Background- I plan on being a new owner to a projector for my home theater/entertainment room. I don’t consider myself a hard core videophile, but I am technical and definitely pickier than the average person. I currently own a four year old Panasonic VT series plasma in the living room. Other than that I will have nothing to compare the new PJ setup to. I love how vibrate and accurate the color is on the plasma. I am hoping to get the best possible picture that makes sense dollar wise.

Use case- The projector will be used as movies/3d gaming/DirecTV. I would like to be able to have a small amount of ambient light when watching sports games with friends. I will have complete control over lighting in a basement via canned lights. Ceiling will be black with dark grey walls. Otherwise, the room will be completely dark for other activities. I realize I am asking for the PJ to do it all:) I would break it down to this:

Blu-ray/HD movies 35%
DirecTV sports 35%
Gaming 15%
3D Gaming/ 3D Blu-ray 15%

3D and gaming are at the lower end of my priorities, but I still want a high level of performance for those. I will likely enjoy the occasion animated 3D movie with the family. The 3D gaming will mostly be for Sim racing from PC, which 3D greatly enhances the immersion.

Equipment-With needs above in mind, here is what I have selected so far:
PJ- Epson 5030ub – I feel this the best all-around projector at reasonable price. It should be able to cut through some ambient light when required to. Seems decent at 3D and decent input lag(37ms) when in fast processing mode
Screen – 120” 16:9 Elite Fixed mount with Cinewhite- 1.1 gain
AVR/Audio- not being discussed in this thread

Here is the layout:

I like the idea of a U shaped couch for hanging out. I would not consider the extreme edges of the couch to be watchable seats. The seats I consider to be watchable are 10-12’ from the center of the screen. This will seat up 8 people. While some of the outer seats are not ideal, they are still mostly within the width of the screen. I would consider moving the couch back a bit, but the posts in the basement are preventing it. The post on the far left will be removed. The projector will be ceiling mount within a few inches of the minimum for a 120" screen. I am thinking keeping the PJ as close as possible to keep brightness up.

Anyway, I didn't want this to be a HT build thread. I just want some thoughts on the Projector choice, screen, and seating. I feel like it’s a little on the aggressive side for the size of the room, but it should offer a great balance between entertaining guests and dedicated movies/games.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Sounds like a good plan the 5030 should work well in that room although it does have some gaming lag and 3D is not as good as the DLP models. I would look at the Mits HC7900DW at $799 its 1/3 the cost of the 5030, great 3D ( I don't know about LAG but DLP's are usually good) although not as bright. If you design your lights so they don't shine on the screen ether directly or reflectively it should be OK.
