Overall a decent projector....communication...not so much!

It's so stupid. These companies presumably spend large sums of money updating the firmware, creating the files, uploading them, updating the websites and - presumably - the newer firmware does actually do something/improve the products...

...and then nobody downloads them or updates their machines because they have no idea what the changes will be and/or whether or not it'll break their unit.

All of which could be avoided by a small paragraph on the website that tells people what the update brings.

Epson’s lack of communication and transparency is obviously a conscience corporate decision that runs counter to the direction of many other corporate entities. In today’s global marketplace, the automotive recalls lead the way in this regard. Closer to home with respect to the consumer electronics industry, Onkyo’s recent “public” ownership of its HDMI board failures is a prime example of corporate responsibility. And as you suggest, providing a simple “change log” for firmware updates as many companies do would go a long way in establishing consumer confidence. Epson’s leadership apparently believe otherwise.

When I calibrated my 5040UB using the WOW disc, I did so using Bright Cinema for HDR content and Natural for SDR content. Obviously I was guessing at HDR as I have no idea how to calibrate for that. Does everyone use one input for both HDR and SDR or separate ones?

Also, when watching HDR content, the whites (highlights) seem to be blown out. I'm sure this is due to the HDR not being properly calibrated. Can you copy Bright Cinema so you can have an HDR version that can be visually calibrated using HDR content then have an SDR version for non HDR content that is calibrated with the calibration disc?

I use custom bright cinema and do auto I think for both. I mainly use SDR for it, but HDR comes out just OK

The fact that this is actually happening is ridiculous. How can they publish a firmware update without release notes? On a publicly available website nonetheless? That is just stupid.

Interesting that William either doesn’t know or doesn’t have the authority to share information. In either case, Epson is eons behind in providing this type of information as well as customer service/satisfaction. This should easily and automatically be a “push” process and and not a “pull.” In any case, thanks for your effort!

Greatings everyone, this is my first post on here.

Please excuse my ignorance as I did not grow up with a computer being born in the 60's.

I must say these forums are a hand full as it seems I've has to spend days reading through it to try and figure a answer to one's question. Why is this forum presented in a linear manner instead of say under the headline of epson 5040ub there are sub forums for all the answered or discussed questions? Say perhaps like...

-epson 5040ub color settings

-Refurbished problems

-optimal viewing settings

-tips and tricks

-etc.

Here is my situation...

I have just bought a refurbished epson 5040ube and within 45 minutes the auto iris failed. Now I am on my second unit and so far so good that I get to play with it.

When attempting to view 4k shows via my computer from Amazon prime I could only get 1080p. From research I gather that one needs a streaming box for the projector to view it in 4k.

So I read again (for a few days sadly) and it seemed like the Nvidia shield 4k was the most capable and apparently if I wanted to watch Netflix in 4k it could down convert the frame rate from 60 to 30 hdr so the projectors could handle it.

So I got my Nvidia today and fired it up and looked up the settings and found where I could lock it down to 4k 30 frames. Since right now I am only a prime member I fired up a episode of jack Ryan that is 4k and to my surprise it only played in 1080p and clearly did not look 4k.

What gives?

Also when struggling to find the areas of this forum to find the custom picture settings I seem to have failed. I searched and searched again for this mythical harper vision pdf and have yet to find it. Nor to my searching have I found links to other custom setting to prefect my picture color with hdr.

Would anyone be able to supply page numbers to some good examples or screen shots or for that matter is there a trick to properly search to get the results one desires?

Sorry for the long post... I just what to get my first 4k projector working to it's max potential.

P. S. When it comes to upscaling... Use the upscaler on my reciever, the Nvidia, the projector or a combination of all three? (I have a Sony str-dn1070)

What are your settings to get a sharp and beautiful picture as possible?

Thanks

I'll try to help as I have just about the same equipment :

Upscale in the Shield

In the shield set your resolution to 4k 23.97Hz Hdr Ready (if Hdr Ready is not showing then you hav some connection issue: using a non-hdmi 2.0 port on the receiver or projector will do it).

Use "Natural" color mode on the projector for SDR content, experiment with others for Hdr.

My honest opinion is that the Epson is not equipped to provide a good hdr picture without custom tone mapping (via calibration with BT2390, hdr to sdr conversion, etc). You will probably get the best results setting the shield to 4k 59.97Hz output. This will prevent Hdr from working. So you will get 4k SDR. Use that with Natural color mode and you'll be in good shape.

After countless hours calibrating my 6040 and trying different tone curves I finally have a pretty good Hdr picture. However, depending on the content and how it was mastered, you will often see minimal benefit. Furthermore, without careful calibration you are more likely to worsen the picture quality compared to SDR.

Just got a Roku 4670, bought on Black Friday. I have it plugged into HDMI 1. The remote with headphone is a huge plus, took about 20 minutes to setup with several streaming apps. Input show I am streaming at 4K. I can walk around the house and listen to Pandora. Picture quality looks good with catv, all in all this projector is awesome. The detail on my 92" screen shows much more detail than on my 70" 4k tv. The helmets and jerseys last night on the nfl game was stunning. Looking forward to watching "Alita" in 4K next.

It didn’t work if it took that long. Mine was done quickly. At most a couple minutes.

Thanks
I have a Windows 10 HTPC set to 3840x2160 24 Hz I play Netflix via the Windows 10 Netflix app not browser get 4K with Atmos (and HDR where applicable if I enable it in Windows). There is no Amazon app for Windows 10 which is unfortunate. I watch Amazon 4K Atmos via Firetv. Luckily I watch way more Netflix streaming than Amazon. I don't believe there is yet anyway to get 4K Atmos from a HTPC with Disney+ which is unfortunate I hope it happens at some point.

BTW... having the projector connected to a PC I've been able to force a native resolution of 2128 x 1198 @ 60Hz (works in 3D too), but that was my limit, anything above that (in real active pixels) gives a "no signal" or black output.

Crappy cell phone pic, but I was finally able to get HDR to work with my Xbox One X last night. I watched a youtube video that went through the settings, and I had one wrong. I popped in Warcraft to give it a test and I had my first OMG moment in a long time. The details in this scene were unreal. Using Bright Cinema, Auto Bright and Image Enhancement 3.

Okay guys, straight from Epson (Dan). This is what FW 1.14 fixes:

#1 ...FIXES POWER RELATED ISSUES

#2 ...REDUCES ERRORS IN THE ROM OF THE MAIN BOARD (I have no idea what this means)

Hope that helps. I'm going to install mine tonight.

Seems like an important update. Anyone have a link? I can't find the firmware on Epson's site.

Ummm? When I bought my refurb it came with version 1.13 firmware and we were told they had already fixed the power issues?

This explanation may placate the novice/casual consumer but is insufficient information and ambiguous at best for most.

I have my HDR dialled in pretty good for movies but last night I was experimenting on PS4 Pro between 1080p HDR or 4k (no HDR) and I think I'm preferring 4K no HDR! Playing COD Modern Warfare last night was super sharp with really vivid colours/lighting - seemed to be a big step from 1080p and 4k enhancement. Anyone playing this way?
