Turn it on and see the size you get. You just need to make sure you can fill 120 inch screen. I have my lens exactly at 15 feet from my 120 inch screen. I sit 13 feet from the screen and its perfect.

Sony 45es | 120 inch screen | Panasonic BDT500 | Rotel RMB-1075 | Rotel RMB-1077 | Rotel RSP-1068 | Klipsch RP-280F/RP-450C/RP-160M (x4) | Funk Audio subs (x2) | MiniDSP 2x4HD | Crowson D-501/Shadow-8 Actuators (x2) | Monster Power Conditioner | GIK acoustic panels

The projector calculator at ProjectorCentral.com says an HW45ES can fill a 120" screen from a range of 3.6m to 5.7m (lens to screen). If your lens is exactly 5m from your screen you should be fine.

I still can not test this because of the HDMI cable .
That's should be fitted the 120" screen but just worry about the quality , the bright , etc ...

Looks like no BF sale. Might hold out until Monday to see if it goes on sale for Cyber Monday. Some really good deals on big 4K LCDs that are making me question my projector choice!

No matter how good the tv is or how cheap they are.....they simply won't give you the immersive feel of a projector.

I am considering the HW45ES but struggling a bit to find a good place to buy it from.

I am from Canada (West - Lower mainland).

Anyone else from Canada that has gotten the projector, would you be able to let me know where you got it from?

I have only found eastporters so far, emailed them for price but apparently it is against Sony's policy to disclose the price through email, so I'd need to give them a call by phone on Monday. Though not sure I like them pushing their screens so much, I already own a DIY screen (though I am sure it would be lesser quality than the one they offer), so for now I'd prefer to only get the projector, so not quite sure if they have a good deal on it or not, I guess I'll find out on Monday.

But I also read somewhere in this thread that they are not actually an authorized dealer so that worries me a bit. Not sure if that would mean that if I need any warranty repair I'd be out of luck as Sony won't accept it.

Even with eastporters, I'd have to have it shipped all the way to the west but I guess that is not something to be too concerned about.

If you have been through this or know of a good place to buy it from in Canada, please let me know. Not sure if listing stores here is allowed or not, but if it is not just PM me.

That does take me to the Sony Canada store locator web page, but searching for Televisions & Home Theater, within 100km of both Burnaby, BC and Toronto, Ontario, just gives me "No records found" for some reason.

I have also tried going from the projector's web page itself to "Where to buy" but it only lead me to a few high profile companies that seem to only deal with bigger installation projects.

I also don't think it hurts to hear from other people's experience, related to warranties, in stock, other customer experience.

Well that only found a bunch of London Drugs, Best Buy, The Brick stores, none of which are really selling this.
Maybe I could go to Best Buy and ask if one can be special ordered, even though they don't seem to have it listed on their web site for sale.
But would have been really convenient if there is a more straight forward way to find one.

I do think we had actual Sony stores around here until a couple of years ago, but then for some reason they closed them all.

Would really help if there is someone from Canada here that had already bought this to give some guidance.

Anybody care to post what screen they are using with their 45es?
I'm interested in color of screen, gain, size and light conditions. Do you like what you have or wish you did it differently.
I am about to start purchasing and would like some guidance.
Mine will be 110" in a light controlled room. Movies at night in total darkness but able to watch a decent picture for an afternoon football game with some ambient light.
Thanks ( and I have been reading tons of posts so far but not many found to give me a good idea ).
Just curious what you are using!

alextr75,

I live in the lower mainland as well. You can buy the 45es from Visions or Sunny Electronics although they might be on back order. I was also told that Sony was very strict on pricing.

Good luck.

That is a trick question.

Mainly because Plex is used to play your own media and you don't mention anything about the format of your own 3D movies.

Plex also has plugins for many "channels" but I don't know if any of those offer 3D or what format those are in.

Finally.... I'm not familiar with the 3D playback ability of the FireTV.... I guess I'm just not qualified to answer this.

If you have some 3D movies in side by side or top over bottom format then most anything (Including the fire and plex) will play them back with no problem. The projector may not recognize the movie as 3D but you can tell it the format using the remote and it will work.

What mount is everyone using with the 45ES ?

I'm about to pull the trigger and need recommendations for the mount. I have a home built in 2008 with a dedicated media room. Is everyone using the peerless mount if so which one?

Well I just placed an order with Eastporters. They had a few in stock and were really helpful in answering any questions / concerns I had.
It is going to take a week or so for shipping though, so looking forward to it.

They said they are actually a Sony authorized dealer. I have read somewhere in this thread before that they are not, so maybe that has changed in the meantime. At this point I guess I just have to trust them and hope they would not misrepresent themselves. They did say they can test for basic issues (convergence , etc ..) before shipping if I am ok with not receiving a factory sealed product, so at least that gives me some piece of mind.

I could not see their name on the Sony's dealer locator web page, but neither was I able to find any of the other stores that were mentioned here. Not really sure how reliable that web page is.

It'd be funny if my mount does not work with it, they said the holes on the projector are pretty close together (although so are the ones on my Epson), if not it'd have to be another week or so waiting for a new mount I guess.

Edit: Sorry blindbandit, I had you quoted here by accident and then removed the quote. As I sad earlier though, I currently own the Atdec TH-WH-PJ-FM that I got a while ago with my previous BenQ W1070. It is not as good as the ones that normally get recommended here, but I already have it, so I will give it a try. If not I will be in a search for a better one too.

Total darkness, I only use it for movies only. Any ambient light will wash out the picture. You could use small ambient light as long as its not shining toward the screen but like with any projector setup they look better in complete darkness.

Unless they operate under a different name, they are not listed as an authorized dealer. Here is a list of authorized dealers per the Sony website. Maybe this is just U.S. dealers? Maybe the list isn't fully up to date? I'm not sure.

I finished my projector set up couple of weeks back with Sony 40ES which is the previous model, but suspect not significantly different from 45ES. My screen is Silver Ticket 135 inch with gray material. My mount is Peerless PRG Series PRG-EXC 1. My set up is in basement with some ambient light during the day and pretty much dark during night. I use the projector mainly for movies and cannot recommend high enough Sony projector for quiet operation and pic quality. Blue Ray looks stunning and old movies are great as well. Animation from Netflix is so so though. Good luck with your set up.

That is indeed just for US dealers (as confirmed by their live chat support operator), for Canada they were only able to point me to the web page:

https://www.sony.ca/en/dealerlocator

which for some reason does not work properly for me (clicking 'Search' does not do anything for me in both Chrome and Firefox), so I will try that again later today.

So Live chat was not very helpful.

I also tried emailing them, but the response was that for ES products I should be calling a dedicated Sony ES team, because they only deal with TV and Blu-Rays. Calling the number they gave me, I was told they only have info about US and not for Canada and gave me a Canadian phone number.

Calling that number trying to get through their menus, I was once transferred to a department that did not have that information, tried a second time and ended up somewhere else with no luck again, so gave up.

A bit of a frustrating experience, wonder how it would be if I actually do need to submit a claim for some warranty work.

I have also tried dealerlocator.sony.ca posted here by another member, but that only shows a small set of stores, and does not show a few others either that have been mentioned here already as actually being Sony authorized dealers, so not really sure how reliable that is. Maybe it is just for TVs and such.

I actually asked Eastporters too why they don't show up on the Sony's web page and they responded they have already complained about this to their Sony account manager and they had answered there are some issues with the recently changed System for Canadian dealers on the Sony's site.

I guess I will just have to trust them and / or hope for the best as I have already placed the order.

If I was actually able to find a dealer through their Web site that was present in Canada and was indeed selling this projector, I would have gladly bought it from them, but apparently it is a somewhat difficult process .. or I am terrible with computers and looking for information online

Edit: I have to add that the guy I ended up talking to about ES products in the US, was indeed trying to be helpful and felt bad not having the information I need, so I do not want to sound like I am bashing Sony, but I do wonder if the US gets a somewhat better customer support and experience.

I've been so busy I haven't had time to install my 45ES, so it was sitting in its unopened box for the last 6 weeks... Finally I get some time to install it tonight, only to discover the thing doesn't come with mount screws. Dammit! Oh well, off to the hardware store I go, some time this week I guess.

What length screws would you recommend? It says max 8 mm.

BTW, here is the comparison in size against my Panasonic PT-AX200U. Good timing too, since that lamp has almost 2000 hours on it.

HW45ES arrived a day early Installed and working great! I read a lot about "eco" mode, but I can't find any setting for it, in the menu or OM. Also, I knew it didn't have the best contrast ratio, but I am a little surprised at how bright the blacks are. Room is pitch black, screen is 1.1, but when watching 2.35 movies on my 1.85 screen the top/bottom bars are very noticeable.

I haven't had time to play with all the settings, and reducing brightness from 50 to 40 made a noticeable difference. I just updated the software, not sure if that will make any difference (wife is watch TV on it at the moment).

Is there anything I might be missing?

What length screws would you recommend? It says max 8 mm.

BTW, here is the comparison in size against my Panasonic PT-AX200U. Good timing too, since that lamp has almost 2000 hours on it.

Thanks for the pic! I have a PT-AE900U and is probably close the same size as your PT-AX200u. Great to see the comparison side by side. The 45ES is HUGE! Might have to adjust my mount length and anamorphic lens placement. Mine should arrive tomorrow. Super excited!

OK, you asked for it:

When in doubt read the operating instructions.

But don't look for eco as Sony doesn't use that term. You want Picture Menu, Cinema Black Pro, Lamp Control and then change from High to Low.

Black levels should improve once you get all the adjustments properly dialed in for your viewing conditions. The HW45ES has a deep menu system with lots of different settings and user options. Reading the operating instructions is a good place to start learning what all is available.
