I may finally be reaching the "hmm time to clear space" point with the Q. I haven't double checked if I have entirely used up my lamps yet as that will be the deciding factor. It still gets used but shelling out any real amount for lamps (if I can even find them) just wouldn't make sense. Anyone else still using the venerable old 006? I am now experimenting with hdr 4k monitors (finally managed to get the 32" Class 4K UHD IPS LED Monitor with HDR10 (31.5" Diagonal) 32UD99-W monitor after 5 months of backorder). The lighting unfortunately is problematic at least on my set with very uneven lights coming up from bottom reminiscent of the earlier kindles, but it does offer some interesting pop. Given that computer monitors already supported such a huge color spectrum it seems odd that there isn't just a software option to enable hdr (I tend to go with the top end dell ultrasharps so I have always had amazing color gamuts).

I came to AVS to post on the Chromecast Ultra forum and thought I would look at the Q thread. Boy does it bring back memories!
So, hello to everyone who was here in the beginning. Some of you I have even talked to on the phone!

Firing my 006 up with my new Xbox. HAd it sitting for a year unused because I was using a projector. I have always had a problem with this set. The picture is off the screen by a few inches. Like it is zoomed but no settings can get it to normal. I bought it used and I wonder if the guy had the had the optical block replaced and they messed up the alignment. I did a reset with the display 5 vol up power button thing. Still zoomed. Is there a setting I can change in service mode? Is the display 5 vol up power on the service mode or is it a different button combo?

Wow I figured it out. Pressed jump to get to wem service then input input. SPF has all the options to adjust vertical and horizontal position and sizes for both. Picture is perfectly aligned. I feel like a tech god after this. The tv just looks awesome now!!! Anyone jealous I have an 006 still with perfect optical block? Only 15k total hours, time to put some more hours on this thing.

Happy New Year Quaiians! (once a Qualian, always a Quailian).

Wow, hard to believe it was 13 years ago (12/30/04) when I placed my order for the Q006. Even harder to believe that while this thread now only receives sporadic posts -- it is still alive.

My best to all,

JB007

Wow, has it been that long? I thought it was 10 years or so, my how time flies. I'm actually in the process of replacing my 006 Qualia, even though it's still working fine. I must have one of the few that still does, no sign of the Optical Block problem yet, mostly due to VERY low use on this TV. However, I just installed (for a client) a Sony XBR-65X930E and the picture quality (except off-axis) was better in every way than the dependable, beautiful Qualia. So I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a Sony XBR-75X900E within a week or two. It has been a great 13 years, for sure! Loved my Qualia 006!
Happy New Year to all!

I second the best wishes to all. I am watching through a bit of a green blur as the blob now owns the whole screen but as it is just a secondary tv it still works when the family decides to play "Don't Starve Together" in multiple rooms. I am jealous of the perfect optical block Q006 though - those were the days...

Thanks again to all of you for making the journey so much better - some great memories here and I am glad to see even the original thread starter still making an appearance .

Happy New Year All

Greetings -

Since I donated the Q006 to a local law school five years ago, I've had a 70" Elite in our family room.

I decided to pull the trigger on another Sony, and once again, I will be one of the first (Guianea pig?) to receive the XBR-85X900F. Should arrive the first week of April. With fingers crossed for a great viewing experience...

Well, it may be time to get another set...either 75 or 85, but think the 85 may be too big. We did look at the XBR-85X900F and it looked great but some reviews say it has some issues if there is a black scene and there is a bright light like the moon. They say that the colose pixels do not turn black. I wonder what other people think and they say that you could do better than the Sony pricewise...like Samsung.

Also, what is the Z9 that has been discussed? Is it better?

OH...Hello all of the former Q006 peeps!

Qualia Sucker ALL over again!

Ok guys, visiting the old thread for the first time in a long time! I'm such a nostalgic for the old tech toys, I recently got my hands on an old Qualia 004 projector, and have to set it up and get it working now...I always wanted one, and for the ridiculously cheap price, found one in great condition. Heavy as all hell, this thing's a beast! He gave me 2 lamps too! It'll be fun, seeing as my 006 departed for greener pastures (literally) about 8 years ago. Cheers to all!!!

Another fun item to look at the Q900 85" from Samsung costing a "staggering $15,000". Ah memories when 15k wasn't really seen as an insane amount (ok slightly insane). https://www.engadget.com/2018/10/03/...us-pre-orders/

Glad to see thread still getting a few new posts .

Mine is still working fine and still on its original optical block. It still looks very cinematic to me when playing Blu-ray. Not crazy about broadcast video, though. I'm starting to get the itch for a new 4k display and not sure how much longer I can hold off. I certainly got my money's worth out of my Qualia!

My Qualia 006 is still performing fine after its 2nd optical block - going on 12 years!

It still sits in place in a built-in wall enclosure, but now plays 2nd fiddle to a motorized Screen Innovations 120' series 5 screen that ins mounted flush in the ceiling and do to "36" "drop" above the screen, covers the Qualia when lowered. Presently, I project with a JVC RS-600, but I have the new JVC NX9 on order to replace it.

I have both an Anthem AVM-60 and an Anthem AVM-D2v in my rack. The former for projection, the latter now only used to control my old pre/non-HDMI Sony CX777ES 400-disc changer, which is loaded mostly with SACD's and the few DVD's I haven't replaced with Blu-rays or are not available via streaming. Anthem failed us by not provisioning its newer AVM-60 with non-HDM for such "legacy" gear.
My Qualia is now used only with the Sony CX777ES 400-disc changer when I'm playing my 200+/- SACD collection. I cobbled together my own custom device for switching between the two Pre/Pro's AVM-60 and D2v to power the same power amps and speaker system.

Cheers to any and all who still subscribe to this thread!

Cargen,

I've followed this thread for a long time even though I owned a 70" SXRD KDSR70XBR2 rather than a Qualia. Last year I finally replaced my SXRD with a 4K XBR75X900E even though the optical block problems were not too bad. At least I got more than 10 years out of the set. For a screen this large, however, I really like the added resolution of 4K now that I've made a change.

On a different issue, I noticed that you are using Thiel Powerpoint speakers in your system, and I am also a loyal Thiel listener - despite the demise of the company. I use 5 Powerpoint 1.2s in a 5.1 set-up with the smallest of the Thiel subs and a custom Thiel crossover. The sound is so clear and consistent with the 5 identical speakers! My Thiels pre-date any of my big-screen tv's. I'm hoping that the Thiel speakers can continue to make beautiful music and sound even if I decide to make a few more upgrades in my tv over the next few years.

Happy viewing and listening!

SDL,

This reply is off-topic, so I probably should private-message you instead. But what the heck, I doubt this thread is trafficked much anymore and the moderator may not stop by much anymore ).

I love my 7 Thiel Powerpoint 1.2's and 4 Powerplane 1.2's. I originally purchased the Powerpoint as version 1.0's, mostly pre-owned via Audiogon and eBay. The I.2's were later released in a different shape and a much better, more non-resonant iron-type enclosure. I remember phoning Thiel's Lexington KY-based headquarters/factory to inquire would it be possible to have my version 1's remanufactured into the 1.2 version. They agreed to do it for a very reasonable $350 per speaker, which involved simply relocating the speaker diaphragm and related crossover and parts into the new enclosure. I had it done "gradually", whereby, I shipped only 2 at a time, thus never being without an adequate temporary 5.1 system. The 1.2's sound improvement was a nice upgrade over the 1.0 version. When Atmos came along, I found the 4 Powerpoint 1.2's on eBay at a ridiculously wonderful price. Jim Thiel unfortunately passed from cancer several years ago. Jim was a passionate speaker-inventor, tinkerer, perfectionist craftsman. Since his passing, the company was sold, moved to Nashville and has died. Google "Thiel Audio" to locate a "The Last Days of THIEL Audio" dated 3/5/18 in Home Theater Review, which tells the story and also lists a former Thiel employee who provides service for Thiel's up to year 2012.

Prior to installing my dual SVS SB-16 Ultra's, I had had them paired with dual Velodyne DD-15's. While the DD-15's paired reasonably well, the SB-16 Ultra's are a huge improvement over the DD-15's. The SVS remote control via iPhone coupled with the Quick Measure feature of Anthem ARC-2 enables minute adjustments that couple the subs and ceiling mounted eleven (11) Thiel speakers exquisitely. And my media-room with such, enjoys high WAF with the speakers painted out to match my pine wood ceiling )

All you Qualia 006 thread viewers, thank you for enduring my stray so far off topic and my reminisce about a favorite chapter of my A/V hobby. I just turned 70 and it has been a 50-year ride ) !

Thanks for the brief diversion from the Qualia issues. I'll comment about speakers in more detail in the separate Thiel thread.

I second the wish and thanks for helping many of us start this interesting ride. The communal aspects of this definitely made the ups and downs much more bearable.

Question Q006: sell or give away? [selling our house]

Hi all -- The house our Q006 was built around [slight exaggeration] is now in contract; by the end of the month I need to either sell my Q006, donate it, or include it with the sale. Is there any point in trying to sell a television of this age? It's lightly used hours-wise, in great shape, and I have a couple of extra light engines/bulbs. Any positive feedback would be most welcome, as I really have no idea whether there's still a market for yesterday's hotness...

Given the performance and other aspects of the Q006 I would have to say sadly that selling it is likely to be an issue for any real amount of money. When you say light engines a part of me is quite curious. Are you saying you have extras of the part that causes the green screen of death? If only you lived locally as a Q enthusiast I would be tempted - mine still gets reasonably regular use but considering it is seen with through green-colored blobness it really isn't a great experience. I am keeping it alive until I have used the last of my lamps (which I may be already on haven't gone box diving in a while to check). Given the size and 1080i I just can't see anyone wanting to buy it unless it came with the house . I would say if you had to put a value on it - hard to imagine more than a few hundred dollars. Just too large, picture quality isn't high enough, takes too much energy and gives off too much heat to be 1k+ anymore.

Assuming you do have the insanely expensive light engines sadly the cost to have one installed is probably more than the worth of the tv at this point I would think (it was a multihour job requiring quite a bit of expertise as I remember from my replacement). If only that was a do it yourself scenario would be cool to see a Q in all of its original glory again.

I am interested in how the tale ended. Did the Q keep its perch with new ownership?
