I took a job offer in Valencia and we basically moved everything in our home to the new flat in Spain. I have no idea if the cause is the eventual tumbling and everything that happens while moving household goods but simply put, our 6040 also gave way last week. I simply wanted to know (given that I bought it in Belgium, another EU country) could I send it to the Madrid service that you mentioned or do I have to bring it back to Belgium?
the service centre in madrid will repair it.
It might or might not be covered under warranty, you will need to ask them on that.

This weekend my Mom was watching a movie and the projector hard powered off. I tried to switch cables and outlets to no avail.

I called Epson this morning and they are sending out a replacement.

I just wanted to echo my experience. I'm totally bummed out, but looking at the poll attached to this thread this outcome seemed almost inevitable.

How long have you had it? Number of hours of use?

too bad they aren't shipping 5050 as replacements. Good luck! Do they extend the warranty on the replacements?

That would be awesome but I highly doubt they are going to send a 5050 (If they do I'll let you know). In terms of a warranty extension on the refurb, I'm not sure maybe someone else could answer that question.

They absolutely SHOULD extend the warranty! Mine was purchased about the same time as yours and currently has about 900 hours on it. I hold my breath every time I power it on. I never would have had this many hours on it but if it's gonna fail I want it to happen before the warranty goes away.
Sorry for your luck, hope they send you a good one.

I was just about to buy one of these. Very troubling. A recall is in order if the failure rating is as high as the poll indicates.

If they haven't yet they probably won't and just transition to the 5050.

Too late for that. The 5040 will be discontinued soon.

I bought a refurb 5040ub from Epson.com yesterday for $1231 shipped. It was worth it for me to pull the trigger on this questionable unit at this price. Hopefully there will be no issues but I believe it does have the same warranty as new. Has anyone had a refurb fail on them?

If you read through this thread, you will see countless people have had refurbished 5040s fail on them.

I spent $61 when I bought mine at amazon to get an extended 4-year warranty through square trade. I figured that'd take care of the problem if I was unlucky.

The Epson 5050UB is out. I'm helping my dad with a new theater. He's kind of a tightwad, I'm trying to talk him into getting the 5050 instead of reduced price 5040s, partly due to this issue - the other due to the HDMI speed upgrade and better HDR in the 5050.

Anyone want to speculate on the likelihood this problem carried into the 5050? I'm going to bet that it's been fixed and won't carry forward - most of the failing units seemed to be purchased between May 2017 and Feb 2018... or refurbs.

I have a Sony HW55ES. I have had it repaired or replaced 4 times in 3 years due to bulb flicker problems. Never had a bulb last over 700 hours. Even with this last replacement, bulb is flickering at 500 hours. Once you get on the refurb train, I feel like manufacturers just recycle their crap over and over... not just Epson.

Even repairs can be suspect too though - my first was a repair - because the actual problem isn't always guaranteed to be the failing part - something bad in another part of the unit can be causing premature failure of another.

Rumor has it some retailer is sitting on a stockpile of refurb 5040s which will be released at not 1/3 off but nearly 2/3rds off! I'm guessing they were the ones people returned due to the faulty power supply mostly, but who knows?

Just checked the Citi CC that I used - they provide 2 additional years after the original manuf warranty expires with the same terms as the manuf warranty. So hopefully I should have 4 years of replacement warranty on my refurb. Who knows when nearing 4 years if a replacement is required they may send the 5050. If I get 4 years out of this PJ anyway I will be happy.

I used my Citi card as well. They cover 2 years after original manufacturer warranty expires OR 2 years after an extended third party warranty expires, to a max of 7 years. So in my case I have 7 years of warranty.

1. Two years from Epson
2. Four years of extended warranty from Mac Warranty, warranty kicks in after the original manufacturer warranty expires (cost $40)
3. 1 year from Citi after the Mac warranty expires

If for any reason I have issues with Mac warranty, I still have 2 years from Citi after Epson. Win, win.

5040ub failed

20 months of use and it failed
now nervous to get a replacement instead of them fixing up this one- if I get a refurbished one sent out, I'm not sure it'll have any upgraded psu, but I suppose if I send this one in to get fixed they may just use the same old parts that work for a while and then crap out...

By now they should have fixed the issue. Given that this seems to be the primary thing that is failing it is very likely that they are fixing units with upgraded parts.

It is likely a single component (probably a capacitor) that is failing which can just be upgraded to a higher voltage.

If anyone gets to the point where they aren't covered under warranty it would be nice to see a picture of an actual failed board. I bet it is more than 50% likely that there is a swelled capacitor on them that needs to be replaced.

Soldering is slightly harder these days for a novice due to the higher temperatures of lead free solder and tighter component spacing, and pervasiveness of surface mounted devices.

Most electronics failures are pretty obvious unless they are in a surface mounted logic chip like an AVR HDMI board failure... Most power supply boards are still pretty large and easy to deal with given that the passive components don't really scale down in size well.

If it is in the regulator side of the SMPS then it would be harder to deal with but a large percentage of SMPS failures are in the caps, and resistors.

I fixed a Marantz mm8003 that just had a pair of burned out resistors that I replaced with higher wattage ones.

Hi everyone,

Well I'm back almost two years later. With a broken power supply

Ordered on Feb 19, 2018 from Amazon. 5040UB. Date of failure: last Sunday. Worked great one evening, and the next time we fired up it, no signs of life, no lights anywhere. Good voltage at the power source.

It spent its entire life in one spot and was never moved or interrupted. Good airflow. Used once or twice a week so total hours were probably around 600 or so. Loved everything about it.

Epson is overnighting a refurb to me now. I asked and they're willing to extend my warranty for another year, since I'm just a few months away from the original 2-year warranty expiring.

Still no indication, on what is going wrong with the power supply?
I have just purchased a refurb one.
Hopefully, by the time my warranty will expire, I will be able to repair it myself.

My 5040 has the power board issue (Power light flashes and doesn't turn on. If it turns on it will die after a few minutes).

I opened it up to check for failed caps, but I don't see any signs of them on the two power boards. Any ideas what might need replacing?
