Calgary, Alberta.. Canada. Get Together

Are there any guys in town here interested in doing a get together? I've been doing a lot of work in my family/theatre room and wouldn't mind having some like minded guests come by.. If we can get a couple guys to bring some speakers or subs or some other gear...
I'm super interested in hearing some diy speaker designs and some tube equipment, I have some diy subs and some jtr speakers I'd be willing to showcase. An emotiva xmc-1 is also in the rack so something to contend with that would be awesome.
Regards,
Ivor

I would be interested. I don't have a lot to offer other than my 8 cuft LLT Dayton 18" and a set to paradigm monitor 11s with a center that could be compared to other DIY SEOS and the like.

I'm in too. I've got three weeks total left in Calgary, so lets get it done this weekend or next latest

I've got nothing to bring but enthusiasm, as I've sold my XPA-5, Ascend Acoustics 340SE, etc etc stuff

Oh, and a few beers or what have you of course!

So Fella's, how do we want to go about this ? Should we get together at each others homes so that we don't need to rip our systems apart or do we want to compare gear in a single place ? We've got 5-6 guys here that want to do this so let's throw out some ideas.. I'm game for checking out each others setups, I don't really expect anyone to try and transport their gear.

Sounds good, I've got my in-laws coming for dinner at 5ish so as long as we're all wrapped up by then, we should be in business...

Hey guys feel free to post detailed thoughts on my setup, I can take constructive criticism.
I know I need some more room treatments, anything else you guys would like to add for improving?

FattyKid - Ivor - thank you for a great get together. Appreciate your family opening up their castle to us to ruin the peace.

Some of my favourite observations on first glance:

a) Great almighty mother of the heavens - you have a ton of Blu Rays, a really impressive collection. I like the fact that you don't need to brag about it (or any of your stuff) either, just love that.

b) Massive speakers hanging about in a relatively small space - just eye candy for an enthusiast.

c) Stealthy woofage - who would have known about the twin 21's nearfield until you either played some Super 8 footage/ music/ told someone they were there.

d) Love your collectables and posters and decorating efforts. Takes time and thought for sure.

I did take some notes about the speakers that I will offer here. I wrote this as I listened without prejudice, with a noobs reference point.

"Awesome imaging. Soundstage is impressive particularly with two channel only. Depending on source, either Dirac or Preset2 was preferable. With centre channel un-angled upwards to MLP, it sounded quite muddy with a reduced soundstage.

Sibilance on two brief occasions, some harshness on the highs in the Super 8 train wreck scene. Some muffled mids dependant on source, particularly with the headbanging stuff. Impressive sub keeps up with very quick headbanging metal bass.

Tons of headroom. Powerful JTR 888's, lovely bass reinforcement in couch from twin 21's. Transparent speakers, with blu ray Adele concert just great. Audio bliss"

I am wondering if more EQ work could be done to the above concerns, but those are mine. Drove home with one word repeatedly coming out my mouth - "Wow".

ps: confirmed that -5DB on your system is akin to +10DB on mine. Watched "Lone Survivor" on blu ray at -5DB on my system last night and it was really immersive, but less so than yours

Always a good time man! I could listen to those JTR Triple 8's all day and twice on Sunday. And those 21's behind the couch could replace ones masseuse/Chiropractor. Nice to meet all you fellow AV geeks and just shoot the breeze over a beverage. Love these things because everyone has something different that others have always wanted to hear or try.....I find it to be almost like car meets lol. We definitely have to keep the ball rolling and do this again soon!

Thank you very much George , I wish we could have done this long ago.. Instead of three weeks before you leave town. Feel free to visit again before you do go, I'd appreciate some help in placing my speakers for optimal sound. I think I'm going to start on some room treatments to cut down on the midrange "glare" when getting close to reference. I wouldn't consider your views noobish at all, it seemed we actually liked the same attributes and heard the same deficiencies so I value any input you'd like to offer.

@darklord700 please post your thoughts, and man I would love to hear your krell's. I'd even bring over my pair of triple8's to side by side. What was the second cd of yours we played ? I would love to get my hands on it.

Anything we could do different next time to increase enjoyment ?

Hi Fattykidd, here's the second CD we listend to, Frente - Bizzare Love Triangle

You have the bass down pat. Occasionally, there's certain harshness to the high which I think was caused by the lower ceiling. I have the same problem too as I have a room with low ceiling. Room treatment is a whole different ball game as all rooms are different and what works for one might not work for other.

Your DLP output very good black in a not entirely blackened room, it should only get better after the sun goes down.

Like George said, probably the easiest way to improve is to try different EQ and see which one you liked best.

Thanks again and let's keep this going. We can definitely do a A B test between my Krell and your triple8s.

Ivor, I am wondering out aloud if this isnt the greatest opportunity to learn about room treatments and the effect they have on your audio experience.

Lord knows you have incredible speakers there, and lotsa firepower. Some might say - "never enough!" and thats often said with a tinge of honesty in the joke

But truthfully, that moment when we moved your Right JTR a few inches to the right and the soundstage centre shifted so beautifully to be balanced, had me thinking.....

I moved my own Ascend 340's out just 12-15" in an awkard position (can't stay there long term because of the kids messing with it factor), and the soundstage widened about 4 feet. The centre dissapeared because the LR were just 6" in front of it. I had to boost the Centre +3 on the Onkyo 818 receiver to get it to resolve nicely with the front two. Interesting! Learned more in that one 5 minute stretch compared to equalising them in the last year.

Placement and then room treatments are where I think you will find incredible learning experiences with your very beautiful, very powerful system. Great opportunity to learn how to DIY your bass traps/diffusers/absorbers/etc and how it affects your experience as a result.

I'm kinda jealous to be honest

Time is a massive premium on time for me as I prepare to leave beautiful Alberta, but my thoughts are with you and your future audio curve and of course, all things audio - period

ps: edit: you cost me $23 as the Adele Blu Ray lives in my house now

It's got the best sounding acoustic guitars I've ever heard. I really wanted to play it for you guys but it was on my computer...
I'm so glad I could share Adele with you, I have to thank John for turning me onto it.

So I went over to turbojohn's place today and watched a movie and listened to some tunes...
Well I've gotta say if I was to ever go back to a commercial subwoofer, the Rythmik fv15 would be it.
This sub plays so CLEANLY it's almost unbelievable. I was extremely impressed with the way those lsi's sounded on the metallica track we listened to. Thanks for the showing John.
