Hello fellow Calgarians...... well technically I am just outside of Calgary but very close
I am very much a NOOB and on a steep learning curve as I am doing my basement build right now.
If you have room (or patience) for someone that has very little experience but lots of desire to learn I'm interested

One day I will start the new theater....... one day..... THAT DAY HAS ARRIVED

Lol, my room is nothing special. Just a family room that doubles as my screening room. Lol.. if you're up for meeting some fellow geeks, should be a good time.

So does a Saturday or Sunday work better for everyone?
I've been talking with turbojohn a bit and if we can get this started early enough to have time we could a/b a few different brands of amps if you guys are interested?
I've got emotiva and crown amps in house along with my clone. John is willing to bring over one of his monster power amps.
I've got the 1099's up and running and they are super revealing and dynamic. Just got my Uxl's dialed in last weekend.
Let's get some input coming as to what you guys would like to do.

You guys should demo that pretty red JTR Captivator that John has.

On the amp compare (assuming using the same speaker to compare) - use a multimeter to ensure you have the exact same output at the end of the speaker wire, and sanity check with an SPL meter. I'll be interested to read the results if that's the direction you take. Having done a couple of those types of comparisons in the past I have formulated my own views on the matter, which I won't relay yet. It's fun to experiment with that. Do it sighted, then do it blind and see who can pick out what if possible?

If you have a t-amp to compare with you should add that into the mix.

I'd like to take one of my Uxl's over to John's and do a head to head with his captivator.
We ran a few rew sweeps last weekend and his rythmik was actually giving better response. I'll need to go back and measure again, I deleted the graphs.. (facepalm)

Yes all amp comparison will be done on my 1099's.. in pure direct reference mode.

Weird --- Captivator 1400 should trounce the Rythmik in SPL (~5dB more at around port tune and ~3dB all the way up) and reference flat FR - unless it's a room or placement specific interaction that favors the Rythmic for FR.
Two ports open is flatter than one port open for the Rythmik FR, but the FR rolls off at about 10hz higher in the two port mode which isn't a fair apples to apples comparison to the Cap.

Are your UXL sealed or ported? That would be a fun comparison, but if the UXL is sealed - one vs. one I'd put my money on the ported Cap without question. If UXL is properly ported it will very likely be a horse race --- the subwoofer drivers should be of similar quality between the UXL and the Cap.

Sealed UXL (only UXL on data-bass) vs. JTR 1400 (ported) at max output sweep

It's definitely a room placement issue. The cap was all over the place for response. The rythmik was fairly smooth.
My Uxl's are ported to 18Hz and are about 5.5cuft. I think it would be an awesome head to head. One of these days we'll do it.

There hasn't been a person yet that didn't grin when I opened it up. I was just waiting for it.. I wish we could have done some different eq settings for you guys to hear. But we always end up talking the day away. Lol.. anytime ya want to come hang, chat and watch a flick feel free to send me a message.

And yes.. if I had my way I'd add 4 more subs.

LOL ya I bet you wait for it. I was surprised the difference the eq made when we were listening to music and you turned it on and off..... made me a believer
I'll take you up on that... its useless for me to try and talk to my wife about this stuff she just rolls her eyes

NO NO I didn't mean you needing more subs... damb I couldn't imagine 4 more in your space... I meant my thoughts of 2 in my space would just seam inadequate now.
I am also liking the idea of near field

Yes yes.. MOAR !!!!
Yeah my wife is the same, I'm a firm believer in big powerful well designed subs. It just adds so much "depth" to the movies.
