Extended beta by a day. I might try to embarrass myself tonight if I get a chance.

@desertdome did you try beta on PC? What are the options for Dolby and dts immersive audio on an htpc? Any special equipment to buy. Licensing stuff? How is the system EQ? Or is it just manually choosing which speaker layout you have. Don't you use audio lense? Any more affordable options?

Well, that seems.... kinda lame. I get that Atmos "can be" just an algorithm but I was really hoping to see them use it in the same function as they are for movies with overhead channels. It sounds like they are just using it as a mixing algorithm.

I'm surprised you aren't spending your time playing your favorite game series now that it's been released for the PS4.

Was on for a few matches tonight. Died a million deaths. A few to both Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. I am not an expert at evaluating online fps games since I NEVER play them but I have heard plenty of people complaining. It seems like a fun enough game to me. Mainly I just think they nailed the audio and video. And that is enough for me to fork over the money and give it a try.

A few things I noticed while scrolling through the menus.

Under audio settings.

Output Configuration Menu.

There is an output configuration with 2 options. One for 2.0 enhanced stereo and one for 5.1/7.1 surround. Mine was set to 2.0 as a default. Not sure why.

Dynamic Range Menu.

It has 4 options. Headphone, Narrow, Medium, and Wide. Mine was set to Medium as default.

The description for Medium states "This is the default setting, which has a large difference in volume between the quietest and loudest sounds. Select this option for setups which can handle full range audio, including separate hi-fi systems."

The Wide setting states "This setting has the largest difference in volume between the quietest and loudest sounds. Select this option for professional speaker and home cinema setups. This setting is automatically used for Dolby ATMOS TM."

I changed the settings to 5.1/7.1 and to Wide.

It made a quite a difference! Tim was over the other night and it was dramatically improved by comparison.

So I am not sure exactly what is going on with the whole ATMOS in games and on consoles thing but it shows up in the menus for sure. Will be interesting to find out.

I've found that people out there just get so good, so fast at some of these games. It's virtually impossible to keep up. I mean, when you binge play for 72 hours and don't leave your room the second the game comes out, you get good fast. Some people have to work for a living though and can only devote a few hours a couple nights a week to gaming.

That's why I still much prefer the "Story Mode" of video games. Objectives are more clear, and the game is linear for the most part, as opposed to cyclical with online war sessions. Don't get me wrong, when MW3 was out I was king at that game. I could absolutely work people, and knew all the levels and such. There's just too much fun stuff coming out in the near future, I know I won't be able to keep up. It also gives me caution for Halo5 as it seems to be primarily Online-based as opposed to story based, but I could be completely wrong about that.

So I am an old fool. I thought that San Andreas would be a fun buy in 3D. This is one of the worst movies i have ever spent money on. I think the producers knew it so there are breasts and steroids. So disappointingl Poor Paul Giamanti a reallyngood actor. It really gives a bad name to science. I hate it when that happens, but happens regularly in now...

Hey guys....Didn't know there was a KC group.....Local MSEE who has worked in DSP and Analog semiconductor industry for a while (worked for most of the semi manufs you know). I just finished my HT v.2.0 after 6 months of work here in Lenexa. Starting v3.0 this weekend before changing every thing else out in the next 2 re-works. Not a gamer here but love my Atmos setup for movies. I am moving to 7.2.4 in the next few weeks from 5.2.4 setup now. Images show old speakers and old rack which is all getting swapped starting tomorrow. Wired for 27 speakers, 17 installed plus 2 subs but selling lots of the equipment. Moving to Marantz or Denon 11.2, installing 8 XLS1500 stereo amps and getting my new Monitor Audio Bronze LCR tomorrow. Ripped out more of the front carpentry to accommodate the floorstanders and ripping out and installing taller rack rails tomorrow.

Hope to get to chat Atmos with some of you.

Derek

Hello Derek,

Welcome to our thread. I'll add your name to the first post as a local AVSforum member.

If you are interested, consider attending a movie night (jedimastergrant is hosting the next one in the next week or two last I knew) to meet some of the locals, or perhaps even consider hosting a movie night for some of the local active avsforum members to show off your space in person.

Hey guys, maybe against policy??? IDK.

If anyone is interested in Yamaha Aventage RX-A2040, Polk PSW-505 sub, some DT speakers send me a PM. I essentially have an entire Atmos 5.1.2 system for sale on the serious cheap here in Lenexa. It's all less than 4-6 months old, was bought new from authorized vendors, and has seen very few hours of actual use (I'm going to estimate 20 hours). Theater took 6 months to build and equipment was here for fitting/mounting and setup. However, I've only been able to use most it for just a few weeks and have since changed it all out. All works great but just moving to prepro, floorstanders, acoustic suspension, and 11 chs vs. 9. This all works better in my room which I hadn't planned for. So my loss and your win.

I never say no to a good sale! Whatcha got? And how cheap is super cheap? You and I may have very different opinions on those words being put together.

And your room looks cool. Not sure if you bought your new speakers already. If not maybe visit one of the many members with some high efficiency horn speakers and give them a whirl. Only way to go in my opinion. Welcome

I'm actually not a fan of horns at all. I heard Klipsch back in my HS/College days and detested the horns. They were just bright, harsh and sterile for my liking....That's been 20 years, but I still couldn't bring myself to use horns. I'm sure with today's DSP algorithms, EQ, etc they would be better and I wouldn't mind them. Plus I have complications with my carpentry and placement with regards to passive radiators or ported reflex. That's why I'm swapping all of my speakers and subs. I have a giant bass trap behind the carpentry and any ports or radiators will just boom back there, muddy things up, and transfer to the main level. I can bung port to solve the problem but lose bass response that way.

I was stuck between KEF, Monitor and Martin Logan for LCR. Ended up going Monitor as the bang for the buck was incredible. I could go on and on about them. I know there's better and I've owned much much better setups (Stereophile industry leading setups as a matter of fact). But this is a a theater that is explicitly for movies not for music. As long as I have dynamics, SPL, and bw then it's great. Besides with 13 speakers going in an 11.2 setup, a high-end multi thousand dollar LCR is going to be less noticeable in my opinion. I'll stick with my new <$2K LCR.

Agreed. It is just embarrassing for me to even try to get online and play anything. Usually ends up taking the fun out of it. Part of it is frustration with the controller. I do get better as I play through several hours. But, I will never spend the time to have the maps and strategy down like those guys.

I think it is sad that young gamers are preferring the online experience more than single player. New games need to include online gaming as a bullet point even if the game is not really cut out to play well online. And there are only a certain amount of resources at most game companies. So something has to give. It is usually to the detriment of the single player story driven experience.

I have high hopes for Halo 5 story mode. I was discouraged to find out they decided to scratch the split screen co op mode. What a bummer. I guess it is too much to ask the texting generation to even sit in the same room with their friends. Apparently all their relationships have to be online.

The best time I had with the beta was split screen co op with Tim.

I covet the little time I can spend getting lost in a deep single player story driven experience. Shut the door. No interruptions. No one else around. Just total immersion.

Well the deliveries have started for round 3 of my Atmos HT rebuild. LCR speakers, 6 of the XLS, my new rack rails and screws, speaker grill cloth, some shelves and vents are here.....300 lbs today and more coming this week. UPS guy is loving me!!

Just need to pick my new prepro and then slowly start replacing some surround speakers....Still can't decide between Marantz SR7010 or AV7702mk2 or Denon X6200. May even wait and see if the Emotiva, Anthem, or Arcam with Dirac hit my budget and are shipping soon. Will find out after CEDIA.

Like the theater. Unique choice for the display. I bet it looks fantastic though I have never had a chance to see a 4K display.

I am having a movie night this Friday at 815 unless the Royals end up playing at night. In that case I will postpone it till next week. I live near K7/K10 so not far for you.

I hope I get a chance to hear your immersive audio set up once it is dialed in.

I have heard the Monitor Audio Platinums at a friends place also in Lenexa and they were fantastic especially for music.

@Stoked21 Nice looking room you have there. What makes you want to move away from the Yamaha and into the Denon/Marantz receivers? I am looking at doing the opposite is why I ask. Are you now running two Klipsch R-115SW subs or are you doing something different if you are selling off the Polk?

You should definitely try to make one of the get togethers. We are a pretty active group.

Rear sub is in the equip closet facing out. The polk is ported to the back so a lot of booming under the stairs. I'm going acoustic suspension likely SVS 12" for the back for more of that mid-bass slap vs the booming front ported Klipsch.

As for the Yamaha, I really want 13 ch pre-outs and Yamaha doesn't offer. Plus, the wifi is stronger on the others, has Audyssey, option of Auro if needed. Lastly, the Yamaha 11 ch prepro is $700 more for less features than the M&D.

Will try to make it to a meeting sometime.

KC Xmas in October attached...Heading to the game so that would finish off the day if we win!!!

That's one sexy looking stack of amps you have there!

I don't know what SVS sub you are looking at but I happen to have an SVS PB-12NSD I need to sell. PM me if you are interested. I just upgraded to a DIY setup.

Thanks for the info on the receivers. I have been looking at the new Yamaha and Pioneer units with Atmos. I'm not in a big hurry to upgrade but was looking at getting away from Audyssey and adding some of the new features my current receiver lacks.
