Quart 12" subwoofers mounted direct mounted to Berkline theater chairs BOSS style | Epson 5040UB Projector | Jamestown 144" acoustic transparent 2.35:1 screen w/ Seymour XD fabric

Chris,
I can't really speak to dedicated home theater construction around this area. There is a local guy named Jim, @tatersly who builds houses, and does impeccable quality work (after seeing his own home he built that he lives in). I don't think he's purposely looking for side work typically, but he might be worth reaching out to incase he has a open window between a house project? Another forum member here, @d_c , has quite the craftman's thumb as well. He alternates between a Fireman /EMT and DIY extraordinaire in 48 hour increments. He does pick up side jobs from time to time, and having seen his work he also would be a great candidate (if he's available) for some solid home theater construction ---- assuming the customer has some flexibility on timeframe. Neither of these guys are officially in that market (and perhaps neither has time) - I just know and trust them, and think their work is 100% solid. It's who I'd hire, if they were available and I needed such.

As to calibrations...

@desertdome is spinning up a calibration service and has done a calibration @jedimastergrant, @Stoked21, and @bozee3 theater in the area recently - though he lives in Omaha he doesn't seem to hesitate to drive to KC. @umr has the AccuCal service and recently did Hodor theater recently that belongs to @ChldsPlay @Randy Bessinger has used several different calibration services over the years and could probably be a good contact to gather some feedback through PM.
I'm sure there are others - and I'm not intentionally slighting anyone who I didn't mention. Those are just the ones that immediately come to mind based on recent discussion in the thread.

There's also a decent group of knowledgeable DIY type enthusiasts here who won't hesitate to assist a new forum member in getting some unpaid advice, setup tips, or even assist with an initial audio calibration. Feel free to link your customer to this thread if that situation applies.

Putting out a bit of a feeler...

I have two QSC K10s coming soon and I am wanting to compare them with a few other options on the market as well. I have talked with some of you about doing a small speaker comparison.

From what I can tell if we have amps for any passive speakers I am able to level match and play back up to 8 speakers or 4 pairs from my mixing board.

So after talking a bit about it this weekend here is the line up I am hoping to get.

QSC K10 Active speakers. Very little information about these and what is out there deals with DJing. I have only heard them in a store.

Mackie C200 Passive speakers. Huge value with an MSRP around $200 or so. Archaea currently uses 11 of these in his theater.

Mackie SRM450 Active. I would like to hear the 350 model but Doug/ D_C has the 450 so the 450 it is. Also a great value. I have heard these a handful of times and they are great for their price point.

JTR Single 8 Passive. These still seem to be the king of surround speakers. Hoping we can get a pair from someone local for this little test.

This would put us somewhere around $200, $500, $700, $900 and sizes 8", 10", 10", 12". Prices do not equal sizes. Just in order of smallest to larges on both accounts. Yes, all of these can be found cheaper. Just giving MSRP as far as I know.

I currently don't have a large space to host but if we keep it small I could put something together. If a lot of people are interested we may need to find a volunteer to host.

Any thoughts or suggestions? If I get enough interest I will start a thread.

Depending on when this speaker shootout will occur, I'm in the middle of making some custom ported volt 10's. I'd bring those.

With some feedback I have received it seems middle to late July would workout the best. Personally, looking at the calendar July 16th looks about as promising of a date as I have ever seen. This gives us time to plan everything out and and drum up interest.

How does July 16th work for everyone else?

For switching I would reccomend a stack of identical amps or a multi channel amp. Crown and QSC and a few others make 8 channel models with capability to take input signals and daisy chain to all channels - but indepdent gain control each pair (channel) means you can level match them. That should make the amps identical for all pairs, and easy to switch. If you use multiple identical amps either turn each on and off - or kill and provide signal. Those selector boxes don't work well and change the sound signature with the impedance protection circuits.

Stoked21 has a rack full of identical crown amps, I nearly forgot and Luke kamp has the Sherbourn 7-350 which would work too.

@carp Sorry, I can't take June off your hands. I've got 2 weddings and 2 family reunions to knock out this month. Bleh.

I could do July for a movie night, but that's up to everyone else since it sounds like there's a speaker shoot out brewing. ;-)

No worries. It sounds like we are having a tough enough time coordinating the GTG, so I'll take another month sometime. I have the minidsp with Dirac on the way so I'll be busy trying to figure that out this month anyway.

I think they may have pre-dug our general area, but yeah.. I realize there could be some time. AT&T was working on getting their fiber dug too, so I'm hoping there was some competitive spirit there.

I'm ready for fiber though, and not from AT&T.
