I'm planning on attending and will likely (hopefully) bring Laura with! I'm also hoping to bring another couple from Milwaukee and introduce them to Jeff's amazing products!

Anyone have black velvet they can bring along tomorrow? A few yards just to cover the top of the subs under the screen?

I can bring the scraps we're currently using to cover our 1400s. They may be big enough to cover most, if not all of the subs.

Wow, another terrific GTG for the Wisconsin group! And a huge turnout; I'd guess that there had to be 50 people there over the course of the day and night!

I don't know what can be said about Jeff's speakers and subs that hasn't already been said many, many times. Mains that most people could run without subs, and still be perfectly happy, and subs that are actually able to add to that and bring everything up to a whole extra level. And all of it done without effort. His warehouse space is huge, easily 10x the largest home theater in the area, but there was no fatigue in running the demo pieces louder than anyone would normally listen to.

Of course the drawback to this, is that it really points out any deficiencies in one's current system. But that's really the curse of our lot, isn't it?

And, as great as the demo portion of these GTGs are, I'm going to have to say that I'm really enjoying the company of our group. It was great to catch up with you guys, and see what's happening in each of your builds, and worlds. It was also nice to see some new faces, and hopefully we'll see more of you make it to future events.

Big thanks to @Jeff Permanian for setting this all up, and supplying some absolutely delicious pizzas, loved those deep-dishes! And to @desertdome for calibrating and running all the demo pieces. And thanks for the HDMI cable.

And we have to recognize @chucky7 , who is now in possession of the longest-traveled Wisconsin GTG honorary (virtual) trophy. It sure looked like he was enjoying himself at the GTG, and was really into all of the demos. Good thing he made it here before it gets cold.

Hope to see you guys at the next one,

Scott

Completely agree! We had a fantastic time at the GTG and it's always great catching up with everyone. It was awesome to meet some new people and put faces to others from AVS.

Thanks @Jeff Permanian for hosting and supplying pizza, @desertdome , @SOWK and everyone else that setup the GTG. It was truly an incredible setup!

Towards the end of the GTG we listened to some music and I was very impressed with how it sounded even in a "warehouse situation". I really enjoy my RS1 subs, and the FOUR RS2 subs didn't disappoint. It was cool to hear the difference between with subs and just 2.0 full range. The 212RT is such an incredible speaker. I'm a big Gregory Porter fan and his music sounded perfect on the 212RT, just so clean and smooth. Some of the movie demos were played above reference and it wasn't even close to straining them, the dynamics seem endless. It's crazy to think that one speaker is capable of doing so much.

PS: Thanks everyone that brought snacks and beverages! Scott and Nicki, our daughter was just as amped for the gourmet popcorn as I was.

You can keep the room intact and just keep upgrading gear -- like projectors.
Are you going to CES by any chance? Coming up quickly.

I tend to only go to Axpona and CEDIA.

Not really all that interested in small electronics and appliances.

Mostly just Home Theater and High End Audio.

When I make changes I tend to do a decent amount all at once.

Example this last modification:

Added Two More Subs in the back of the Theater behind the chairs on the Riser
Had to create a new routing channel for the needed XLR run from the Processor to the Sub's input
Had to move the projector Rack forward
Moved the back chairs forward
Had new stands built for the surrounds and rears to lower to Atmos approved height
Wrapped new stands with Black Velvet and installed 50 lbs of sand in each
Wrapped my front crown molding in black velvet
Designed a bracket system for my front baffle wall to prevent it from sagging over time
Had to lower and modify the speaker cables coming out for the walls to the new speaker heights
Installed the RMC-1
Etc.... Etc...

Will finish when i get home.

I guess that will be determined by Emotiva and their release of the expansion modules. I doubt they are 9.5 weeks away.

So just a warning and an apology. Don't install more dsp subwoofer filters than necessary. I had a 20hz issue that sounded like ported air chuffing when I wasn't really pushing my subs. I figured it was a loose brace. Tonight I opened the sub that sounded the worst to find the loose brace but found nothing. I reduced my six filters down to two, a peak +8db at 10hz and a low shelf -10db 36hz. The difference is astounding compared to when I had my ht meeting (aka the apology). Also as a repercussion, I've lost a picture frame in the bathroom... 🤣

Lesson learned

Hello everyone,

It looks like I have the responsibility of kicking off the 2020 GTG's, so I hope you can make it down.

Saturday, January 18, 2020
1400 (aka 2 PM) start
CineMark theater; this was coined by a friend in 2001; I had no idea about the existence of the theater chain.
Homer Glen, IL 60491

The room is 27' long x 21' wide with two rows of seating. I have seven seats in there, but can add portable chairs or we can cycle through for demos to maintain the soundfield accuracy. I am flexible. For acoustic treatments, I have DIY absorptive panels in the room and superchunk bass traps behind the screen wall. While I don't have the largest screen or the most impressive room theme, hopefully you find something in the details below that will make the trip worthwhile.

I will provide drinks, snacks, and pizza.

The system consists of:

Audio / Video Processor
Marantz AV8805 AVP
miniDSP 2x4 HD

Amplifers
Classe' CAV-180 180 W x 5
Crestron CNAMPX-16X60 120 W x 4, 60 W x 4

Primary Video Source Device
OPPO UDP-203 playing files from a QNAP NAS; if you want to bring a disc to spin, that is fine, but I might have it already. If you want to make sure I have your favorite content, just ask. The OPPO is super fast to access either chapters or specific time stamps, so if you have that information, that also helps.

Video Processor
Lumagen Radiance Pro 4446-18G

Projector
JVC RS540

Screen
Stewart Filmscreen 110" 1.78:1 Non-perforated with StudioTek 130 screen material.

Speakers
Seven (7) JTR Triple 12HT-LP from 2011 in the L, C, R, Wides, Surround Backs.

Two (2) JTR Noesis 212HT from 2015 in the surround position (I can explain)

Four (4) JTR Slanted 8HT from 2011 in the Top Front and Top Rear Atmos speaker positions.

Two (2) JTR 4000ULF-ST earthquake machines.

Four (4) Seaton SubMersive Subwoofers.

And last but not least, a Baffle Open Sub Shaker (BOSS) platform consisting of six (6) JBL GX1200 drivers for three front chairs. A BOSS Platform allows for drivers to be mounted near-field to the listener, but not mounted in a sealed or ported enclosure. I haven't built it yet, but I have all the materials and equipment ready. Here is my design for the platform:

Last but not least, here are some photos of my modest DIY theater.

I'll be there, and my brother is also interested. As a fellow Chicagolander I look forward to the easy drive. Also looking forward to pulling in more ideas and inspiration for my own pending buildout.
