Ah, I was thinking that the house hadn't been built yet and there was potentially some furnace placement flexibility - my bad. Still, your initial layout looks solid enough to me that your final plan should very likely be a quality use of space. What are you using for your 3d model? I've used Google Sketchup quite a bit in the past but I don't know what's best/easiest to use currently. For quick 2d stuff, good old graph paper and even napkins work great. Fun times coming...good luck.

@slarity Not understanding where walls are from the mock-ups, will you need to go through the theater to get to the bedroom and bathroom?

Or can a walkway be constructed to turn left at the bottom of the stairs and go down some hallways to the bathroom and bedroom and right into the theater? Just not sure if the area under things like the patio are usage space or if its even footage in the basement.

Nope not new, built in 2008. I use Blender, but I dabble in creating video games so I've gotten use to it. Just ran out of time during the weekend.

Yes you would have to walk through the theater to get to the bedroom. That's why I said it wasn't ideal with the placement of the egress window. I'll obviously have a better idea of possibilities after I move, just wanted to throw this up and see if anyone had any thoughts.

//edit Here, perhaps 3d views would make it easier to understand. I am actually 3d modeling this out and putting it into a game engine so I can run around in real time and check it out. I'm going to make textures, lights, and equipment (like screen, rack, etc) but this is what its like right now. Scale might be slightly off but similar. Note: Clicking an image should take you to the fullsize image.

Of course! I doubt I'll ever make it to that point but I guess if I got bored enough I could. I still have a ton of models to create and texturing...ugh, out of the whole video game creation pipeline UV unwrapping and texturing are my least favorite. I'm just not very good at that part. The 3d modeling goes pretty well, that furnace only took about 15 minutes to complete. I still have to do interior walls, bathroom, screen, equipment, bar, seating, projector, etc.

@slarity you are welcome to swing by my place and take a look around. I am part of the way through construction but it might help you get a plan of attack for your project.

That is a very good idea. I haven't had to build a room from scratch yet. I'm going to focus on getting the house first, still have inspection of our house today, inspection of new house on Tuesday, appraisals, financing, etc etc etc. Selling a house and buying a new one is incredibly stressful.

I believe dlbeck has decided to go with The Basslet: "The world’s first watch-size subwoofer for your body. Experience powerful bass – anywhere you go." I just hope he doesn't try to wear it somewhere where it will give the bass more "balls".

I just got my avs account back. Unfortunately I hadn't updated the email in a looong time and the email it was tied to was no longer available. Quick email to AVS and they sorted me out. I swear I'm not an imposter!

I was going to upgrade to the 2017 S2's (little more output), but DesertDome talked me into the basslets. Plan on getting 7 of them. One for each seat.

Then....everyone knows how much better two subs are better than one, I'll buy 7 more so each person can have two subs.

How awesome is that

Anyone have a contact in Des Moines area that can custom make doors? I would make it myself but the table saw I am borrowing is not up to that kind of project to get nice straight cuts. So probably going to contract it out as the door is not going to be a standard size either.

I think Menards can do custom door sizes. Maybe they are only "custom" within a certain range of sizes, though.

I have a buddy who owns a construction company focusing on interior remodeling and custom cabinetry.
Give them a call, Gregson Construction (Bob) 515-202-4111 and tell him Ryan sent you his way.
You may need to leave a message this weekend though since he has at least 3 or 4 cars out at GoodGuys this weekend.

Thanks, I'll give him a call once I get my risers built so I know exactly what size the door is going to be.

For those of you that have a commute and listen to podcasts (I know...so 2005) I found a fairly decent one that I wasn't expecting....the Listening Room from Kef. They push Kef a little too much (imagine that) but for the first episode I listened to on constructing a home theater it had good info....granted pretty basic but still good info.

So my go to podcasts:

The HT Guys
Home Theater Geeks
AV Rant

...and now the Listening Room.

Helps those miles pass by...

Howdy folks.

I am developing an assisted living facility in Marshalltown and I have a dedicated 15 seat theater in the plans. The room, equipment, and acoustic panels, etc. were all laid out by Acoustic Frontiers... Nyal can thank dlbeck for the reference as I was there for The Savoy's open house and the Powerpoint from Nyal made an impression on me.

Anyhow, MEP is spec'ing the rough in for speakers, projectors, etc. according to the design of the room but the actual installation and setup of the theater is all "owner-supplied" and outside the general construction contract. I am looking for a reputable company in the central Iowa area to contact for proposals.

As much as I would like to DIY this, I will have too many other things to be bothered with at that stage. Any suggestions for a good HT outfit I should reach out to?

Thanks.

Baniels - sounds like a sweet project. Glad you went with Nyal...he did a great job! Can you post what Nyal spec'd out for the facility?

As far as someone to finish the theater that's a tough one and I don't have any good suggestions...at least with someone who I'm familiar with. I'm sure someone on this forum does.

Also, I work in Marshalltown so let me know if you need me to stop by for inspections

@dlbeck Here are some snippets from Nyal's design. https://imgur.com/a/1XdYB

He hit the mark I was going for. Not at the highest standards for this forum, but well beyond the room with chairs and a medium sized TV (if that even) that passes for a "theater" in many senior care facilities. It'll get the job done.

Where do you work in Marshalltown? Fisher? I'll definitely connect with you when we get underway. Small shred of hope to break ground this fall, but most likely will be first of Spring.

Hi all! Just wanted to say hi to my Iowa peeps! Back here from Utah for a few days and the weather did a great job of reminding me of one of the reasons I bugged out of here.

Drove by my old house yesterday and had a few little pangs for my old theater, but then reminded myself how much I'll love the new theater I'm planning - whenever I can make it happen.

Happy belated Fourth, guys!

Give Kent a call at Hawkeye Audio in Cedar Falls. TJ does the install work for the shop and I've worked side-by-side with TJ on two install jobs. TJ does a great job and he is who I would hire if I didn't DIY things myself.
