is there a guide or specific steps (webpage?) to adjusting or specifically reducing the overscan on a Hitachi RPTV (53UDX)? Is it is possible for this to be set differently for each Input (1-5) or does changing it for one affect them all? I would imagine the convergence would need adjusting afterwards as well.

You must open your set to adjust overscan. I will explain it when I have more time- (sunday night)

You turn those to adjust overscan.

Best done with AVIA in your DVD player on the overscan adjustment and measurment screen.

WARNING: THEY ARE VERY, VERY SENSITIVE- Turn just a little bit at first.

I would also recomend 3-4% since you need a little to re-initialize magic focus and for it to hit the sensors.

I would also recomend centering the screen if needed, and adjusting geometry or convergence after since over scan changes will effect your convergence settings.

If you need more help let me know...

GOOD LUCK---- -MIKE

thanks Mike, the set is currently at about 9-10% overscan and would like to reduce it to 3-4% as you mentioned. I probably wont get a chance to pull the lid until next weekend.

one quick question, does the overscan adjustment affect all 5 inputs equally or can the overscan for each input be adjusted independantly?

Hitachi's usually have controlls seperate for 1080i/480P and 480i.

But, those overscan contolls are caveman style, as well as those magnetic yolks that control screen tilt on the CRT's (don't touch them)

I think they are universal controls, changes you make to overscan should effect all inputs.

You don't want to go too light on your overscan cause on some cable channels you can sometimes see the edge of the picture.

3-4% should be perfect.

Thx for the quick reply Mike,
Just got my set yesterday and i set it up , so far I'm very impressed with the picture feeding from my direct tv, tho my wife think the faces look orange i think they look just fine, it is just that we have been looking at a regular tv for so long that we forgot what true colors suppose to look like :) . I will ordered the avia dvd to further improve the picture. thanks

Mike,

Is there a particular procedure for saving (writing to rom) the settings in service menu when done? Mine don't seem to be saving.

Thanks,

Les

Yes, the PIP buttons do it. Pip Mode I think.

greyscale and things should stick, there is no saving in the IC2 service menu as far as I know, only the DCAM service menu.

Thanks Mfusick!

The screen in VE that I want is the same one that the sharpness pattern is on, right? I think this is where I got my 6% number from.

AVIA has a overscan measurement screen/pattern.

VE is good for grayscale.

AVIA is good for Geometry...

Use AVIA

Yes..

You need to click the Joystick in the service menu....to save things

No click = No save

To Save you simply click the blue joystick down or press it in untill it clicks....

FYI, Pacific Coast Parts Distributors, Inc.
1-800-338-6342 (Oregon as opposed to the California #)
California didn't have it listed.

Ooops! Sorry, I was looking for the Service Manual for the 57xwx20b

Anyway, its not mentioned online ..but, during the phone call, I was
told it comes in CD-Rom form ($18.00 +tax + S&H) Then, the wiring
diagram is yet another item. (another $18.00 +) ..that isn't mentioned
under search for Hitachi and Model #
