Hi, having this problem of a pink cloud like blemish in the bottom of the image, only really visible against a white background. Lamp is at 2200 hours. Any idea what it could be ?

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply.
There are no other problems with the projector, no flickering etc. By high I assume you mean the lamp mode set to normal rather than low ?

Question New Sony VPL-HW45 is this noise normal ? Please help

Hi everyone,

I m quite new to this videoprojection setup and have just received a Sony vpl-hw45 with a fantastic image.

I am pretty disapointed though with the noise. The fan noise is OK but there is another noise or buzz that is audible anywhere in the room even if not very loud. It is kind of deal breaker for me so i need to know if mine is faulty or this is the "very quite" projector everyone is bragging about.

Please help because i got to make a decision whether i send it back or not.

I unfortunately can't post a link as this is my first post on the forum and i need to have 5 at least.

Thank you!
All the best

Welcome.

If you have a SPL meter take a measurement. There are free phone SPL meters also

I use the IOS App db meter

(And sometimes an old RS meter.)

Here's a few VW45 threads.

The SPL meter data will be more useful.

I have gone from the 45 to a VW285 and I KNOW my new PJ is louder than the 45 was. Once you take a measurement we should be able to tell if it's off base.

Well...

I went from VPH1271, to G70, to VW60, HW30, HW45, VW285ES.

The HW45 is excellent. I would say they perfected the 1080p PJ with the HW45.

The VW285 is more of a beginning of sorts. It's not Sony's first 4K PJ but it is early in the 4K models evolution. It doesn't have the right bandwidth to do 4K HDR at 60Hz without banding. If you keep it to 24 fps it's fine.

The VW285 is a bit louder. It's nearly louder in Low than the HW45 in HIGH. ... Or maybe it is. The noise of the VW285 bothers some people. My older CRT Fps had more fans and I adjusted to the louder VW285 pretty easily. I think it's still under 50db.

The Bulb in the VW285 is supposed to last a lot longer... I don't know about that ... time will tell.

There's a big bug with ATV4K and VW285ES HDR. This may be fixed soon by Sony (it has been fixed with the Laser based models a bit higher up on the product line.) Turning off HDR works and the HW45 isn't HDR so there's no real comparison there.

The VW285 is "REAL" native 4K so there's a lot more pixels. I would say the PQ is higher with every source. 3D I Think is much better on the VW285. I could never dial out the ghosting on the HW45. 3D was better on the HW30 actually.

@jjapp , that sounds like defective electronics. Could very well be the power supply. Definitely a warranty issue.

FYI My wife has laser hearing and can’t hear our projector in a 400 square for room 4 feet away from it. Even when I sit under it I would have to focus hard to hear it with a show on. My assumption would be there is a problem with it based on your account and my experience.

So regarding picture optimization : everyone seems to think film2 and ref are pretty great out of the box. I have the Disney WOW dvd, is it worth spending the time to run through it? I got tot the black level test and it didn’t need any tweaking- so I figured I’d ask if anyone has found it worth while to further optimize their settings. Thanks

Does anyone have 3D glasses sync issues? I am using my Samsung 3100gb glasses and several pairs loose sync during the film and take a lot of effort to re connect. Other pairs do not seem to remember the connecting and act like a first time setup. Anyone else have any issues?

i would use your WOW disk i used the speers disk and made some small adjustments contrast went down to 89 and brightness had to go to 52 or 53 i think ,so its worth the time if you like to tinker.

Would have to agree that Sony perfected 1080p with the 45.

As for noise, mine sits directly over head, like with 2.5ft of where my head is... you can definitely hear it but once the sound system is on even at modest volume the Sony’s noise disappears.

Hmmm, how would you describe the noise ? Air bliss or constant fan mecanical noise like the one i recorded ?

I have received a brand new unit and it has the same sound/noise. I don't get it, maybe i am very sensitive because of my work (sound engineer) ? Well actually my wife finds also the noise quite irritating.

Hmmm..

EDIT: Ok i have to be fair, the noise is slightly quieter. More acceptable but still noticable.

Mine is 4 feet above out heads and even on high lamp mode we'd have to stop talking and really try to hear it. On low lamp mode you can't even tell it's on even if you really listen for it.

When you recorded the sound of the projector how far away from the projector were you?

I think you must be very sensitive because even with the projector just above my head I can hear the bluray player spinning up when the sound system is off and it’s 3 meters away right below the screen.
