Hey All,
I've always had a large center channel speaker Polk CS400 then CS1000P (and loved it).
Now I am looking for something to mount under the TV on a Mantle Mount 700.
My other option is in ceiling but I'd like to keep floor speakers (Polk Rt5000) and add atmos speakers in the ceiling.
Thanks in advance,
JEff

Should I Benq 4k for a few months??

Hi all,

I have not been on for a long time, maybe since the meeting at Mike's - thanks again Mike - fabulous theater and home!

I am lost in care-giving so little time and most likely will be selling my house in about 3-4 months. BUT, I am hell bent on getting even the most basic theater propped up before I go. So, does anyone know of any particular negatives or better recommendation than the Benq HT2550 or TK800 (seem to be the same innerds).

They are cheap - and 4k... My setup will be a short (13'-14' maybe 15 if I push it) to the lens tip, I think that gets about 120", and I have a white-ish wall, or the screen Mike gave me - a perf. Sure not perfect but for a month or so, I'll live. I'm just wondering if there is a known better or down side.

I might as well go here: In 3-4 months, I will have a wonderful barely used Benq HT2550 for sale, get in line if interested. LOL.

Anyway, hope everyone has a great new year and if I don't move too far away, I hope to see you all at the next meet up.

Oh, And any recommendations for a basic - very basic (read dirt cheap) 5 channel speaker system. I have sub and no room or time for more than a 5 dot system. Unless hell freezes over and I find a way to keep my house. Thnx

Steve,

Sorry about your situation. If you just need a basic system temporarily, I can let you borrow my Infinity Primus P363 tower speakers if you have the room for 4 towers. They are just the surrounds for my setup, so I can do without them for a few months. I don't have a center I can spare though. If you have the room for another tower or maybe a P163 bookshelf I might be able to swing that and listen in mono in my office since I just use them for background music while I work or the occasional YouTube video. Let me know and we can try to work out a way to get them to you.

Thanks, I appreciate the offer - but I can't fit them in.

I need little hang on the wall style. The room - at this time anyway - is used for guests with a fold up futon/little dresser AND caregiver resting on a couch. I barely have room for the Sub. At LEAST no kids living there - that went on for years after I prepped it for a theater. Worst case is probably I will find used Def Tech theater, 600 or similar. I think I have a center and a single main from a pair that one failed and I upgraded. Acoustics are going to be blankets stapled.....

Hi Steve, if you want to go dirt cheap, Dayton Audio B652-AIR and B452-AIR are supposed to be pretty good for their rock-bottom price. If you want something nicer, maybe the Emotiva Airmotiv series would be a good fit. Hang in there with the care giving, and I hope you can care for yourself too. Having been there myself, I know it is easy to neglect one's own needs in that situation.

We have a pair of b652's hooked up to small tube amplifier from Monoprice, in our dinning room for background music. Guest consistently comment on how nice the music sounds, and I think that's pretty impressive for speakers that are under a $100/pair.

Thanks, I will take a look. But own need's, what's that??? A doc said: we knew but could not prove stress kills; until we studied a group of caregivers. His hint was wine doesn't help. Buzz kill.

Edit: I took a look. Wow, AMT tweeter....$40 each - amazing.

February GTG

Proposing a February GTG to see Alita: The Battle Angel; I'll suggest Sunday afternoon, February 17th. Worth seeing in either IMAX 3D or Dolby Cinema 3D. I lean toward AMC Burbank, but I'm down for Century City or even South Bay or OC. Who's game?

I'm your huckleberry. IMAX @ AMC Burbank would be great, since they recently switched to laser projector + 12-channel immersive audio (no need to suffer the old seats and echo-y room at the TCL Chinese).

Count me in. Saved the date.

Dan, is there confirmation of a Dolby Cinema 3D? I haven't seen evidence of any titles displayed in DC3D since Disney's The Jungle Book and a limited special showing of Titanic 3D.

No confirmation, just me being delusionally optimistic because of the James Cameron connection.

Anyway, let's call it - AMC Burbank IMAX Screen, Sunday the 17th. I'd rather eat after the show so that we're not rushed, so let's aim for the first show of the day, 11 or 11:30, followed by lunch at Gourmet 88.

BTW - We're going to AMC Burbank 16 Dolby Theater this Saturday Feb 2nd at 4:45pm to see "They Shall Not Grow Old"

I saw the preview showing last year and was blown away. Just an amazing piece of cinematography and sound. Peter Jackson does a brief introduction and a longer post-commentary after the credits which is well worth the wait. (The risqué soldier's drinking song during the credits is pretty fun).

Coming back this weekend for a second viewing with friends. I highly recommend this film !

Unsure of the on-sale date, but will keep an eye on the AMC site. We're leaning towards IMAX for Alita, for two reasons: 3D, and also Cameron framed a chunk of the movie in the 1.9 aspect ratio, which will be letterboxed off everywhere else. The new laser projector in the Burbank IMAX is pretty stunning, not Dolby Cinema levels of black, but a stupidly high contrast ratio.

I can't wait to see this! Alas I am not free Saturday evening, but will definitely be catching this on the big screen.
