Ivan, thanks for hosting! I had a really great time and it was great talking with everyone.

In particular I enjoyed watching Sanjay's Dolby Atmos demo disc. When Sanjay said to close our eyes during the forrest clip, I would have sworn that we were really out in the field at night. The immersive sound field in Ivan's theater was so realistic that I would swear he already had installed Atmos speakers.

Looking forward to joining you guys to watch Arrival at the AMC Norwalk 20 Dolby Prime Theater on the 2nd weekend of November.
I'm assuming we'll do a Sunday morning breakfast and early showing like usual on November 13th ?

Interesting you should say that. I will admit that I looked around for the Atmos speakers.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to LA, and I wanted to say hello to fellow audio enthusiasts here.

I unfortunately wasn't here during LAAVA. I'd still love to meet some fellow audiophiles here. Here's what I'm thinking.

So I spent a ton of my spare time making a really good sounding mini speaker because there were no great sounding small speakers I can buy. However, I got really into it because it was amazing to see just how good a small speaker can sound when serious efforts are put into achieving as many proper speaker design principles and good speaker performance criteria.

My speaker is 5" x 13" x 5'' (WHD), and it is a 3 way design using very high quality drivers from Scan-Speak. It has a properly designed time aligned, linear phase tri-amped active crossover. The speaker is very small, but it'll play so deep Adele can roll in it . In all seriousness it has real bass extension to 45Hz, outdoors!

I'm wondering, would anyone be interested in listening to these speakers and tell me what they think? I have too much sweets in my life so please no sugarcoating . Plus, every criticism helps improve the next speaker. I'm in Mid City Los Angeles, and I'd welcome anyone interested to have a listening session in my home, or I can bring this speaker to your home.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Welcome to LA!

What's the power draw/range? How about efficiency?

What's currently powering them?

Do you currently have them set up for 2.1/2.0?

Have you run REW to see the response?

It has been quite a while since there has been 3D in the Dolby Theater space. Think GI Joe II. Although it won't be in HDR or with Dolby Atmos, it should look a lot better than the IMAX 3D projection across the hall. Possibly Dolby Cinema response to the dual laser IMAX projection in the Chinese theater in Hollywood. Almost any movie looks better with dual laser projection even without HDR.

No, it's in Atmos.

I'm wondering about the 4K projectors and HDR. It's still advertised as Dolby Cinema.

Dolby Cinema refers to a place and not necessarily all of its contents are HDR, although all of them should be 4K dual laser projection, unless one of the projectors breaks down, and that has happened. Rogue One will not be the first film to show there and not have HDR. So it is possible to have no HDR as well as no Dolby Atmos at a Dolby Cinema presentation. Whether or not it is worth the premium price is up to the buyer.

Efficiency varies widely depending on the frequency, but generally 90dB above 300Hz and 70-80dB below that.

Here's an anechoic chamber measurement of >200Hz. Notice it is +- 1.1dB without any smoothing. If I used any smoothing it just becomes a flat line.

And a ground plane measurement for <200Hz (similar to what Josh Ricci does) because an anechoic chamber cannot measure bass accurately unless it is extremely large.

I've been a real delinquent, but yes. There's been some interest in a movie at the Norwalk AMC Dolby Cinema. Unfortunately showtimes are not yet posted, so the plan is either breakfast at IHOP up the road then a movie, or a movie followed by lunch at the adjacent Outback.

May I suggest this place. Been there many times and I'm sure it can accommodate a large group and we can stay there for a while since it's a buffet. They open at 11:00am. Across the street from the Norwalk AMC.
