Has anyone bought the UHD50 or the Benq ht2550 through Amazon? A friend of mine bought a couple of projectors recently and returned one he didn't like, and Amazon locked him from buying anything now. He has done this before, so maybe they are getting wise to people who are simply trying out projectors.

That's good to know. I recently returned a Sony pico projector to Amazon so I wonder if it's just because he bought two at the same time with the obvious motive of comparing them and returning one.

I just read an article on this in the Wall Street journal. Best Buy and amazon have hired a company, Retail Equation, to track and score customer’s shopping and return behavior. I was worrying as I just recently exchanged several UHd Blu-ray players as I couldn’t get one with the right features. :/

With retail stores disappearing, it's becoming harder to test drive expensive electronic gear, so online stores are going to see more of this in the future I think. Another friend of mine bought a few lenses from Amazon and returned both on different days. He got a nasty warning from them.

Interesting timing. NBC national news had a segment on returning merchandise last night 03/13/08.

I just checked Amazon for the HT2550, and it doesn't come up when searching. I had to go into my history to bring up the page for it. And when I do, it says that the projector is currently unavailable and don't know when or if it will be back in stock. Does anyone know what is going on with this projector?

Hey Smurfee! I searched yesterday and noticed the same thing. I pointed it out to a contact I have at BenQ yesterday and he said it is because they wanted to make sure Amazon had fresh stock of the Firmware 1.03 projectors. His words specifically were "For HT2550 at Amazon, we been working with Amazon to swap out all units in each of their fulfillment centers with the new v1.03 firmware units. I expect Amazon will have fresh units to sell again next Thursday or Friday" So hope that answers your question.

What's going on with this projector is that there was a firmware issue that affected the 3D synchronization and the projector randmonly turning off for some users. I haven't tested 3D content yet but haven't personally experienced the latter with my 1.00 projector.

I have put the projector through its paces and am genuinely and absolutely enamored with it. I went through a 1-2 month learning period to dial in the settings for my unique use case on my 160" screen but am loving it as my primary driver. If you have a want/need for 4k, I would put this on your short list. Happy to answer any and all questions you may have.

By the way, here is the product link for Amazon when it does become available so you can bookmark. https://www.amazon.com/BenQ-HT2550-P...ct_top?ie=UTF8

Thanks Scottyroo! I actually traded in an old Epson Moviemate for $300 through the BenQ store towards the 2550. I have a 125" screen ready to go. Hopefully by next weekend I'll be good to go.

Unfortunately there are several similar 4K projectors that don't allow user-upgradable firmware. The unit has to be sent back for a new firmware flash. I'm unclear why the manufacturers have this limitation. Personally I am reticent to mail back a projector just because it is fragile (the last time I needed service of a projector I drove 3 hours and put the unit in the tech's hands). So in my case, this firmware upgrade issue is a barrier to moving from 1080p to 4K.

I don't know if my panasonic ae8000u is user flashable or not -- I've never needed to so the subject has never come up. Perhaps a year from now it will be a non-issue with the present batch of 4K projectors also.

I wouldn't say that non-user upgradable firmware is a reason to holdout for 4k... at least for me personally. There is nothing specific about 4k that is associated with firmware being user upgradable or not. The Epson 4000 had a firmware update that I applied using their guide that went by fine.

At any rate, the new 1.03 Rev 1-01 HT2550s are being delivered to Amazon today. Look out for the listing this weekend. I just had my 1.03 Rev 1-01 HT2550 delivered yesterday and while I loved my v1.00 of, I will set up the 1.03 and report back any (if at all) differences.

This is really frustrating. Its the downside of retail right now. I talked to Best Buy when I tried to order my HT2550 and they said they charge a restocking fee only on projectors and one other type of item. Its because people are buying to use for an event and they are returning them after.

I get it, but we all know how hard it is to find one we really like. Fry's still has a no risk return policy but so many online companies and Best Buy is charging a 15% restocking fee. That's a hell of a chunk of change.

ProjectorPeople allow you to try it up to 4 hours and then you can return it for full return. Not sure if you have to pay shipping and insurance (they require it) but still. Hard to find the one you like.

I went through a UHD60 and then finally to a UHD65 because I couldn't get the 2550. That's a whole 'nother story.

That’s what I’m saying. Amazon ships in two days with prime and while BenQ doesn’t ship as fast they have no restock.

Questions

I currently own a Benq HT4050. I'm thinking seriously of purchasing the 2550- largely based on the comments I have read here and published reviews.
Will the 2550 have better contrast and brightness than the 4050? One thing that disappointed me about the 4050 was that watching a 3D movie was not a satisfying experience. It was not very bright.
Thanks

The brightness will be a bit more on the HT2550 with 2200 claimed lumens vs 2000 on the 4050. Contrast will be a bit better on the 4050 due to the chip the HT2550 uses.

One of the primary drivers for a purchase decision for the HT2550 has to be 4K, HDR, and color accuracy. There is a trade off to get 4K at this price point and that is primarily contrast.

However I have no complaints with my HT2550. It produces a beautiful image and I am always getting compliments about how amazing the picture looks on 4K content. I really don’t think about the entry level contrast anymore because of the true colors and sharp picture.

I just looked for this at Amazon, and I don't see it listed anywhere. Last time I saw on Amazon, it had 3 or 3.5 average rating. Might they have removed it for the bad vibes?

EDIT:
I had to Google it to find the listing. It's listed as "Currently Unavailable"?

EDIT:
Also unavailable on Benq site, and it appears on Best Buy as well (I get "Loading" for where the Cart button usually is). They all sold out?

Someone had posted that per their BenQ contact Amazon had temporarily pulled them to be replaced with the 1.03 firmware models that correct the 3D sync issue.

So an update on my new v1.03 firmware unit.

Focus is more uniform.

I have not tested the 3D synch yet.

One thing I have noticed is that out of the box colors on Vivid TV mode seem a bit more accurate.

HDR signals also seem to lock on quicker.

Remember my suggestion last week to change HDR Color Gamut settings manually to BT.709? It seems that is now the default setting. In fact, manually changing to BT.2020 Color Gamut doesn’t change anything on screen anymore. On my 1.00 unit on the same content it would default to the saturated and red heavy BT.2020 space. I was glad to see this change out of the box.

Overall very happy with the updated unit but then again I was loving the last unit as well. Glad to see BenQ is committed to working out the kinks.

OK--Great but would it be better to wait for the BenQ TK800 ? Is there going to be THAT much different in brightness? Right now have optoma 141x on a 92" Firehawk and black velvet curtains around screen, with a room darkening curtain on a southern exposure bay window. Seems about the right brightness. Really would like the UHZ65 but my wallet says just not yet ! Boy, it sure is a fun hobby.....

I know settings vary by room, but just to get a general idea, can you share the settings you are using?

You bet! Using my calibration tool, both the v1.00 and v1.03 projectors I have tested ended up with the same settings, so it seem that the "out of the box" consistency is pretty good for this unit. Interestingly, Sage also found the Brightness and Contrast settings to be the same in his calibration. The settings below will net you the most color accurate and brightest image possible on this projector. I love it.

Mode: Cinema
Brightness: 52
Contrast: 57
Sharpness: 3

Advanced Settings
Brilliant Color: On
Lamp Mode: Normal

Cinema Master
4K Pixel Enhancer: 2
Color Enhancer: 2
DCTI: On
DLTI: On

When HDR content is playing:
Color Gamut: BT.709
