The only other review I've seen was at AVforums and that review stated much lower native contrast, about 1/3 actually.

Epson only states 2400 lumens as peak output.

My main beef with these PJs is their enormous size, hefty weight, and their poor lamp life.

Watched Kong: Skull Island in 3D and it was beautiful. Again, skin tones were perfect (and I’m very sensitive to incorrect skin tones)
Kept 3D level to 0 in order to avoid any ghosting.
Star Trek Discovery on Netflix 4K looked magnificent, particularly the space scenes of which there are many.
I’ve only watched Kong in 1080P but it is amazing with the 4K enhancement and image enhancement 4.

Poor lamp life?

Even if it only last 3000 hours at only £100 it’s still much cheaper than either the Sony or JVC

At 3000 hrs it'll be very dim and probably have 1/2 the new lamp output and lamp output will drop considerably well before then. I like the SmartEco/dynamic black option on DLP PJs where the lamp can be dimmed dynamically to extend it's life while still giving full output when needed.

I replaced my 5040 lamp with 2000 hours on it and yes the new lamp is brighter but not as much as I thought it would be, not a lot.

Agreed, less than a hundred notes for a lamp is an absolute bargain.
Just did a direct comparison between the HD and UHD versions of OBLIVION. I can confirm that the BD does indeed look better. The BD with 4K enhancement looked sharper, particularly distant vistas. The UHD looked soft by comparison.

I’ve seen quite a few JVC owners changing their bulbs at 1000hrs as maybe you are right but no matter how you look at it they are a fraction of the price of the others.

^The PJ being used is an Epson 9400/5050.^

Am I the only one that finds this troubling?

I'm with you. I'm pretty puzzled why this would be so. It was shot in 4k and 5k digital with a 2k digital intermediate ("DI"), which is pretty common these days. Very few films use a DI with > 2K resolution. It must have been a poor transfer, which is a real shame for such a stunning film...

Not all 4K releases are created equal. Even the DTS-HD audio on the Oblivion Bluray has more punch than the Atmos on the 4K.

Sold my last JVC projector in July 2018. I've waited on the Epson 5050ub ever since. I'm ready to get my hands on this projector. My Spidey Sense tells me there's something going on for them to release the European version months ago and continue to postpone the US release.

I can't remember any other projector manufacturer dragging their feet this long for a new model with incremental upgrades to be released.

I have a Sony HW30es, so I am waiting for this one too. Fighting with myself though because of the issues that continue with 5040 and supporting them. Worried, this comes out at $2999 and then question this versus jumping to up Sony true 4k or continue to wait. I am not getting any younger!

ya , i agree. It's been available in Europe for over 2 months now. Plus i keep agonizing over Epson's unsealed light path, and dust blobs. I can't believe they still haven't addressed this issue over all these years. I remember about 10 years ago , and the same dust blob b.s. swayed me to buy another brand. Now i'm ready for an upgrade, and this Epson seems to tick all the right boxes. BUT, the dust bunnies are pushing me away again. Go figure...

The person I responded to made a posting like FI with 4K isn't technically feasible at a reasonable price. I was pointing out the JVC models that compete with the 5040/5050 have it.

Agreed 100%, although I usually watch it with the isolated score (Dolby TrueHD) as I have a major hardon for the soundtrack. When upscaled to 7.1.4 the score is totally mesmerising.

LCD panels are transmissible so air must pass over them to cool them. Both DLP and LCOS are reflective and can be cooled by heat sinks so no air needs to passed over the optics. Too make sure the air is dust free in very difficult thus more prone to dust blobs.

I've owned an Epson 6010, 5030 and currently 5040 no dust blobs in any of them, no air cleaner in the house and I'm not the best house cleaner. The Epsons have been the only TV in the house so they get a lot of hours put on them...

Wow! So I just looked that projector up and it literally does everything I’ve been wanting in a projector. Native 4K, 4K 60Hz HDR, FI w/ 4K, DLP 3D with no ghosting. DLP sharpness. What the heck?!?!? What’s the catch?? I’m assuming probably lower contrast than the 5040 and upcoming 5050 and maybe not overly bright HDR?? Anyone in here have any experience with this projector? Maybe I should stop wanting and wishing for the 5050 and look into the BenQ

FYI, it has "true" 4k (pixel shifting), not native 4k.

Ok gotcha. I was thinking it was native like the Optoma.

You forgot to mention 4K24hz content being natively handled at 24 hz. It isn’t a 3:2 pulldown that has plagued some DLP projectors. Some crafty cooking being done in the BenQ labs.

Black levels are finally respectable for a DLP... not something that could have been said about last years DLP crop.

I have done a full review of the BenQ on YouTube. Just search HT3550.

I think (know) you’ll get better blacks on the 5050. Color brightness will be better. Input slightly better (33ms vs 55ms).

Overall I’ve been impressed it it. Highly recommend but I am still anticipating the first hands on reviews to see what the 5050 can do

Optoma is not native. BenQ is not native. Sony is the only “Native” but at the tune of $5k.

BenQ is using a next gen TI chip that removes last year’s light border issue. It’s a 1080x4 shifter which produces 8.3 million on screen pixels as opposed to the 4.15M of the 5050. YMMV if you can tell a different from normal seating distance though. This has been debated thoroughly and I don’t want to derail convo here.

What’s the catch?? I’m assuming probably lower contrast than the 5040 and upcoming 5050 and maybe not overly bright HDR?? Anyone in here have any experience with this projector? Maybe I should stop wanting and wishing for the 5050 and look into the BenQ
I was considering the HT5550 but as improved as the black levels may be it'll still be nowhere near the 5050UB.
