Quick and I hope, easy question. I turned on HDMI control on the projector so it will turn on when my Denon receiver turns on, but it isn’t. I unplugged and re-plugged both devices and removed/re-inserted the HDMI cable but neither made any difference. Something else I need to do?

Had a lady friend pop over late last week for a pizza and beers and she wanted to see what Avatar looked like on my setup.
Put it on and I could actually hear the enamel as her jaw hit the floor. She practically wept with joy. Wait until she sees it in 3D next week. We’re both Scuba divers, so I plan to show her Ocean Wonderland in 3D as well.

I havent really noticed to be honest. I have it on setting 4 with sharpness to 9 and everything looks amazing. This is with 1080p bluray and streaming.

Can anyone with a Panny UB820 confirm how they get Netflix to work on this projector in 4k (non HDR)?
I went to watch something last night and could only get 1080p HDR no matter what settings I used.

Did you try changing the UB820’s Resolution Setting from Auto to 4K?

Anyone here using the 5040 with PAINT ON SCREEN instead of a screen?

I am upgrading my Elite Screen Cinegrey 3D 150" 16:9 to a 180" 2.35:1 and wondering if I can get the same performance using POS S1 Screen plus or 3D4K?

Any insight would greatly be appreciated

Thanks!

I can't search this thread for "PS4" as the term is too short, along with "HDR".

Off of the top of my head I'm not sure there are any PS4 games that can run 4k (or checkerboard 4k) while also running at 60fps. Most if not all games will be running at 30Hz or lower. The 5040 can accept a 4k HDR 30Hz signal but I can't seem to be able to set my PS4 to that. When I enable HDR the PS4 auto defaults down to 1080p which I assume is based on the EDID info it is getting back from the system. Is there to force 4k/30Hz/HDR on PS4 that anyone has discovered.

Knowing the pulse of all things DIY Screen-wise as I do, I can state (once more) that POS products do not offer anywhere near the performance and adjust-ability, let alone the value (...all of which have been vetted by a great many...) of what you'll find waiting for you over on the DIY Screen Forum.

It should be patently obvious that something is lacking as you can go back several years worth of Threads and find nary a single end user of POS. That's not to say there are none whatsoever....but usually if someone has something noteworthy to claim bragging rights about, there would be at least some mention.

You can only wind up paying too much for applications that are themselves limited in scope. Why not give us over on DIY Screens the chance to make you just as happy as have the many 1000s that have gone down that road before.

A project such as yours demands definitive results, results you can depend on,,,so you chose.

Hello!

I wrote in the official 2040-thread, but more are using this thread so I'll post it here also (and because I now have the 6040 )

I have a problem with my previous Epson 2040 that I have given to my brother. It loses connection almost every day, always when changing the refresh rate when watching a movie in Kodi for example, but only the picture goes away and the sound continues. The only way to get the picture back you need to restart the computer.

Does anybody have any idé what could be wrong or something I can try to fix it? It's hooked trough a Sony STR-DH550 and he's using a computer. Thanks!

Hi...How long is your HDMI cable? Is it a cheap one?

I have a Sony AV amp that was doing that (I had a 25 foot cable attached and embedded in walls and floor, fed up a pillar to near where the projector is). I recently found out that the HDMI port on the receiver sends a small voltage, and it's only good for about 15 feet. My receiver used to blank out all the time similar to what you're describing. Solved it by going to an optical HDMI cable. Expensive, but cheaper than a new amp or replacing the HDMI port in the projector. You can also try network cabling. That also removes the length restriction on HDMI cables.

I am a newbie with projectors. I am in the proses of making a home theatre in my bacment but I am still several months away from setting the projector up. I decided to picked up a refurbished 5040ub from Epson, seemed like a great deal to pass up. It arrived last week. I want to make sure that I don't have a defective unit since It won't be use untill my room is done.(several month away) I can set it up temporarily on my brother's screen. What test should I run and things I should be looking out for? Thanks for any advice

I use a paint on screen...and it's gorgeous! However, I don't really have anything to compare it to because I have never used anything else. And yes, many 'enthusiasts' here will say I'm missing out...and I probably am! I *did*, however, spend a lot of time getting my wall prepped before applying the paint, etc...

Thanks for the reply!

have you used it on 3D movies?
Which version of paint did you get and what did you apply it on? Drywall? Sprayed or rolled?

Hello, I need a little pre-sale help for a dedicated home theater in a new house.

I had been planning to buy a 5040 for this project but as time went on, it got phased out, and I read about all the issues people were having. I am still pretty much sold on an Epson Projector, and possibly still the 5040. I have been using a BenQ 1080 in my previous HT which I disassembled a few weeks ago. It's great but can't handle the size of screen I want (and I am ready to move on after a good 5yr run).

Room is 14' x 30', painted dark, no windows. I am planning to use a 150" AT screen. I'm not even sure I care about 4k content at the moment, and would basically want a good looking 1080 picture for movies that I own on BluRay.

I'd like to stick under $2000. That's not a hard stop, but I think the 5050 is just a bit over where I want to be. Here are the options I am looking at for now.

5040ub refurb - $1150
Pretty good deal, if you get a good one. If not, seems like a heck of a process

5040 new - $1800
Seems like a poor choice if it will potentially have the same powersupply issue as the refurbs

4010 new - $1800
Seems to get good reviews, have the features I need and not have PS issues. Haven't really done enough looking at this model yet

So, in SEPT of 2019, to 5040 or not? Would you still buy one today?

TIA

I went to watch something last night and could only get 1080p HDR no matter what settings I used.
This is not possible with the 820, unfortunately. The 820 has streaming output locked to 60Hz. 4kHDR at 60Hz requires an 18gbps HDMI connection and the 5040/6040 can do only 10gbps. I have complained numerous times to Panasonic about this (the Sony players, for example, output in native 24hz so 4kHDR works fine via Amazon and Netflix for 24hz content) but they seem to have no interest in fixing it. Beyond this there are other negative consequences of the 60Hz output (sync issues on Amazon Prime video, odd judder effects, etc.).

Unfortunately the 820 is not ideal for streaming. You are better off using a dedicated device which supports frame-rate matching for streaming Netflix and Amazon Prime (Roku Ultra, Nvidia Shield, etc.).

EDIT: Sorry, I now see that you were mentioning non-HDR 4k. That also will not work it seems (though according to the settings and Panasonic's vague and terrible documentation one would think that it should). Due to the output being fixed to 60Hz you will have to enable 4k60 4:2:0 in the UB820 (it is the only 4k60 chroma subsampling that works at 10gbps). Even at that setting, though, most people report that streaming services are not outputting correctly.

Epson 6040ub
Denon AVR-X3400H + Mirage OMD-5 surrounds
Home-made Hybrid PCB Electrostatic Floorstanding L+R Speakers (with built-in DSP + amps)
Home-made sub with 15" Ultimax woofer, Dayton SA1000 Amp
Sony PS4, Sony UBP-X800, Panasonic DP-UB820

Is it better to have the nvidia shield set its display to 4k 24hz or 1080p? Does the shield upscale the 1080 videos if set to 4k or would the 5040ub upscale it to 4k if the shield is set at 1080? Which to use?

I can't speak for the Shield but the 5040/6040 does a fine job of upscaling from 1080 to 4k. Furthermore, if you want to use any frame interpolation (I don't like it so I don't use it) then you will want to do the upscaling in the 5040. If the 5040 receives a 4k signal then frame interpolation is disabled.

Thanks. But if I set the shield to 1080, then I am guessing 4k options wont show up on netflix

that is an issue. u can get all marks green with linker and Xbox X, but 60fps, 4k, hdr will be only at 8 bit, - which is problem. you will get HDR start to work, which is great... but it will cost you bad picture as its 8bit only, exactly as you said. every game, just look at the sky and you will see that banding.... which really annoys me. But I find another solution. Linker can perfectly transfer 4k to 1080p and keep 60fps and HDR at maximum, 12bit, or 10 bit... and than WOW , just wow how HDR games looks like on xbox one x and this projector. In some games 4k, 60fps, hdr 8bit is fine, banding is not so visible, but its rare... usually it annoys a lot and you have less wow effect, than using hdr 12bit. interesting to see how you prefer it?? that banding really annoys me with 4k hdr 8bit ;(

Am I correct in that if I connect a PC I can get 4:4:4 on the Epson with or without the Fury?
EDIT: Impossible to get any more than 4:2:0 with the 5040

Only one potential issue still exists using the HDFury, and perhaps the main reason Microsoft went with 10-bit instead of the 8-bit that the 5040's HDMI chip's bandwidth can handle is because of the color banding created with an 8-bit signal.
I've seen this a lot on LG OLED TV threads where users who watched 8-bit 4K could see banding on scenes where colors darkened or lightened.

Wouldn't this be far more prevalent the larger the screen size?

Could you take a high quality picture of the same shot you posted, but focus on on an area where the image goes from pure black to lighter black/gray? Interested to see if there's banding, which from the data would seem highly probable.

Decisions decisions once again. A JVC RS420 can be had for only a few hundred $'s more if you take into account the added cost of the $250 HDFury Linker to get the 8-bit signal to be accepted by the XB1X. And latency is about the same as the Epson for all intent purposes (I think 6ms slower which is negligible).

Thanks.

hay man, thanks for this post. I setted it up and everything working perfectly with xbx x. Did you find solution for that banding with games 4k, HDR 8 bit, 60fps ? 8bit is just not enough, picture is very much degraded, especially on sky in every game... ;( .... but hdr is fine, I can see the difference. switching linker to downscale to 1080p, 60fps, HDR 12bit is bloody great for gaming... you will just loose 4k, but HDR will be at its best. thank foy your opinion... if you still read this forum, as its quite old... but still valid, as this models of PJ are still at work

[Update 12/11/2017] - Download and use firmware .25 (version 21), use the link below and go to download section.
Manual, firmware, drivers and software can be found here:

You can either use a computer to do all that or buy an additional bluetooth adapter so you wont need a computer for the configuration (its just easier if you dont want to disconnect and move rooms each time, not a must:

Once you get it and put the 19a firmware, here are the config settings you need to do.
added both from PC and via the Geo Blue.
if you follow these settings exactly it will work with XB1S and get all greens.
Honestly, this should be a sticky

Guess I should start looking into the linker for my PS4 pro. I decided on running 1080p HDR for most games and they look pretty great, although I've been running Control in 4k as it has no HDR.
