It was great to see all of you at the GTG today for brunch. For those of you that went to Ivan's afterward to check out his new LG OLED TV, let me know how it looked. Definitely thinking of one of those in the future.
Instead I went to Will's afterward to check out his Lowahorn and SubMaximus builds with Scatmos height surrounds and tactile transducers in the seating. We demoed Edge of Tomorrow and some other material, switching between straight DTS 9.1.2 (front heights) and his Scatmos system 9.1.6 (top front height, top center height & top read height) with the front heights turned off. Although the layout of the atoms speakers varied from the regular Dolby diagram (the top center height's were to the side, not in line with the other two height channels) it sounded completely fantastic. He said Sanjay helped him place the speaker locations and it was superb - killer job Sanjay!
The transducers really added realism. We played around with the amplitude levels. I tended to like more subtle vibration that supported the bass without calling attention to itself. Will definitely likes them turned up to roller coaster ride level (that was actually a lot of fun also).
Hearing Will's system today was a lot of help in deciding modifications to my own system. I am amazed at the difference between front heights only versus six surround heights. We listened both to Atmos and DTX material switching back and forth. We also listened to material that was not encoded for Atmos and it sounded amazingly better with the Atmos up mix. Scatmos really created an immersive sound field - my hat's off to Scott for thinking it up until an affordable 6 channel Atmos processor shows up.
I have three pair of Gallo Acoustics Strada speakers left over from previous installation projects that I had originally intended to use for Atmos. My original plan was to surface mount them on the ceiling in addition to the existing Martin Logan Script front heights. My better half would rather use in-ceiling speakers, which I have always thought of as inferior sounding to surface mount speakers. So the installation and exact speaker locations were in flux until I could audition enough in-ceiling speakers to see if I could find a pair I liked, and hear enough other people's Atmos systems to determine the optimum speaker locations for my room.
I have been demo'ing Atmos speakers from some time and reading the Atmos thread here on AVS. Some of you saw the Origin Acoustics D108's and Monitor Audio CT380IDC's I brought to the last GTG at Ivan's. I just picked up a pair of KEF ci200RR-THX's and Martin Logan EM-R's for audition this last week. At some point I'd like to have a GTG to have a shoot off and do a review for AVS.
Anyway, thanks Will for all the time you gave me today to hear your system. I had a great time. Maybe someone can post info for the GTG for Star Wars Rogue One
next weekend at the Dolby Theater in Norwalk before the seating sells out.
