Add @Randy Bessinger , @stitch , and @d_c from KC. We'll be riding up together. Perhaps more will be interested too.

I added some pictures of the theaters that will be demoed in the second post.

Hmm 5-8 Club for a Juicy Lucy for food? And yes I'm aware of the Juicy Lucy wars. We just enjoy the 5-8 Club :) Might be a bit small for the amount of people though.

@zorax2 do you run a Linker on your RS520 to enable the DI for HDR? Your setup is very similar to mine. I have all B&W, but have found KEF to be sonically similar (at least the ones I've heard).

My projector is actually the JVC X790 (twin of the RS540) which is the generation after the RS520. @lukeamdman : Can you edit the first post to X790 / RS540 rather than the RS520? It's amazing you can keep everything straight with everyone's gear.

With the X790 / RS540, I don't need to use a linker. Everything for HDR and WCG works fine right out of the box. I've uploaded Jav's ARVE curves for even better HDR performance. We actually spend more time gaming and watching TV on the projector than movies. I'm hoping some of the attendees bring along 4K HDR BluRays or have scene recommendations. I've got 4K discs and am delighted watching them but I wouldn't be able to pick out a particular scene for demo purposes.

What was now a long time ago, I demoed both the B&Ws and KEFs and liked them both. As you mentioned, they are very close sonically. I gravitated toward the Kefs and then the decision was made much easier when Audio King was going out of business and I was able to get great pricing on the Kefs and other AV gear. At that time, in addition to the Kefs, I purchased a 65" DLP TV, a Samsung SIR-T165 OTA HD Tuner, Mitsubishi and some other brand HDTV video cassette recorders, a Pioneer VSX-49TXi AVR and matching DVD player, etc. Back in the day, that was quite a nice setup!

@lukeamdman Thanks for setting up a new thread for this year's crawl!

For those interested in home automation, I've got Insteon lighting controlled by an ISY 994i. The lighting can be controlled by both IR from my remotes or with voice commands via Amazon Echo. I also have it tied into my security system which is nice for having lights turn on automatically when the doors open, lights turning on or flashing if there is a fire or burglar alarm, etc.

Heh I thought you had the 540 because I commented on it earlier in the other thread, but then saw the list and thought Bourbon had claimed another brain cell. Yes you wouldn't need it with the 540. Speakers can last a long time and until components in the crossovers die they're solid. When I upgraded to the B&W's about 4-5 years ago the Klipsch's (from Audio King) were about 17-18 years old.

I had DesertDome calibrate my 520 and I think he used the curve tool to setup HDR. These do a pretty fabulous job with 4K. My two top films so far in 4K for picture are Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049. Of the two BR 2049 is the winner for demo material. For whatever reason Nolan refuses to go past 5.1 so the Atmos track on 2049 is better IMO. Picture wise Dunkirk may have a smidge more fine detail. But since you have Atmos BR 2049 is a clear winner to me (I have a 7.1.2 setup).

I would like to extend an invite to all crawl attendees to stop by and check out my theater in Mason City, Iowa on Sunday. Those of you travelling from Kansas City, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids will be driving right through my area.

I will likely be driving back home to Mason City Saturday evening when things wind down as I am probably bringing a friend along whom is considering building a home theater.

My theater isn't 100% complete but whose is? I have some trim work in my lobby to finish and I need to dress up the door, etc.

Any of you who are travelling a great distance are welcome to stay at my place. I have two bedrooms which I could put you up in and have plenty of space to put a few blow up mattresses if you bring one along. I am about 2 hours south of Minneapolis so a pretty easy Saturday morning jaunt from here.

Killer 02-12-2018 09:13 PM

If the date holds for me, I may be interested in not only attending, but offering up a stop. I'm in Chaska as well, and may have some access to a variety of projectors that may be different that whats at the stops.

Current system is
JVC 770 (not what I'm referring to in above comment)
Panamorph Palladin Lens
Lumagen Radiance Pro
Oppo 203
Stewart Gemini screen (Phantom HALR 16:9/StudioTek130 2:40)
Marantz7011 (swapping to 8012)
Triad Bronze

Adding KScape Strato and access to other projectors.

Wow - nice and close - that would be awesome! I hope the date will work for you.

Killer 02-13-2018 02:25 PM

To add to this, is anyone interested in getting a THX instructor and professional calibrator to come out and calibrate their system?

This notion is still in the early stages, but I have 3 people lined up, and looking for another 5-7. I need to confirm the rate card and timing too.

Thanks for the invite. I'll definitely take you up on the offer. Are those DTS10s?

Say a guy some of you know from Chicagoland wants to drive to this event, and on the way home wants to enjoy some of the backroads. Thinking alongside the Mighty Mississippi and what not. Any suggestions from the locals?

Great thinking - that should be a beautiful drive as the ice should be off the river and the trees starting to green up.

If the last stop is in Burnsville, go to Hastings, MN then follow the roads along the Minnesota side of the Mississippi river to Red Wing, Lake City, Winona to La Crosse, WI. All of these towns are worth a quick look around with neat historic spots, restaurants, etc.

From La Crosse, either get back to 90/94 or, given enough time - get on State Hwy 35 on the Wisconsin side and then follow it to Dubuque or further to Clinton.

Our family has taken these routes and really enjoyed them. Plan for extra time not only for the route but for stops along the way. You'll be glad you allowed some extra time as it really is a beautiful drive.

I am a HOG member and get an updated atlas every year. The highlighted routes are what you are looking for. It is worth scheduling a trip to the river in the fall when the colors are changing! Hope this helps you.

jessewendt 03-17-2018 02:03 PM

Wish I could join, but I will be out of town. Keep me in the loop for the next one. I would love to host, as well.

Shameless plug...I have a large amount of sonic XP left from my build. If anyone wants it really cheap I need it out of my garage.

It does! Also found this link, part of a whole country-wide listing of great roads. While it isn't Deals Gap, TN "Tail of the Dragon" US-129, there's still plenty of roads I can get in trouble... I mean enjoy the scenery on.

Likely gonna pick up @eng-399 from the airport Saturday as I'll be driving up to Eau Claire the night before.

This is gonna creep up on us and be here before we know it!

No kidding. I've got a list of a bunch of little odds and ends that I'd like to get done beforehand and I feel like Will Ferrell in Old School... I don't know! I don't know if I'll have enough time!

I really am looking forward to it, though.
