Hey Optoma pals - I've been running my UHD65 for a month or so now, and I'm torn on what video mode to use.

I started out in HDR, and I had that one as we watched the whole Harry Potter saga in 4k. Most of it was absolutely stunning, but I noticed there were some bright moments in the movies that were all washed out, too bright to really see what was going on. After I tried another movie (one that wasn't as 'dark' as HP) it really bothered me. I switched to Reference and have left it there since, but I can't help feeling i'm missing out by not using HDR.

What does everyone else use? Are there setting that make HDR a good option for all movies?

My room is 100% light controlled with no windows or anything to worry about as well.

Thanks Guys!

Also - somewhat unrelated - this is a shot I took with my phone at the beginning of Apollo 13 - it was just do damn clear. The projector was in reference for this.

Does the C13 update allow you to Game in HDR on the Game picture setting? Or does it automatically kick you in HDR setting? Thank you

Once it detects an HDR signal it sets the mode to HDR, you can't override it with "Game". So far I don't notice any major lag when playing in that mode when compared to Game though.

HDR is a mixed bag right now. 4K UHD movies with HDR vary in quality and intensity. Older films, 35mm; they tend to not looks so great with HDR. Newer films shot digitally; sometimes 2K DI; they tend to look better HDR treatments.

That being said; the level of HDR applied to the movie varies, was it mastered at 1000nits or higher? dolby vision goes 3000 nits and beyond; etc.

So since projectors can only handle so much HDR; and tonemap to the capability of the PJ; none of the 4K HDR projectors can do 1000nits. They are in the 200 or 300 nit range; and they tonemap.

You have uhd65; i have a uhd60. You can try HDR and see how the movie looks; some are ok, some aren't. 4K SDR honestly can look amazing on a uhd60 or 65; and you aren't missing anything. HDR will be fully realized with laser projectors with mega brightness, 10,000 lumens reaching 1000 nits i think is where we are aiming.

HarryPotter films, many were 35mm; some were 2kDI, but they are supremely DARK so on uhd60 they were just too dark . SDR worked just fine.

Transformers5:LastKnight 4k UHD 2kDI HDR looks absolutely AMAZING on uhd60; so the thing is depending on the film; your experience will vary.

star wars last jedi 4k UHD hdr looks atrocious, and it has a 4k DI! lol.

Besides the HDR level of contrast applied; a film's Dolby Atmos or DTS:X soundtrack mix can also vary in quality, good, bad, and soso.

Everything is subject to how well the movie is mastered visually and audio.

spare change on youtube does a good job reviewing the video and audio quality of all the recent releases.

I am joining the UHD65 owners ranks this week. It is my first projector. Any tips on what to do to get this bad boy up and running at its best?

HDR on lamp PJs is really I mixed bag... they don't have neither the contrast or the brightness needed...
On the Optoma, I found that both Cinema (calibrated) and reference mode, both with HDR enabled, are more precise and natural than the HDR mode... in the HDR mode colors are really unnatural and "blown away", Evan after a calibration attempt...

In Reference and Cinema colors are much more natural and I discovered that I can use Panasonic HDR Enhancer to increase perceived brightness using an advanced tone mapping...
Panasonic HCX chip of the UB420 and UB820 are much more effective for pj HDR than the HDR mode... and they works!

I also got an Oppo 203, a Sony x800 and a Cambridge Audio CXUHD... while on the OLED their image is pristine, on the PJ is really dark and dull... due to ineffective tone mapping...
So, when I use pj I'm forced to use the small and cheap UB420 instead of the Oppo 203...

The message is... invest in the right player and don't mess with pj HDR mode...

Troubleshooting my UHD60

I recently went to turn on my projector and heard a popping sound...sounds like a burnt out bulb. I got the solid red lights on the lamp and power button. I replaced the bulb and plugged in. When I turn projector on the power button turns to blue as it did before when it was working fine, but I have no picture coming from projector. Projector sits and runs but no light or picture comes from lens. Is there some sort of reset that needs done or is there more damage that could have been done?

A far as I know 3d functionality on the latest firmware is quite limited and doesn't include 3d blu-rays.
which firmware version do you have?

Mine is C13. UHD60 only support 3D when your device can output 1080p with 120hz. I'm using PC with Graphics card so that I can reach this requirement. The problem right now that 3D glass about 50/each. I don't want buy something that I cannot use.

Right... so 3d is not very useful when you watch a 3d BD from a Blu-Ray player... it could be more useful in gaming, I wouch...

In order to get game run smooth on 120hz is a challenger. You need GTX 1080ti SLI or GTX 2080ti hahhahaha

Has there ever been a fix to the 30-60 seconds it takes to "find a source" when trying to watch something? I am seriously sick and tired of looking at that box in the corner while it searches. I'm not using a hdmi switcher and all of my cables are monoprice [email protected], HDR, 18Gbps, 36AWG, YUV 4:4:4. Help!?!?!?!

Had this problem to with finding source on the uhd65 couple of things to try on Blu-ray player & receiver

make sure your hdmi link is set to off or in my case viera link was causing the problem and on the

projector make sure auto source is off . if your still having problems maybe try this and if it doesn't help return it https://www.amazon.ca/RUIPRO-Fiber-C.../dp/B06XGDFCSC

I recently added a Yamaha TSR-5810 receiver to my setup and it now finds source immediately. When my Xbox One X was connected directly it would spend it's time finding source even between games. Maybe the receiver simply holds the signal consistently while the Xbox changes output but I no longer have the source hunt delay. I didn't have this problem with my Epson projector, so maybe the UHD60 is just more sensitive to signal changes. I'm on firmware C13 and can confirm with direct Xbox to projector the signal hunt was not solved, only the addition of receiver in between them fixed it.

Curios is your receiver still in mode 2 default, if it is try mode 1 see if still finds the source fast
I noticed this on mine Yamaha 3060 when in mode 2 the hdmi cables I had worked perfect & found the source fast but when the receiver is in mode 1 it took so long to connect to the source had to replace the hdmi cable to a fiber optic hdmi cable who knows why

I'm noticing while watching HDR content my screen sometimes goes black for two seconds (I think it is losing sync). It happens maybe once an hour. I figure if the cable was an issue I wouldn't show an image to begin with. Any thoughts? It would be very difficult to replace the cable.

Unfortunately, you have hdmi hand shaking issue since you have 35 feet long cable.
Are you using a receiver? If so, what is its brand/model?

I'm not sure about your setup, but here is how I delt with my hand shaking issue.
I have UHD60 and Yamaha RX-A3070. Since I use both HDMI outputs, one for TV and other for PJ, I have to turn off TV output when I'm on PJ. When I'm on TV, I don't have to do so since cable for TV is short, about 3ft.
If you have the same setup or you leave both HDMI outputs on, you can try to turn off one that not use.

I’ve just disabled CEC and other related fractures. I only have it set to output to the projector. Very weird.

You may have to try another cable even though it could be difficult for you.
I'm using 40ft long Monoprice Cabernet.

Nope I set it to the Mode 1 so I could get 4K support. I used the supplied HDMI cable that came with my Xbox One X so it's pretty high quality. I'm using Dolby Atmos so I'm stuck with HDMI only, otherwise I'd still be hooked direct to the projector from my Xbox and probably still angry about source switching lol.

I just purchased the UHD65. I decided on this projector since I am really limited on space from my projector to the screen. I had exactly 12'1". That means the new Epson projector is out. It was down between the 51ALV and the 60/65. Even though the 51 would actually give me a bigger picture than 120", I decided that I would go with the bigger mirror assembly in the 65 vs the 51. My current set up was also 120" screen.

I am upgrading from an Epson 5025 that has been professionally calibrated. The difference in picture is absolutely stunning! Everything looks SO much better, from Hulu to Netflix to Blu-ray and the UHD HDR content is incredible!!! You really do not know what you are missing until you see it in your own room.

I also changed my screen from an Elunevision grey material, (I believe it was 1.4) to the Elite Aeon 4K white screen which is 1.1. I also got the backlight on the screen.

My walls are dark brown, so the backlight does not show up as well as what I saw at my brother's house with his screen on a light brown (almost white) wall.

I tried a back wall mount instead of the shelf I was using with my 5025. I was not impressed with the mount I found on Amazon, at all. I ended up using the shelf mount and placed the projector upside down on the shelf. The shelf mount also allowed me to push the projector all the way against the wall allowing the picture to completely fill the screen. This projector was harder to place than the Epson projector was. I had to measure the height and the distance on both the front and back walls to set up the projector correctly. I was able to get it perfect on the screen. Unfortunately I had 3 shelves on each side of the projector shelf that hold my DC/Marvel Statues and now the projector shelf is not centered between those shelves...I am sure I am going to have to move everything because my OCD will not allow me to keep it that way. Oh well.

I did read the entire thread, a few times and took some of the measurements others have used and I paid for the subscription to Projector Reviews. I used the recommendations from Projector Reviews. I still need to run the calibration disk. I need to do some reading in the manual to figure out how to align the grids.

I am so happy I made the jump over to the Optoma projector!
