Curious why the intro date is a moving target? I prefer they introduce a fully baked product (new firmware and so on) and could deal with my existing projector if I had to. I can sense some of you are more itching to get going on this and I can't blame you.

It’s not a moving target. BenQ has not officially announced pricing or availability. What is happening is a few vendors goofed and now everyone is confused.

February 25 is the official announcement date. Will have official pricing and, with any luck, availability on that date.

You’ll probably get more money selling it here on the marketplace.

Regards the whole release date thing - A few retailers in the UK at least, posted the projector with pricing (but NO delivery date!) I jumped in as one of them offered what I considered to be an absolute bargain price to secure my order at said price.

At least one other forum member has done the same for the same reasons but there has been no official release date or projected delivery quoted (at least in the UK)
One vendor suggested 21 days lead time but that is just a suggestion, not a promise.

I want this yesterday but am more concerned that I secured the pre order … as for the Projector - it will be here when it is here!

If anyone here isn't ready to spend $1500+ on the HT3550, I'll be selling my HT2550 with about 1000 hours on it when this comes out.

Right now, my itch is more the Reviews. The initial impressions from sage and scott have been promising.

I will definitely let you know once the time comes. I currently only have around 20-30 hours on it. I will probably have a little more by the time this comes out if I purchase it, but probably not many more. I'm embarrassed to say that my Panasonic AE500U that I replaced with the HT2050a had less than 500 hours on it over the period of about 13+ years. I don't watch TV on it. Just movies. Me and a group of other HT fans would take turns watching movies at each other's houses. Then I hit a very long spell where I just didn't have time and would go more than a year between watching a movie on it. If I ever have another house, I will have a PJ in a Family Room that gets used more. I have my office in the basement, and the rest of the family doesn't typically come down here, so the HT room has sort of become forgotten. I'm trying to change that with the upgrades to the room I made late last year (including the HT2050A).

Anyone notice about no matter 3LCD or DLP in HDR mode, picture gets washout? New threads of JVC N5/7/9 came up this result . However, I still believe BENQ equipped D.I would solve this disadvantage a bit when in HDR mode.
Scooty, according to your testing, do you think D.I actually improve black level in HDR mode?

I am sorry if this has been covered to some extent before but appreciate your input on the following:

1. If you had a choice between a Blu Ray player that does native processing / scaling (or an HTPC with madvr for example), would you choose that or turn off all local processing (some sort of pass through) and let the 3550 do HDR etc.? Same with SDR to HDR scaling. Look for your thoughts on that. Forgive me if my terminology is not up to snuff as I am learning more about 4k, HDR, HDMI, HDCP etc. than I ever knew before.

2. I have a dark basement with full light control should I need it. For a 120" or 133" screen that I have my eyes on, what would be ideal? I will mostly watch Netflix, movies (DVD, UHD etc.) but I also surf the web quite a bit on my projector through HTPC (forum like this, youtube etc.) and may even watch some TV. I like the silver ticket and it's in my price range. Go with grey, matt white etc.? Also 16:9 because 3550 is 16:9 based? I look for your thoughts, thank you.

I haven't any experience with 4K, so I'll have to let others answer #1 and Scotty and Sage answer the screen specifics about the 3550. I have a 120" Silver Ticket White for my BenQ HT2050a and it does well. That's what I'll be using if I go with the 3550.

I did want to just address one thing, just in case you believe the same thing I thought for years. My room is in a basement with no windows and a door. I used to say it was completely light controlled. For years, I had a very dim Panasonic on a smaller 100" screen from a DIY Blackout Cloth. When I went to the brighter BenQ and larger screen, I realized what "Light Control" really meant. I had so much light reflecting off my screen (even though the room is pitch dark with nothing on) to the side walls, it was distracting and washing out the picture. My ceiling was painted black and I had my walls a medium gray. AFter learning "Light Control" means controlling all light, even reflections off the screen, I added Velvet in areas to tame those reflections. It was like having a new PJ

Thanks Tony, good point. I intend to address the reflection issues. My walls are muddy grey while my ceilings are white. I have some convincing to do at home to make it more "light controlled".

So I've decided to start upgrading gear in anticipation of purchasing the 3350. Anybody have any good recommendations for HDMI cables? I'll be replacing an old 30' run currently installed for my 1070. It runs from my receiver into the wall and up to above the ceiling and down to the projector. I'll also need a couple of short cables for my 4K BD player and my nVidia Shield TV, which both are less than a foot from my receiver. I've read horror stories about 4K issues and long HDMI runs so any experience is appreciated. Thanks.

@sage11x , @scottyroo ,

Are you guys not allowed to release your reviews until the 25th, after the official announcement? Can you let us know if that's the case, it kind of coincides with the way the timing is panning out. Thanks.

I don't have experience, but had a few recommend the optical cables at monoprice:
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=21568.

Contemplating picking up a 30ft in anticipation and to see if I can see a difference over the standard cable I have with my JVC.

Here's a thread on it.
https://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-di...dmi.html?amp=1

Anyone read up on super MHL? Seems like it could make hdmi go the way of the dodo bird.

Thanks. Gonna give the Monoprice cable a go. Seems to have passed all the tests in the test reports thread.

I bought the 50ft Ruipro 18.2Gbps cable last year - works very well between the Onkyo TX676 and the W1700. Use Xbox One X as primary 4K source.

This is my assumption, since we've not heard anything of importance for a very long time. I'm wondering if sage or scottyroo have found something very bad they reported to BenQ, which is why there is so much silence. Sage did say he's waiting for a FW upgrade, so maybe it's over a big problem found that needs fixed for them to continue and finish their review. Or maybe they are just busy with life

conspiracy theories, come on now. Either way, I assume it's the latter (or at least hope).

By the way, any thoughts on my earlier query on the type of player that could pair with this projector?

Scooty, according to your testing, do you think D.I actually improve black level in HDR mode?
In my testing, Dynamic Iris has a pronounced affect on black level performance. I have noticed that the picture itself not only have better black levels overall (letterbox, night skies), but local black level performance is also better (dark hair, shadows) while not making the overall picture dimmer. What I've mentioned this before but what BenQ is doing here is dynamically balancing and tone mapping the entire image based on total light output coming from the aperture. So instead of a over dim HDR image with DI on, the image itself is actually perceived as brighter due to the increased contrast and black levels. Price point aside, its a phenomenal HDR and Dynamic Iris implementation for a projector.

We can launch our reviews when we would like. No review embargo and no 'major issue'. The firmware upgrade is mentioned simply because we want to to test the process of upgrading the firmware itself.

Here's my take. I am working hard on putting the most objective review of this projector possible. The most important piece of info we don't "officially" have that gives relevance and context to the ENTIRE review price. BenQ hasn't officially released that. Since price point is the lens (no pun) through which the entire review is viewed from, you are not going to see any reviewer publish until that is official from BenQ. And the release date. That too

BenQ is announcing on Monday. We will go from there, but for now I will echo Sage's sentiment that in my testing, the HT3550 has proved to be a phenomenal piece of kit... especially for its soon to be announced price

Thank you, that is reassuring to say the least. It’s very responsible of you guys to wait for price so your review can have proper context. BTW feel free to post comparison pictures or videos and thanks again.
