Lens Memory Function Driving Me Crazy

Maybe someone can help. I have had this same problem over and over with this projector. I set the lens memory function very carefully according to Post 4180:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/68-di...l#post48985465

I get everything set up with zoom, lens shift, and blanking perfectly for my screen down to the pixel. I test and re-test and everything is good to go. We watch several movies and all works perfect. Then, out of nowhere, we are watching a movie maybe a month or two later, and I notice the lens shift is off by 2 or more inches! Sometimes on the top, sometimes on the left/right. I really don't understand and it's incredibly frustrating after spending all that time and then randomly it just throws itself out of alignment.

Any ideas?

In my experience, the lens emory isn't perfect. I usually have to tweak it into position every time I change lens position. Although, it's usually pretty close, in my situation I have a drop down ceiling channel in my basement and I mounted the PJ within a gnat's ass as high as I could and still hit the upper corner of the screen.

Hope someone can help... I purchased this a little over 2 years ago and I was watching tv and the image went out all of a sudden. Never happened before. The unit powers on but no image is displayed. It is mounted up on the ceiling.

It gets power, the blue light flashes for about a minute then steady orange light comes on once turned from off to on.

What do you think the issue is and what should I do?

Thanks

I read the manual, based on the light behaviors (flashing or fixed blue or orange) it says there is a problem with the lamp or it is overheating (I checked the air filter and it was pretty clean).

I opened the lamp housing to take a look and attached pictures here.

Some questions:

1) When a projector lamp goes out does it stop working right away or dim over time? Mine stopped immediately. It throws out no image at all.

2) Here are pictures of the lamp. About 40% of its surface area is not clear and is foggy/whitish.

http://s000.tinyupload.com/download.php?file_id=18252182462085061433&t=182521 8246208506143334820

3) Should I try fixing it by replacing the lamp? I’ve had it over 2 years and have never changed it. If so, should I just swap the lamp out or should I buy the housing+bulb?

I would imagine replacing the lamp would be the first option.
How many hours over the 2 years?

I'm considering getting in on the crazy good refurb deals...

Will I notice a decent/big improvement over my current Epson 4000 with the 5040?

I know blacks should be noticeably better, but what about contrast?

Thanks

Quick question to see if anyone else has experienced this. My Epson 5040ub I turn off in the evening, blue lights go off and lamp shuts off. I then come back Into the theater the following day and the Epson lamp is on. No idea why this is happening and has happened on multiple occasions. There should be no input causing this since I use simple control on a iPad mini. Anybody else experienced this mysterious automatic turning on of the lamp? Thanks in advance.

With the Power On Link option, a device connected to the HDMI input can turn on the projector. Check your projector setting to see if that option is turned on.

Hmmmm... I do have that option turned on and have an Apple TV hooked up. I’ll disable that and see how it goes. Thanks.

If some device tries to AirPlay on the Apple TV that could turn on the projector.

Does the 5040UB upscale 1080p input signal to 4k?

I've tried switching the projector upscaling feature on and off with the 1080p/60hz feed and I see no difference even though the menu says that it is 'enhancing'. I let the XBOX upscale for this reason and I do see a difference in picture quality. I prefer the projector upscaling, but it is only available for the 24hz feed.
This has been my upscaling experience as well.

Good to know for me. I can set apps on the Nvidia Shield to 24fps (like Netflix), while the menu and everything else will be set at 60fps.

Any one using running MadVR with the new HDR Dynamic Optimizer program for your video source?

For those you who are, which route did you take to calibrate your pj for hdr (harpervision, oledurt, ect)? Would you calibrate the same whether you were running MadVR or not?

Epson 5040UB turns on then nothing

Having an issue with my Epson 5040. Come up to the mancave to watch a movie and when I turned it on, the light blinked for a few seconds (30 maybe) then was on solid, it showed the Epson logo then went blank and now it won't respond to anythin from the remote, or the buttons on the pj itself. I have to unplug it to turn it off. Any suggestions?

I, having an issue I hope someone can help with. When I turn the unit on (5040ub), the blue light flashes for about 45 seconds then stays solid, meanwhile the Epson logo comes up and then the screen goes blank. After that theres no response from the pj with the remote, or with the buttons on the side of the unit. I have to unplug it to turn it off, then when I turn back on same thing happens.

So either I'm unlucky (possible and typical even ) or they really aren't quality checking these refurbs.

Original refurb purchased direct from Espon.com in April had pink hues on the top right corner out of the box - serial number X334691747L

1st refurb RMA replacement had six dust blobs fresh out of the box on power up. I didn't even hook it up, I just boxed it back up and sent it back to Epson - serial number - X334710215L

3rd refurb RMA replacement had pink hue on the right side of the screen immediatey out of box. I'm working on sending it back now - serial number X334680597L

I'd almost decided to just live with some of these defects, but then thought Epson's motto is to exceed expectations, and they say that these refurbs should be just like a new model - so I'm going to hold them to it. I'll keep switching these things out till the cows come home. They are paying for shipping, while I'm surely wasting my time, but at this point, I'm going to be stubborn. I'm also going to increasingly propagate my dissatisfaction to the various forums I frequent, and facebook, etc, if they don't get this turned around. Customer service is typically very nice, but just shuffling around B-Stock projectors isn't going to fly without consequence. I wrote their customer service a long e-mail and linked to these pictures/posts last night. Maybe that'll get this turned around.

I just got my 1st 5040 refurb and it looks like yours. Mostly the top right section is overly pink on a white screen. Getting ready to send it back.

How do you get to those test image screens on the 5040?

There is a user adjustment that’s intended to correct panel uniformity.

I was hit with the dead 5040ub today. I knew this was an issue, but thought I was safe from it. Went on the site and my warranty literally expired 2 weeks ago. Please tell me that Epson will not be D-bags about replacing this unit. On top of everything it has extremely low hours for a projector of this age. Anyone had theirs die so close to the warranty ending?

If they don’t honor the warranty does anyone know the cost of having the PSU replaced? Thanks.

My issue was the lamp. First time changing and once I did it is working back to normal.

Some tips I leaned:

- If the bulb has a cloudy look, it can be out. Based on my research, it’s best (value wise) to get the OEM bulb don’t go for refurbs if you plan to keep it a while. More expensive but not paying Russian roulette on how many hours you’ll get
-The manual has a good description of various button/light behaviors to help narrow down the problem

Some questions:
-Mine was purchased in 2016. Should I upgrade firmware or keep original? Any benefits or bugs in the new firmware?
-Can someone share calibration settings with me? Or is calibration dependent on the source player/cable/projector and sharing settings is pointless? If sharing settings is pointless - how can I calibrate it myself? I don’t like the idea of paying for this because if I I need to reset it or something I’m guess all settings will be lost

I also have a question on 4K. When I go to stores I see displays that show amazing details and colors, very lifelike.

Despite streaming Prime 4K movies, I have never seen that level of detail on the projector. I see what I recognize to be 1080p but not 4K.

What can I do?

You have to realize that on a panel TV, the projection distance is cm, not meters, and the pixels are much, much smaller. The larger you blow up the picture, the less detail you retain.

Sounds like your PJ is a victim of the power supply failure bug that plagued many 5040/6040 units. I had exactly the same symptoms with my first 6040. I recommend you call Epson and discuss your options. They are certainly aware of the problem.

I was kinda thinking that at first, but I couldn't find anything about them acting that way. I also talked to an authorized repair place and he told me it didn't sojnd like the supply . I'll give Epson a shout though

I just saw the deal for the 5040ub for $1150 with 2 bulbs, refurbed, direct from Epson. Here's my dilemma:

Currently rocking an Epson 8350 (7 years) on a Seymour DIY 104" 16:9 acoustically transparent screen. I'm thinking of going 2.35:1 at around 125 inches, and this would do nicely. However, I will not have any time to redo my screen wall until my holiday break for 2 weeks in December. I'm intrigued by the price and free bulb, but would hate for it to sit here for 4 months losing warranty. Think this deal is going to last a while, or do I need to jump on it?

Also, are we talking a night and day difference in PQ from my 8350 to this? I still can't believe how good my screen looks, even after all this time. My current bulb is sitting around 500 hours, so still kinda fresh. I played Planet Earth 2 on it a few nights ago, and if you had told me it was 4k, I may have believed you.

Can anyone point me to the latest HDR and SDR preferred/recommended settings for the 5040?

Anyone had theirs die so close to the warranty ending?

If they don’t honor the warranty does anyone know the cost of having the PSU replaced? Thanks.
Top notch customer service. Contact the California office for even better service. They even have an agent who reads this thread. You will not have any problems getting a warranty replacement with only a couple of weeks expired. I know because they told me so. I would expect that original owners from authorized retailers with warranties expiring to continue to be offered refurbs for the rest of 2019 as well.
