I understand that the answer will be subjective, but does acting seem phony to you when you see a play (live theatre)?

I don't know about Oklahoma on the big screen at the Todd AO 30fps, but since Soap Opera Effect is a known quantity arguably even 30fps is pushing things (although perhaps can be mitigated with lighting techniques or shutter angles).
What perceived* changes do you think happen to the lighting that need to be compensated for when switching from 24fps to 30fps? *(assuming that the lighting hasn't physically changed)

I'm not a fan of high frame rate, but that Vulture article endows it with almost magical properties.

I feel that like most things in life HFR takes some getting used too. After a few minutes of Billy Lynn and Gemini Man I was all in. Love the realism, smoothness and the lack of jitters on panning scenes.

Absolutely loved Aquarela 4k Atmos @96fps ..in Santa Barbara..the movie not so much tho...lol

No (well, assuming the actors are good).

I'm not actually sure - a good area for research! My observation, though, is that within the realm of 30fps content, some (such as soap operas) look most obviously like, well, soap operas, and others (reality TV, some documentaries) manage to get closer to a film look even at 30fps. Some content I'm actually not sure what their acquisition frame rate even is - Saturday Night Live or the usual late-night talk shows (The Tonight Show, Steven Colbert etc). Does anyone know if those are 24 or 30? Most scripted TV these days is 24fps.

Then maybe it's more expectation bias than any actual change in the acting. There is no 24fps cadence with a live performance; it's as smooth as HFR. But we expect that. However, when watching movies, we expect the 24fps cadence. When it's not there, something feels wrong. Even naming it the "soap opera" effect is creating an expectation bias that the acting will be at a lesser level than movies. Lesser, not just different.

The negative reaction to HFR seems to be visceral and reflexive. Not like some of us woke up one day and made a conscious decision to not like HFR. Two cameras right next to each other, capturing the same acting performance, with one running at 24 and the other at 60. Why would one look believable and the other look "phony"? Maybe you're right: good area for research.

If the camera was locked to a fixed position for 2 hours, then the HFR movie would look as real as the live stage play. The problem is that never happens. Cameras move while the scene rolls. A lot.

I love both theaters, and this is a tough call for Star Wars in particular, because of the history of Star Wars movies showing at the Chinese. That said, the big differences are these:

1) The Chinese is a new-IMAX-style 1.90:1 screen. It is quite large and very satisfying, but the AMC Universal is an old-fashioned IMAX with a truly gargantuan IMAX screen (several stories tall) with the over-square 1.43:1 aspect ratio. Now Star Wars will be Scope, so letterboxed in both venues, but the image will be much larger at Universal.

2) Both venues have IMAX 12 channel sound. Acoustics have *always* been challenging at the Chinese, and it will sound better at Universal. But, IMAX has done a good job at the Chinese and I think it sounds pretty good.

3) I've gotta say there is something pretty special about seeing Star Wars openings at the Chinese though, as that's been a prominent opening location going all the way back to the original in '77.

if you can still find any

intimate theater . .
10 years ago or so

in Santa Ana, an intimate group, The Rude Gorilla, director Dave Barton ( may still be in O.C.)
maybe seating 30-35

actors 5-10 feet away from you, minimalist settings, no microphones needed
lots of Ravenscroft (iirc) plays and others,

an unsustainable endeavor but they had a heck of a good run maybe 4-7 years,
the actors?
students, some with pro experience,

and right" in your face"
priceless theater

Actually I got tickets for both since the IMAX is also 3D - both at the Burbank 16.

But my "premiere" presentation will be Dolby Cinema for the picture & Atmos sound.

Thanx. No right or wrong answer. Was just trying to find out whether a cadence higher than 24Hz hurts the sense of reality.

L.A and O.C folks, I no longer need this DTS sign. If someone here wants it for free, just give me a call at 657 549 2410, and we'll arrange a time for pick up.

I've enjoyed having the sign in my theater room for years, but lately, I'm changing the room around and I'm wanting it to look less "commercial".

It may be thought that the occasional lower range of activity for the group has settled in

"winter", life in general and all that,
compromise being a core value

but

not settling without serious regard is also at the core of what the collective "power base" of LAHTG is

WE all have many things to be thankful for

everyday

Happy Thanksgiving to all of the group
