Lightbulb LUNE 4K HDR setup and RGB + Gamma settings

Hello Everyone

I received my LUNE 4K yesterday and tested a lot (thanks for the comments inside the thread, it helped a lot)
The control menu of the LUNE 4K is very confusing and complex, but you can find the most important picture settings and it is also possible to play HDR via external players, without any quality restrictions.

I try to give an overview about the fundamental settings and issues I faced if the wrong settings were choosen.
I have no picture wall yet so the images are based on LUNE 4K which was projecting on an uneven, yellowish wall

My Setup:
Zidoo Z9X HDMI OUT --> Denon X1500H --> LUNE 4K HDMI 2 IN/ARC

Zidoo Settings (as an example of other devices):

Due to the setup it was needed to adjust the audio delay slightly

The delay was between 25ms and 50ms... I used 25ms setting to solve it.

LUNE 4K basic settings:

In the LUNE 4k there are four different setting menus for the color settings.
The basic settings can be adjusted inside the "quick-menu".
Therefore you should select your favourite input port of the LUNE (in my case the hdmi2).
The connected source need to be active, otherwise you are not able to open the LUNE setting.

Press SHORT time the setting button of your remote

Now you need to go one step back and enter the first menu and change your settings if you like to.
I prefered to deactivate all enhancers. I kept the standard color, due my screen not arrived yet.

If you like to adjust the colors of the LUNE 4K more precise, you need to use the hidden menus of the device.
Please do pictures of the default settings before you touch them! If you change the following settings, they maybe not reset within factory reset!!! All changes are made at your own risk!

LUNE 4K advanced color settings:

Go to settings and select the "about" menu

The factory setting menu should appear (black backround color)
It seems to be the basic menu for the major adjustment of the device because test patterns are included and the voltage power of the RGB sentivity can be fine adjusted.
If you like to have a look for it...

Go to the following item and enter it:

Under calibration data menu you will find the default settings of your device. You can do a picture of it if you need a fall back later on.

Well done, Sengaya. Best post I've read in a long time.

The ability to access these low level setting will elevate the Lune4K into the elite class. Lune's main deficiency is its HDR/HLG performance, and dealing with SDR/BT2020 signal. Looking forward to read how this can be improved.

Looks like it's time to pick up another unit.

How does this compare to the Xiaomi MIJIA 4k UST? Was originally going to a put a preorder in for Benq HT3550 put my mounting options may be limited and may require a shorter throw for a 120" screen. Was hoping either the Xgimi or Xiaomi would be a viable alternative.

I asked Taobao store just now, they said the only difference is the brightness, everything else is the same. It is also black in colour obviously. see attached table they sent me.

Query if the extra brightness justified the premium (about USD$1500 more than Lune4K).

Of course I would see this the same day I ordered the Lune 4K. Although at +$1500, I'm not too upset. Interestingly, that is the first spec sheet I've seen that specifically says it covers 100% of the DCI-P3 gamut. If true, the Lune 4K has a one-up on all other UST models on the market.

assuming the spec sheet is truthful. Hopefully you can share how you like the projector! I am shopping for a projector in a similar price range

Just joining this thread as I am basically having a close eye on UST 4k projectors currently, with the new Xiaomi Mija 4k being my favorite. However, the Xiaomi / Vava4k are quoted to be having 102ms of input lag - can anyone advice on (or has anyone ever measured) the input lag on the Xgimi Lune (Pro?), besides from this 15ms number that has never been confirmed?

Hi

i installed my screen now.
I was able to setup the colors and white balance as discribed before.
Ill give you some impressions about the gamut via calman results later today. I check if it possible to measure P3 too.

About the delay... the lip sync delay was between 25-50ms. Do you have any idea how to measure the inputLag overall? If yes, I would be able to measure it for you i guess.

Well the site I ordered it from canceled my order. I knew the price was too good to be true. I’ve had one hell of a time trying to purchase this projector. Since February, I’ve made 3-4 attempts on various websites to order and every time there was an issue, whether CC not accepted, orders canceled, etc. No one wants me to have this projector! Guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Suggestion for non-ALR screen

After sitting in the store for 10 months, the XY screen is finally mounted on a ikea stand for testing.
Here are some initial observations:

1. It's quite useless for daytime use. Someone has commented on the chinese forums that the ability of the horizontal lenticular structure of XY screen to reject light coming from the side is limited. The circular Fresnel type screen would be more effective.

2. Sharpness appears to have suffered a bit.

3. The first image projected look a bit aggressive, with hint of sparkles.

4. SD colour seems to have suffered a bit.

5. Getting a decent HDR image requires the contrast to be cranked up and brightness lowered, resulting in clipped whites and crushed blacks, perhaps also due to the limited dynamic range of the LUNE. Blue also needs to be cranked up and green reduced. ATM this is a process by trial and error due to lack of calibration tools, and appears to be content dependent. It's time to mess with the factory setting menu.

6. Using the x700 to force the Lune to operate in bt2020 mode appears to obtain better results for bt709 contents. Attached are some of these pseudo bt2020 screenshots.

7. Would like to try out a normal screen to be used in dark surrounding. Any suggestions? White/grey/silver? Gain?

Just updated firmware, glad that it has fixed the movie play back lip sync problem, and now offers English language in the setup manual.

Anyone tried the new Pro model, is it worth the premium over the standard 4K model?

If you place the Lune on the floor, the 120" projected image will be about 45cm from the ground. Using a platform with 4 adjustable feet will make the process of alignment much simpler.
XYscreen assembly is quite straight forward. Detail instruction can be found on youtube.
Have fun.

More on XYscreen

1. While a lot has been written about the XPRx4 chipset's ability to resolve fine details, it's apparently not the case here. The screen seems to make matter worse. A test pic is attached for anyone who may be interested.

2. Screen brightness also takes a bit hit. Actual measured screen gain of just 0.5 for these lenticular type screens has been posted on some chinese internet forums. For night time viewing, a normal white/grey screen may be a better option. The attached HDR screen shot is taken with default setting.

Youtube 4K HDR

1. Although YoutubeTV installed successfully after first adding the framework and play services, playback would hanged after a couple seconds. This could be due to lack of support for Opus audio format. It also defaulted to selecting bt709 format instead of HDR.

2. Smart Youtube TV fared slightly better. The default audio format is MP4, but failed to reproduce the colour of v92 format correctly.

So for now, an external device is needed for Youtube 4K HDR playback. Attached are some screen caps of HLG clips using the UB820.

I have been using Smart YouTube TV which I am happy with due to the convenience and the only downside is no HDR (colour is washed out). The 4K SDR output is already decent enough for me cause it is only YouTube videos not UHD movies.

4K HDR contents on youtube has much higher bit rate that other streaming services. Quality is good, but getting the colour to be displayed correctly has been a challenge on the lune4k, and I suspect other chinese made devices as well. The opus audio format is also not supported. It's not clear if these issues are Android TV related, or specific only to these devices. Interested to know if anyone has been able to get around these.

You could try updating the firmware to see if the setup menu appears.
Otherwise, if your unit understands chinese, the voice command "投影方式" will bring up the mounting options.

Thank you for answer. My Lune seller from Russia helped me also by almost same command.
It can be helpful in that case because in the latest firmware function of rotating screen is disappears from menu:

Go to Google Translate on your phone or computer.
Put "detect language automatically."
Enter: 进入投影方式
Hold the microphone button on the projector remote control for a couple of seconds.
After triggering the projector Chinese “Siri”, play this phrase from Google Translate.
The projector enters the flip and mirror projection mode.

Youtube vp92 HDR

The Lune4k fails to reproduce the colour of youtube vp92 hdr video properly. Here a comparison between bt209 and ARIB STD-B67.
