I think the IMAX rooms at Universal Citywalk and Irvine Spectrum are overall the best in sound and projector quality. The Irvine IMAX was my all time favorite, and recently went through renovations (comfier seats, laser projector). I am sad to say that they may have ditched their old projector that could do 70MM. This was confirmed with the Tenet prologue that screened prior to Star Wars Rise of Skywalker. It still looked and sounded amazing, but it was not at 70MM, which I understand was presented in some IMAX screens, utilizing a dual projector setup.
I think that leaves the Citywalk AMC as the only one in the greater LA/OC area, with the dual projector setup, and will be my go to choice from now on. It becomes even more of a no-brainer if you're an A-list AMC member.

Heads up!

It looks like Kris Deering will be doing another calibration tour through our area in the latter half of January.

I just learned that 1917 does have a Dolby Vision grade, and although it's been absent from Dolby Cinema screens due to a certain movie from a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, starting next week 1917 will be playing in Dolby Cinema. I plan on catching it then, probably at the AMC Burbank.

There are many AMC with dual Laser which are much better than the 70mm which is soft in comparison. Also the Citywalk AMC is ok but there are plenty of better AMC choices out there.

Do you have any recommendations for the LA/OC area?

Yes, I actually went to one of the first screenings after its renovation, for the first showing of Joker. It was a very impressive experience, but much credit goes to the super sharp and gorgeous photography of that movie. The sound was much improved as well. I think the contrast fell just short of the Dolby room just across the hall. I happened to catch 1917 in the Dolby room last night. Exquisite use of atmos and surround, and I forget how much the buttkickers add to the overall experience.

But now I have no other option but the AMC Universal to catch a true 70MM screening of Tenet, and all future Nolan movies. I'm still a bigger fan of the Imax audio presentation though. Bass is tighter and hits harder. Plus the soundstage is extremely wide. The 1st screening of the renovated Imax in Irvine was for the latest Star Wars, and it was exceptional.
