Glad I found this group, count me in! Moved here last year, now live in Ben Avon Heights.
Have been a long standing-but very "lapsed" member of AVS Forum. Would love to meet up and eventually host. Tell me what type of beer/wine/spirits to bring!

Bob

Still interested in doing something either late fall or late January 2019.

Could be a GTG or a home theater crawl depending on what people are interested in.

Nice. I'm near St Clair hospital. Only need one or two more volunteers in or around Lebo/USC.

Welcome to the forum, Mike.

Hopefully, we can round up 3 or 4 volunteers who live within reasonable proximity of SH Village mall.

Our two set-ups are likely very different, so that will be fun and informative for area enthusiasts. I was planning to pick 3 or so noteworthy widescreen Ultra-HD movies to demo. Probably a couple digital shot such as Lucy and at least one 35mm or maybe 65mm (Gotta see what 2001 looks like later this week!).

Anyhow, if things come together, you're welcome to stop by to demo and advise on what makes a good impression.

I am not aware of anyone else in the south hills on AVS - the one guy I knew moved to CA but there has to be others.

The past GTG we had was focused on subwoofers and I had a number of movie and music clips. I figured for this I would do something similar. I could show two systems. My living room has a 65 LG OLED 3D TV a with JTR 212 HTR for the L-C-R speakers, DIY sound group Volt 8’s for surrounds and 4 powersound triax subwoofers. Everything is driven by a denon 4400. It is a living room with no sound treatments.

My game room has a 120 inch acoustically transparent screen and a Sony 45ES projector. I have lots of room treatments (GIK) and 3 JTR 215RT speakers (LCR) behind the screen each fed with a crest audios cc4000 4000w amp. There are also 2 JTR S2 subs (2 - 18 inch woofers and 4000w each) behind the screen and 2 more behind the couch. On top of the JTR subs are 4 midbass modules. Surrounds are 4 DIY sound group Volt 8’s. Pre-pro is a Onkyo 5509.

We could also demo my system I use in my garage and outside in the summer if we have time. We could pull in into the game room. It is 2 JTR 212 HTR’s with 2 JTR Growler subs. As you might guess, I really like JTR products

My systems are very audio centric. I have not had any of my displays professionally calibrated - just calibrated using the Disney WOW disk myself. I may get the OLED calibrated at some point but the room is pretty light and I am not sure if it would be worth it.

Ok, well, yeah, there should be someone in Mt Lebo or Upper St Clair. Would be nice to check out your primary home theater and maybe the living room along with mine in close succession. Gear in my signature. DIY 9" and 16" cylinder bass traps and about 70% triple black velvet. The Cary prepro was designed for audiophiles, as well as the power amp. Sound will be different, so a few folks can get some exposure to an uncommon approach. JVC calibrated by ChadB. Throws quite an image. I have around 100 UHDs.

Suppose we can hope someone chimes in. We also need a few more guests.

My two channel stereo is my primary interest, but not many are interested.

I have a good bit of velvet up in my game room also, would like more

I listen to a lot of 2 channel in my game room. I turn off the subs and listen to the 215RT’s full range. I probably do that 70% of the time I use that system and planned on some 2 channel in my demo.

Gretting's, Thanks for tagging me!

This is a cool idea, Id be down for it. Unsure availability as its far out and generally have to work those days, (Saturdays Sundays). Im not to far from -PIT-I drive to Washington everyday for work and that takes me 40min. But i did vote for the 20th.

Hopefully ill be further along in my DIY venture. Got 90% done building 5 full range towers and decided to go a different route. Got talked into altering my build and later was not happy lol.

My gear for now is 5 DIY Full-Range towers, that go scary low-Dual VBSS sub-woofers(in room getting 10HZ98db with 1 lol) which are also being changed to dual 15"ho as soon as someone buys them or the drivers and amp .
Working on getting a external amp- all i have atm is a Denon 4400H.

Great!

I don’t think it would happen this month.

Realistically would probability be after the new year - we haven’t really started talking about dates yet.

This thread is several years old and most of it is the planning of the get together we had at my house 2.5 years ago.

Hey everyone, I am located down by Wheeling,WV. About an hour south of Pittsburgh. I am currently planning on building a designated theater room in my basement. I need as much help as I can get on how to optimize my set up. This is all pretty overwhelming to me. Is there any shops/stores in the area that specializes in home theater equipment? I have been to the store in cranberry and plan to stop in there again soon. Is there anywhere else?

I can't recommend any stores in our region. Better to find various forums here. Try to identify reliable sources and slowly learn. That's what I did, but I've been an audiophile for many, many years. It took a few months to figure out front projection and weigh the various compromises. I wasn't doing any construction though. Rather a repurposing of a dedicated space.

I have a few new additions to my HT. I built BOSS platforms.

A member on the forums came up with a way to build a platform that gives you incredible tactile feedback down into the single digits for not much money. The basic idea is you take a sheet or two of plywood, cut it to the footprint of your couch, cut 2-3 11 inch holes to mount some JBL 12 inch drivers in and power them with about 80-120w of power. The key is using some 20 durometer sorbothane half sphere isolators. All in without the amp it costs about $150 per platform plus a couple hours of work. I built one for each couch and based on test tones get good movement down to 6hz.

The subs used are JBL GX-1200’s. They regularly go on sale for $29.99 at Best Buy. So $90 for 3. A piece of plywood is about $30 and about $30 for the iso’s

These are especially good if you are on a cement slab like I am in my basement. If I had found these before i could have saved many thousands of dollars in subs. They make almost no sound at all due to the open baffle design.

Here is a link to the thread on the development of the BOSS platform.

Anyone is welcome to come check them out.

If anyone is interested in a boss platform as described in my last post I have 5 extra drivers I bought from Best Buy for $30 each. I am going to return them at the end of the week if no one wants them.
