One of the main aspects of the 3550 was that it claimed to have the new improved TI DMD that mostly eliminated the light border (current 02-103 builds appear to have the much smaller border).

I am speculating that many of the early units had the larger light border and people are simply not aware, or maybe something is being done on the refurbished units that BenQ has not commented on (perhaps using the older DMD since they are the same size).

The refurbished 3550's seem to be 'different' from what they should be (based upon what we are discovering here).

How big should the light border by relative to image size? I have got a 92" screen and I'd estimate that the border is around 1" on all sides. It is certainly well inside the black 'edging' on my screen.

I thought that was ok, but the advert from BenQ says:

"The W2700 projector is equipped with the new 4K DMD chip from Texas Instruments. This new chip ensures a 50% thinner light grey border, that used to be visible with the first generation 4K DLP projectors. The light grey border is now the same as on all other existing projectors and therefor barely visible. Furthermore, the space where the light grey border used to be is now filled with the projected image, meaning you get around 20% more screen surface than before."

I couldn't quite work that out, because my old 1080p had no border at all as far as I remember.

You have the newer TI DMD with the smaller light border, the older DMD/light engine would have a 3-4 inch border at that screen size.

WCG half screen

Hi,

I have this projector (and love it!!!). I sometimes get the half screen issue that Samfield and ccanthony posted about, where the screen is slightly brighter on one half than the other in WCG mode. If I cycle WCG mode on and off then it resolves itself.

Is that “normal” for the projector? Is it just connected to 4K content and to be expected? If so, I will just keep cycling through the WCG mode to resolve it. Or, should I be contacting Benq to have it replaced? Is it a faulty machine?

Apologies for the post but this thread is huge and I have been searching for over an hour and can’t find an answer! Sorry if someone has already posted an answer to this!

Thanks!

It is “normal” in the sense that it’s a known issue. In theory the most recent firmware solved this particular issue. If you’re on the latest firmware and are still experiencing the error than I’d say you could contact benQ or, honestly, if it’s not bothersome you could wait. This model has a three year warranty.

Firmware 1.0.2 did not solve the half screen issue for every unit, I had a unit that was on 1.0.2 and it had severe half screen issues (did it constantly).

The unit was fine for the first ~6 hours or so and then...

I also had the half screen issue after upgrading to 1.0.2.

I actually just got my unit back from BenQ after doing an RMA and I noticed it right after turning the projector on and going in to the menu. Thankfully haven't noticed it since then. Very intermittent for me and I also find it happening even with WCG off. Toggling brilliant color on/off seems to fix it sometimes.

Projector seems to be running ok otherwise. BenQ did not give me a different unit. I'm not sure exactly what they did though as nobody at BenQ communicated with me after they repaired it. It just showed up on my doorstep.

Quick question to anyone who upgraded from BenQ W1070 projector to 3550 - how is the brightness and contrast compared to 1070? Is it about the same, better etc?

Hi wk11793,

Sorry for my confusion but can you just clarify, did you notice the half screen issues continued AFTER Benq had done something to it following the RMA and then sent it back to you? Meaning that, whatever they did, it hasn’t resolved the half screen issue.

Or were you having the issues, sent it back to Benq and have now just received it back with everything looking good? Meaning Benq have “fixed” the half screen issue.

Sorry! Just want to make sure I understand it correctly! Thank you!

I had it quite frequently before doing the RMA. After BenQ repaired it and sent it back to me I only noticed it once when I went into the menu after first turning on the unit. I have not experienced it again in my testing this weekend. I will update if it happens again.

I should clarify too the main reason I sent it back was due to issues with flickering. I mentioned the half screen issue in the RMA but it was not my top concern.

It was from Amazon and after they lied to me over and over I returned it.

My latest (third) sample came directly from BenQ (02-103 build with 1.0.2 firmware out of the box).

So it seems like this projector is good if you get the right one...but it's not a bad idea to wait a bit longer to order this it seems.

I got lucky and my projector from amazon hasn’t had any issues

No clue on the % since most of the time people with issues will complain and those without won’t say anything, so the ratio of complaints will seem higher in the thread than it really is. That said, there seem to be more issues posted here for this projector than there were for the 1070 so it’s probably not an inconsequential % of users having issues.

Luckily there is a 3-year warranty and this is still the best 4K projector under $3k+ so its worth taking a chance on it unless you want to spend the big bucks on your projector.

“Than the first generation 4K DLP projectors.”

Your 1070 was a 1080p projector so didn’t have a border.

Texas Instrument’s earlier 4K chips had a large border; the ht3550 has their newest 4K chip with a much smaller border.

Contrast is much better on ht3550 than my 1070.

I haven’t noticed a change in brightness going from 1070 to ht3550 on a 150” screen in a no-light room. It’s very possible it is dimmer, but it’s definitely not too dim, so I didn’t look for relative differences because it’s bright enough so that’s all that matters to me.

Is that observation with our without the color filter in place? I think both the 1070 and the 3550 are both rated to 2k lumens.

I use the color filter

But again I didn’t compare, I just haven’t noticed a dimmer picture than I had before.

My 1070 was 5-6 years old tho so a brand new 1070 may be brighter than ht3550, dunno

hi guys owned this projector for just under a month I'm a previous w1070 owner and this is my 4th projector
my thoughts on the w2700/ht3550
lense is softer than any of my other projectors and takes a bit of effort to get in focus but seems fine when u hit the sweet spot
c/a not an issue but I have screen set to max size and it def makes a difference can see it if I wind the zoom down to smallest size
light border about a inch on a 100 inch image loads smaller than w1070
my manufacture date is July and its rev 2 /103
input lag im a big gamer but don't play online and the lag is totally fine 4 me playing adventure/driving/and rpg games
half screen I'm getting half screen quite a lot don't seem to get it much in HDR but in sdr it can be quite annoying happened 4 times wile watching a movie the other day either switching brilliant colour on off or wig fixes
my biggest issue with this projector is in HDR the colours seem way off peoples faces are bright red and sometimes red objects can look almost radioactive with a lot of detail being clipped also a lot of detail gets clipped in white I have HDR brightness set to zero if I turn contrast down to 30 and red gain in the colour temp down to 70 it just about fixes these issues but the picture looks totally washed out and loses all its pop has anyone else experienced these issues
many thanks

Going from the W1070 to the HT3550 using a lower gain screen I find the brightness is fine. Maybe somewhat dimmer than the W1070 but still bright enough to produce a nice image with plenty of pop. That said, I do find eco with WCG a little too dim and 3D is unusable unless I crank the contrast up to about 70.

I also wish we had a calibrated HDR Cinema and HDR D.Cinema mode since I think the WCG filter produces enough of a shift in colors that it really needs its own set of adjustments. I feel like HDR with WCG off pushes reds, maybe to compensate for the blue tint with the filter.

Lag is around 50ms, as is the same for other DLP 4K upscalers.
It depends what type of games, ones that require a very quick response time might require something more responsive.

If you are using a PC the 3550 can do 1080p @ 120Hz (which will reduce the input lag from the ~50ms that it has at 4K 60Hz).
