Chicago land and burbs area meet or crawl

Hey guys just wondering how many of us in the Chicago land area and burbs are on avs? I've hosted a few meets myself and plan to do another one in May but wondering if there's anyone else who would like to host one. We could also do a theater crawl which would be cool to.

There's 8 subs in the room and soon to be 12 and adding my HTPC in the next few days since the build was just completed by another avs member. The projector that I didn't mention is the Sony HW40. Next up on the list for goodies is a new avr then atmos and after that all new speakers from diysg through out the room.
The first meet I had 21 guys over from avs and then the next few gtg meets it was between 10-15 guys per meet so who else lives around me on this forum?
Guys coming so far...

I'm interested. I'll hopefully be finishing my Atmos install in 2 weeks and can demo Atmos. I'm in the Oak Park / River Forest area.

Chicago land and burbs area meet or crawl

Going to have a gtg meet at my house May 15th or the following Sunday. I'll add more to this shortly. I'll add a video of my room tonight. There's now 8 subs Nearfield plus my 4-18's behind the screen. I have also added a HTPC in the room. The lcr and all of the surrounds are the same as the last meet.

I'm in Chicago this week for some training. I'm hitting up the Jungle Book at the Rosemont 18 by O'Hare in the 3d/dbox theater tonight at 8:15PM. If any of the Chicago area enthusiasts want to meet for the movie, I know it's short notice but that'd be cool. I purchased seat F6 and the theater seems pretty empty at this time. Also in the way of an exploratory self invite --- I've got nothing to do Wednesday and Thursday night - so if any of the local enthusiasts are up for a brief demo session and live close to O'Hare airport --- I'd love to invite myself over for a demo session or movie session with another avid audio enthusiast. (distance dependent as I'll need to use public transit to go anywhere since I didn't pick up a rental car this trip (my training is right by the airport as is my hotel)) I sent a PM to @eng-399 , and also posted in @rms8 's thread. If any of you are ever in the KC area - I'm happy to return the favor with a demo in my home theater space. If nothing works out this trip on short notice - no big deal - just figured I'd at least speak up.

I'm so bummed out about this I wish I worked better hours so you could swing by. 2nd shift at work is not a fun shift to work but since I'm 3 years new at work I'm stuck with this shift. I move to the midnight shift later in the year. Hopefully rms8 will be home during your visit to Chicago. If your ever around and have mornings free you have my cell number and always welcome over. I always wanted to see what 18's would feel like nearfield and to hear your Mackies to. One day hopefully I'll be able to make it out to your house.

As for this GTG meet its full with 27 guys coming over....its a active thread in the diy speaker sub area thread now.

Mike, and Mike!

Thanks for the home theater tour and chance to talk shop. It's cool that you were able and willing to open your home to another audio enthusiast!
I wish I didn't have to clear out so early, but I enjoyed the time together and the chance to meet you both! Your setup is very nice @murphy2112 . Well done!

If either of you are ever in the KC area - I'd love to return the favor!

Jonathan, I'm glad we could make this work with the luck of my wife working late so we could express a bit of freedom with the volume controls.

It was good to meet you and talk shop. I always learn something, and it was a plus have the time to adjust those new Triton Ones.

It looks like I am late to the party, sorry to see you are full.

Connecting with local enthusiasts is a great idea, we should all keep this thread active and try to get together on occasion. It would be fantastic to talk over ideas and see what others have implemented. My (non-dedicated) home theater is a long term work in progress, but still gets use!

I am in the St. Charles area. Is anybody nearby?

St. Charles is only 25 miles from me. I'm in the Oak Park/River Forest, IL area.

My kids go down around 8pm, and for some strange reason, they cannot hear any loud music I play in the basement, even at very high levels. The only exception is bass below 25Hz - it shakes and vibrates every single door in the house at the same time. So doing an 8-10pm session pretty much any weeknight is not out of the question.

Wife is pretty cool about it until she's ready to go to bed, so I try to schedule any events on the same days as her girls dinners...

Mike,
What was the name of that software application you recommended to play back Atmos content?

^^ MPC-HC. I previously used VLC player and loved it. I also tried the 30-day eval for JRiver and thought it was top-notch excellent. But MPC-HC seems to work just as well and has an iPhone remote app as well (called Remote For MPC).

Anyone in the Chicago land area want to do a crawl sometime this summer. I'll have my room ready for Atmos next week.

I live in the West Loop, and my HT is a work in progress until I get the room treated and a PJ/screen installed, but I'd be interested in a GTG. I'd also be willing to do a Trinnov demo in my dedicated HT space in our condo for fellow hobbyists - weekends are best, but I have some flexibility at night during the summer. I'm out of town on vacation in mid-August but otherwise am available for a local meet.

Not sure we could get more than a half dozen guys at a time in my 19x14 room, but I suppose we could rotate who gets to listen...

Sweet. How many channels are you running? The West Loop is 9 miles from me

I'm running 9.2.4 right now on my 24 channel Altitude. That's all PSB except for my HSU ULS-15 subs.

Otherwise, I have:
Image T2 fronts
Imagine C center (which will probably be replaced with another T2 when I do a motorized AT screen)
Imagine T wides and side surrounds
Imagine S rear surrounds (I must use one side of drivers, not the dipole or simulated dual surrounds)

For Atmos and DTS:X heights, I use four PSB Imagine XAs as front and rear tops. Although they're Dolby enabled modules rather than best practice ceilings, with an almost 9' flat ceiling they do a decent job of providing overhead immersion, in the overhead 'cone of sound' sense.

IMO they do best with Atmos rather than upmixers when it comes to precision, and tend to elevate the stage rather than put objects over MLP with DSU or Neural:X. Still, it's a convenient solution for the moment. I may add another pair of subs, heights, and/or additional side surrounds over time, since I have the channels, but I could be happy with what we have (as if you can ever say that in our hobby).

That's interesting. Not a lot of people have more than 11 channels - none that I know anyway. I use speakers in the ceiling for my Atmos/DTS:X 7.2.4 setup, so it would be interesting to compare. And to hear those PSB speakers. I know I was looking hard at them before I went Goldenear. I think they are in a similar price and class.

I also looked hard at HSU subs and would have gone that route if not for trying DIY.

Hi Tom probably not because I won't have everything done in time in my room. I'm hoping for sometime in april to have the gtg. I hurt my knee to so that's slowed me down quite a bit. I have to build 8 subs boxes and three boxes for my LCR. Lots to do.
