I was just taking a closer look at Travis's pics above. Some pretty good records out in the open, Stevie Wonder, Beatles, and I think that's Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti looking at me from one of cubbies, nice!

Played around some more with the table setup recently. If you can't tell, it's Winter and I'm in my basement all the time! After getting my tonearm where I like it per a recent post, I started playing around with the loading in my phono preamp. This is something I've shied away from in the past as I'd just use the cartridge manufacturer's recommended settings, which for the Hana SL is 400 ohms.

I decided to lower the loading to 250 and give a listen. This collapsed the width of the sound stage and sounded too boxed in so that's not cool, up to 350 it went. This brought back the width but the top end of certain voices/instruments had a slight edge to them (that's why I started playing with the loading in the first place). Now down to 325, and finally 300 is where I settled. 300 in my setup brought a focus that I hadn't previously heard before, without destroying the sound stage width. There are numerous subtle differences I could list with instrument detail but the biggest change is that voices are clearer and it's now easier to discern lyrics. Springsteen's - Rosalita is my favorite song by him and now I can make out most of the lyrics while it plays, loudly...I think it's great that I could get more enjoyment from such a simple tweak! That recording is definitely not hi-fi either.

So what have I learned from all this recently with the tonearm tweak and cartridge loading? Take the manufacturer's settings as a starting point/baseline and go from there. Every system interacts differently with the components/room so what's "right" in one space my not be optimal in another.

Now on to cables.

So I hit up Vinyl Cup while my wife was helping interview new candidates for the Iowa Food Coop general manager job.

Ended up spending about 2 hours looking through records, chatting about cats, listening to records, chatting about cats and drinking free beer.
Picked up 6 new (to me) rekkits...
AC/DC: For Those About to Rock
Toto: IV
E.G. Daily: Lace Around the World (Terrible but in a typical 80s awesome way) She is better known for her acting and voice work. Such as Dottie in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Buttercup from The Powerpuff Girls, Babe in the second Babe movie...
Boz Skaggs: Boz Skaggs
ELO: Eldorado
Earth, Wind & Fire: Gratitude

I also picked up a NOS Rotel RC-1570 pre-amp.
I really enjoy the Jolida passive but felt like something was just missing from it so I am dipping my toes back into the active solid state pre pool to see if that is it or if it is something else.
There is the added benefit of it having Bluetooth for casual listening and a pretty darned nice phono pre. Not sure it will beat out the 651P but going to A/B them and see.

Nice pickups, I’m a huge fan of Toto IV! As for the Rotel, definitely share your thoughts once you get comfortable with it.

Sorry, she’s best known for Valley Girl. And Better Off Dead.

Okay, she’s Dottie, but but Valley Gurl is a close second. And she actually sings in Better Off Dead.

I had no idea who this was until you mentioned Better Off Dead, it was the high school dance scene where Ricky was feeling it! Fantastic!

Freebies! A friend came by with 25 or so records and another buddy and I divided them up. Out of all these, I don’t know Aldo Nova?

Some recent pickups I paid for, and yes, I actually gave away money for that Force M.D.’s album...it’s worth it just for the cover.

Took a look through your list Travis, it’s fun (to me) seeing what others are into. I see you have a self titled Hall and Oates, I’ve been on the lookout but each time I come across one it’s pretty beat up.

Des Moines area turntable listening session

I stopped at Marv’s quick and found a few prizes in the “Opened Records” section for $8 each.

And I just want to say, the Milty Zerostat is legit. It knocks out static in records, towels, shirts, whatever you’ve got. I’m convinced.

They now have an opened records section huh? I wonder if there are more changes in store?

It was literally about 20 records, all former in-store played, not really “used”.

Recently gave ELO - Out of the Blue a spin. First 5 tracks really come out swinging. The middle is just OK, but once you hit "Standing in the Rain" the album finishes nicely.

Also gave the Queen Classics CD a spin. I suspect that some of the tracks have been tinkered with. Bohemian Rhapsody seems to have the bass beefed up, the vocals pushed back, and some of the guitar notes seem to distort. I don't think it's my setup as other tracks sound very good (and hit the same guitar range without distortion). Guessing some just have the dreaded compressor sicked on them to sound "better". I may have to track down a good CD of "A Night at the Opera".

But, yeah give Out of the Blue a spin if you have it. Mr. Lynn is the master of phasing effects and getting a really fat/wide sound.

Glad to hear you've been listening. If you're into Queen at all, try and get Sheer Heart Attack. It's my favorite of theirs and I feel it's the best album to show off all of their various styles, be it hard rock, ballads, swing/big band, or pop. They can play anything!

Here are some AXPONA pics, more to come. The silver beauties in the first pic are KEF’s. They are 1 continuous piece of stainless steel, stunning!

The big black table is the Clearaudio Statement V1

The TT that hovers is called Mag-Lev, pretty interesting conversation piece.

The big black speakers with the wood backdrop are Magico M6’s and they filled a huge space with absolute ease.

The red speakers are Von Schweikert ($200k/pair & 465lbs each) and they were my favorites at the show, the 2nd red pic is from behind on those same speakers (it has tweeters firing in front and back). The TT in this setup is the Techdas Air Force III. They had a Peter Gabriel “So” LP off to the side and I asked to play Don’t Give Up...it was phenomenal!
