Thanks all for the suggestions on the 4K Blu-Ray Player. It sounds like I'll need to go down the MadVR rabbit hole when I rebuild my HTPC with UHD Blu-Ray.

I've been really happy with the HT3550 I got a couple weeks ago (just doing 4K HDR content via Roku Ultra currently). It's a May 2019 manufactured date and Rev 01-101. I upgraded the firmware to the new 1.0.1.

I don't have any CA issues that I can tell but I'm not on the far end on zoom and still projecting directly onto a wall (until I complete my screen install hopefully this weekend).

IMO it doesn’t change the fact that the 86 is a standout product at it’s price point. Context is important here and it’s something that is lacking in wirecutter’s ‘best for most folks’ format. Unfortunately, it’s that kind of format that scares people off from projectors— it did me for years. I was under the impression that you either had to spend thousands and thousands of dollars or simply settle.
JVC NX-9 MSRP = $17,999 usd
JVC NX-7 MSRP = $7,999 usd
JVC NX-5 MSRP = $5,999 usd

The old RS-540/x790 is a better deal for most people, and I generally agree that comparing this projector to a JVC is kind of silly given the price differential.

I screwed up and said NX9 and not NX5. Good catch.

My keystone was on by default, and I never noticed it change by its self. I manually aligned the projector so it was nearly perfect anyway, but even when it is a bit off and I disable/enable auto keystone, it doesn't do anything. So not sure if it's broken, or it just doesn't work when it's fairly close to being aligned.

I have started to notice faults with my W2700 now. I never used to get the split screen issue, but over the past 8 days or so I've started to get it. It would only happen for 2-3 seconds while the resolution changed and then it would be fine. I also started to get a longer black screen when shows were starting on NF and also Blu-rays on the Sony X700. Then a couple of days later, the black screen would then flicker with a green/blue colour cast. Is this what others have experienced? I've also noticed the screen going black a couple of times when about 2 minutes into a show on NF. This is random and doesn't happen all the time. When I stop the show and play it again, it doesn't happen, so I can't intentionally reproduce it. I have updated the firmware to 01-101 and so far the green/blue colour cast has stopped, but the black screen still remains. The only thing I have changed hardware wise was to swap over my HDMI cable from Out Sub to Out Main on my Onkyo TX-NR636, and to upgrade to a full 4K 60Hz HDMI cable to go from the X700 to the receiver. I wouldn't have thought that a better HDMI cable would make things worse.

Also, when I'm watching Sky, the edges of people and objects distort/pixelate with random black parts when there is motion above a certain speed. The firmware update didn't fix it. Again, this could be down to the HDMI cable or using the other HDMI port on the receiver. I'm going to try and use the old basic cheapo cable again to see if it's that or not. I'll put the cable back into Sub Out and see if that fixes it as well. I've got until the 24th of this month if I want to send it back for a replacement or a refund, but I'm wary that if I get a replacement it'll be worse. I'll decide over the next few days after some more testing.

Cheers,
Barry

So had this projector for few days, and playing 4k hdr content looks amazing, but as soon as it goes into non HDR content where it needs to use the cinema preset, it gets very dull, like image is not bright enough

Also i keep reading that you need to mount this projector above your screen.. but i got this mount: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 that allows me to point the projector to where i want.. is this bad?

How much will it help this projector if i painted my room black (walls and ceilings) instead of the current white color?

Hi I thought about a portable floor rising projector but I have another option. This is not my first projector or projector screen. Tell me if this is a good idea or bad?

I could order just the screen material and make my own screen! The problem is it would need to be lightweight. Less than 4 lb. Mainly because I would want to hang it up on the wall maybe upside down big maybe. Depending on where the black part is for the no screen is. Then use command strips to connect it to the wall without holes.

Then when I don't want it out roll it up like a big tube all the way to my ceiling in the media room. Then when I need it roll it back down.

The problem is what is the best projector screen material to buy ?

Really? I’ve had 2 in the past 2 weeks. (one exchange). Strange. They said it would take up to 2 weeks for each one and they both arrived within a few days.

Can't comment on the quality of your mount, but make sure that the projector lens (and the case of the projector) is level with the top edge of your projected image / screen or slightly above it.

Already a black frame around the image tricks your brain into thinking to be seeing more contrast, if the surrounding walls and the ceiling (otherwise image reflection!) are black you increase this positive aspect (but for other purposes of daily life your room will feel much smaller!). Make certain you use a matt paint (!!!), otherwise the reflections of the projected image could drive you crazy.

UPDATE: Read the original review and found my answer. 3D doesn't work in 4K mode. Totally forgot about that. Switching my Firestick to 1080p made it work. Guess I'll be using Plex on the Xbox to view ripped 3D, and keeping my Fire TV stick in 4K.

My 3550 came in from B&H yesterday. I've been testing it out before replacing my old Vivitek projector on the projector mount.
I put some 3D bluray rips on a USB drive, and they displayed correctly once I manually put the Benq into 3D SBS mode.
I then attached the USB drive to my LG UBK90 bluray player and could play the video (side-by-side), but it would not go into 3D mode when I tried switching it like I did before.

I used to play my ripped 3D blurays via Plex on my old sony 3d bluray player, but this LG doesn't have a Plex app.

I could play the ripped 3D blurays on my old Viewsonic (manually putting it in 3D mode) through the LG player's usb port, but it doesn't seem to work with the Benq.

Can anyone provide insight into this? Am I out of luck trying to play my ripped 3D Blurays with this combination of Benq and LG?

Also, my old projector would work on SBS 3D files played through Plex on a Fire TV Stick, no luck with the Benq.

What screen sizes and gain is everyone using with this projector? I was wanting to go with this projector, but after looking at projector centrals calculator i'm having doubts it's going to be bright enough.
The screen i'm looking at using is going to be 165" and a gain of 1 in a totally light controlled basement. PC's calculator is saying it's not going to be bright enough.

Permit me to advise 165 is in fact too much for this projector..

Huge, Bright Image
Accurate color, great features
Low Cost

Choose two

I got a 135" screen and would say it's just about right. Feels noticeably bigger than a friend's 120" I was also initially considering, but without losing too much light. Dark scenes in various movies are still very visible, I mostly leave it on +1 HDR brightness and use HDR10 source material. Cinema mode for youtube/netflix also looks good. Kinda usable during the day but barely, but that's only because my room is completely not blacked out, might fix that eventually.

Theater guy at our new home just sent this picture of our final product! Excited to get our blackout blinds in and to finally see this thing in action! He said he had no problem installing and had no issues testing the projector out. Can’t wait to see the picture in the light controlled room!

Finally got a proper screen. I'm experiencing a lot of flickering with dynamic iris on. I'm on the latest firmware, and I've tried low, medium, and high settings. I've tried switching to normal mode, doesn't make a difference. It's very distracting. Doesn't seem to be happening with DI off, but things just don't look as good. Is this normal? Seems like there's no point in using DI if it's the case.

edit: seems like there's still flickering with DI off. Just not as often.

edit2: okay, definitely a DI issue. Been testing with every combination of settings. As soon as I turn on DI the flickering starts.

To you guys who came from a 1080p dlp and upgraded to the BenQ W2700 / HT3550

1080p blu-rays how do they look upscaled compared to native 1080p ?
1080p upscaling is very important to me because i have a lot of 1080p blu-rays and im not seeing my self buying a lot of UHD blu rays(only the ones i watch over and over is going to be bought on UHD)

What im sure of is that i wont be able to see any screen door from where im sitting
what i fear though is that the picture with 1080p blu-ray upscaling could produce a softer image than my Benq w1070 delivers
Please tell me im wrong

Also do you notice better blacks compared to the older generations of DLP`s

Thanks for answers in advance

I watched a few regular blu rays on mine and they all looked great. Oblivion looked especially crisp and good. Think I have the pixel enhancer 4k on 8 for watching 1080p content.
Definitely better than on my ht2050.

is BenQ still issuing hardware revisions on this model? Just wondering when this will be safe to buy after they've worked all the bugs out.

Thank you for the quick answer, helps a lot with deciding what to go for

BenQ W2700 / HT3550 should be a perfect swap as it has just about the same throw distance as my Benq W1070
I was looking at the Sony HW45es and the HT5550 but they cant fill my 135 screen in my room because they need a longer throw distance than which i dont have

The Benq w1070 still looks stunning now and then believe it or not but after i recently got glasses i can now see some minor screen door
which is hard to unsee it once you see it
i have a 135" screen and im sitting 11-12 feet away

Did you notice any improvements in contrast and the blacks department coming from the ht2050

Thanks

No problem!
There is definitely an improvement in blacks/contrast compared to the ht2050 but it's not mind blowing.
The biggest improvement to my eyes would be the hdr and the tone mapping, along with the clarity/resolution.
Watching hdr YouTube videos etc it really feels like you're watching a giant hdr capable tv.
My screen is only 106" but my room is(if need be) probably 95% light controlled even during the day.

Still like 3d in a PJ but I use 3D MVC, most of my 3D MVC files work OK with my Himedia Q10 Pro from NAS, switched automatically most of times, sorry, can't tell about SBS nor Plex as I don't use them

After having done more testing with cables, etc. I think I'm going to have to send it back for a replacement. Hopefully the replacement will be better. My current one is experiencing more faults as the days go by. Last night I noticed that the screen would go blank and I couldn't hear any audio either. This lasted for about 6-8 seconds, and happened 3 times within 26 minutes. Rewinding the film and playing the missed part again was fine, but this is not great, and it hasn't done this before. Has anyone else had the same thing start to happen? I've been using this 10m HDMI cable https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and I'm not sure if it's too long or not. When connected directly to my Sony X700, it plays films immediately, but when I try and go back to the main screen to see the apps (NF, YouTube, etc), it keeps saying no signal. When I connect it through my Onkyo 636 it works fine. My Onkyo doesn't support HDR, so I would prefer to connect the X700 directly to the W2700, and have the audio go through the receiver, as the picture is much better when connecting it directly to the X700.

Can anyone recommend a decent HDMI cable that is around 8-9m? I really don't need the 10m as I have roughly 1.5m looped up behind the receiver. It's just disappointing to have these faults, as the picture quality can be fantastic.

Cheers,
Barry

Barry, I was having HDMI issues, particularly with my Sony UBP-X800 blu-ray player. Dish network and other sources came through ok though. For reference, I was using this 35' cable with claimed to support 4k at 60hz etc... but clearly was at its limit. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I finally bit the bullet and replaced it with a fiber optic HDMI cable. I wish I had done this sooner, all my sources come through crystal clear now, with no flickering. This is the cable I purchased: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It's 50' long which is longer than I needed, but works flawlessly. They have shorter versions, but for whatever reason, the 50' is less money than some of their shorter versions.

Good luck.

Seems like there's no point in using DI if it's the case.

edit: seems like there's still flickering with DI off. Just not as often.

edit2: okay, definitely a DI issue. Been testing with every combination of settings. As soon as I turn on DI the flickering starts.
I cannot understand how this iris works. When I watch Alien or BR2049 (4K), I find that the iris works a lot, but with 2001 Space Odyssey, it does virtually nothing even set to High setting. What explains that?
