Hi guys,

I have owned a few projectors over the years, but have now been on a 6-year drought. The house I am in now has a small room that I can use as a "theater"...viewing distance is about 9 feet, and from what I read from THX and SMTPE, I want about a 36-degree field-of-view, which amounts to an 80-inch screen (-ish).

I have been reading a lot of reviews, and sometimes folks talk about a projector being TOO BRIGHT for a room (wan't much of a concern 5-10 years ago, was it?). Even to the extent that the folks over at Projector Central talk of using a neutral density filter to cut down the projected light, even with a projector in ECO mode.

My budget is less than $1000 (buying used is A-OK with me), 1080p for sure. And I'd love to get "good" black levels, but I also know I have to be realistic. Other than that, I am flexible. My screen is a white Draper with a 1.0 gain, but I could change that out if need be...maybe even by doing a DIY screen (my last screen was DIY with grey "Goo").

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

The best bargain right now while they last is the Mits HC7900DW. I just received mine Fri replacing an Optoma HD33 and the black level is considerably improved. I had no complaints with the HD33 but this bargain was to much to pass up.
