My theory on this...there must be some soundbars out there that sum all the channels and distort with a properly mastered movie, and Disney is mastering with those in mind. There's no other logical reason to do it, because it's not just a volume thing, it does actually affect the available dynamic range, and the impact in a properly calibrated system.

I do love the Incredibles, though. Really fun film.

I love my iPhone, but it will never replace my turntable. I've never seen Titanic OR XXXXXXXXX. Alexa is a stripper name.

That's a good point. Since there's no Atmos track mastered at reference there's no good way to tell how much this is harming things. The mixes on the recently Disney stuff do seem to sound good, but again there's no way to tell if they could be better.

Overall a worthwhile upgrade to the existing Blu Ray. If you love the film it's well worth it.

I haven't personally worked with the Atmos encoder, but the Dolby encoding process I've worked with involved placing your dialog average at or near (IIRC) -21db, and if you strayed from that, the decoders would not work properly. Simply taking a great mix and dropping (or boosting) the overall level out of that range would wreak havoc with playback.

On another subject, I have the Pink Floyd Delicate Sound of Thunder file that I digitized from the LaserDisc. In a few weeks, when I return from vacation, I'm planning on doing somewhat of a remaster --- some color and gamma correction, audio mastering. Anyone have interest in sitting in for that process and offering input?

I’ve got just a hair over 800 hours on my JVC projector and have had it a year now. I know it was sometime early or mid June of 2017 when it arrived.

Is 800-810ish a lot of hours in a year?

Normal? I don't think there is such a measurement to determine normal bulb usage for a projector. I owned my last projector for two years and had ~900 hours on it when we sold our house. A friend of mine had 1400 hours on his Sony projector after 1 year (we purchased at the same time). Sorry for stating the obvious, but hours will vary based on the amount of TV, movies or gaming you do.

A different way to think about it is when you may have to replace a bulb. With an average of 800 hours a year, you will likely need a new bulb every 4-5 years depending on lamp mode.

Well i knew bulb hours depends on the amount of tv i watch. lol I just know that the way some people use their projectors is for mainly movies and they might use a different display for tv viewing. I watch a lot of tv, as well as movies, but more tv id say, especially in the fall but i was actually just curious how my watching habits compared with others as I feel i watch a lot of content lol. If you've ever heard the old saying from people, you watch too much tv. Not that it matters how much video hours i consume per year or anyone else's i was just more or less curious how most people use their projectors and how much content they might consume.

Actually, mentioning that on average if i watch 800 hours of content a year knowing that every 4 years or so ill need a new bulb is useful information! I've got my lamp on low but i wasn't quite sure what to expect for bulb life out of it as ive never owned a projector before, let alone using it as my primary display device for pretty much everything. It does kick to high lamp when i watch HDR content which isn't too often.

A quick google search states "On average, American adults are watching five hours and four minutes of television per day. The bulk of that — about four and a half hours of it — is live television, which is television watched when originally broadcast. Thirty minutes more comes via DVR."

That number blows my mind. During the summer if I don't purposely sit down to watch a movie I bet I don't have 5 hours of screen time in a week. Fall and winter seasons change a bit since I'll watch 1-2 college football games each Saturday and that is a solid 6-7 hours in a day. But that statement should give you a good feeling. You are well under the average. Compared to the rest of America you are not even close to watching to much TV. In fact, I should likely prescribe you to enjoy that JVC projector about 1-2 more hours a day. Maybe start by binge watching all the seasons of Alf.

haha I remember that show, it was many moons ago. My uncle has an alf in the trunk of his 72 charger he puts on display in car shows.

Hope everyone stayed dry after the storms last night. I saw that Ankeny had 10” and Urbandale 7.5”! @BradS I saw as far north as you in Mason City had 5” or so. Woof, crazy Summer.

That was nuts last night! Ive lived on 15th st for the last 10 years and have never seen anything like what ive seen last night. I was on the computer last night and my doorbell rang at 11pm, got a notifcation on my phone, went to go answer it and its someone wanting to know if they can put this persons car in my driveway overnight. I said sure no problem, i then noticed what seemed like 20 people all outside talking and looking around. I looked around and thought holy cow the streets on the side of me and down the road are all flooded over, just over the curb, one of the ladys said it was higher than that earlier. One of the neighbor kids was laying down in the street of water and almost swimming, another lady said you dont want to do that the sewer drains have backed up and you dont know whats in the water. It wasnt a flow of water that could suck anyone away but still. My basement didnt flood but my nextdoor neighbors did, just enough to splash a bit when you step on the carpet. I checked my rain guage and noticed 3.5 inches in 1 hr.

Some friends in Johnston had a retaining wall around some basement windows collapse, take out the windows, and flood the basement with mud and water about 4 feet deep. It was about a $600k custom house with a basement finished better than the houses I've lived in. Worse, the three girls' bedrooms were all in the basement, so all their belongings, all the mechanicals, and all the inventory for her home-based business were all destroyed. A couple of churches pitched in this morning and emptied the contents of the basement onto the driveway and front lawn. It's heart-breaking.

All the crazy-heavy rains and flooding that goes along with it is one thing I don't miss about living in the midwest.

Hope you're all still safe and dry!

Luckily I was dry in Urbandale, but a lot of people on our cul-de-sac aren't. I took a trip to Home Depot yesterday and there were tons of people with wet carpet and such in their driveways

Any suggestions on someone who can calibrate audio/video for me? I have tried contacting the previously suggested a couple of times both through AVS and his website to no response. Looking for other suggestions for the far eastern Iowa area.

Thanks!

I saw this because I was mentioned by dlbeck in his quote of your post. I checked my e-mail and found your e-mail had gone to "Other" in Outlook instead of "Focused." Sorry. I'm replying right now.

Hello All,
Anyone in Central Eastern Iowa want to get some calibration done this weekend? I believe that it is video only.
Shoot me a PM, and see about getting you in. Would be Friday/Saturday/Sunday, as he is going to Minnesota on Monday morning.
Thanks Russ.

Feels like it’s been a while since there’s been a movie for rent I’ve really looked forward to. A Quiet Place is out and I’m going to actually watch a new movie!

No spoilers. I want to see how the Atmos is! Seems like a good movie for ambient noises all around you.

I keep confusing my intentions with my abilities.

In a FB group some people mentioned that they were disappointed with the Atmos presentation, but Ralph Potts from AVS' blu-ray review team mentions...

"....while invigorating the listening experience with a rousing Dolby Atmos immersive sound mix, and room shaking sound"

So that is probably more reliable/consistent than a set of Facebook group posts by random people.
