Agree with both Sage n DunMunro, I watched again. It seems the details varies from scene to scene . At least, it confirms the picture quality of W5700 are very close to LCOS, which are double or even 3 times the price of BenQ.

I am loving the picture on my HT5550. This is why I am afraid to go with an AT Acoustically Transparent screen. I dont want to lose that sharpness or even the gain of a 1.1 or 1.2 screen...

Came down to Epson 5050 vs. Benq 5550 for me. Drew up this here comparison of the advantages of each to help me decide. Might be some fun smarky remarks from the peanut gallery on this one.

Pros

Epson
rating frequency score

Better blacks 3 * 2 = 6
better contrast 2 5 10
electronic zoom and shift and memory 1 1 1
better lag 3 1 3
brightness 2 10 20
quieter 9 10 90
remote 2 1 2

total 132

Benq

better resolution/sharpness 5 10 50
color 5 10 50
auto hdr 1 5 5
better 3d 3 2 5
already calibrated 3 10 30
cheaper 3 1 3
3:2 pulldown on Epson? 0
motion 6 10 60
smaller and black 1 1 1
brighter p3 color 5 3 15

total 219

Edit: Well the columns didn't display as they do in the message box but hopefully you get the gist.

So Jrunr, did you get a unit with the new TI/Iris firmware already in place, and just waiting on the user firmware for the three-stage iris setting? Or will it still have to be sent in for service updates?

Question Dilemma

I have been following this thread for a while and was about to order the W5700 (2700 EUR), until I just found a deal on a demo JVC RS-440 for 2600EUR with only 60 lamp hours.
Can't find any existing discussions for this PJ comparing it to a JVC RS-440 (aka JVC DLA-X5900). Do you have any thoughts or experiences on this?

My HT5550 is now using 250hrs. I finally got HDR PATTERN to perform further measurement. With HDR PATTERNS, I got color measurement result same as original measurement as above. The biggest different is to set the contrast to 43-44 and the brightness to 57-59 to get best picture result. And the brightness got final result to 50 nits which same as my anticipation of it's brightness ability. And the contrast goes to 1400:1 DI on.

For those who wants to get good picture quality result of 4K HDR can just use D.Cinema mode, Gamma 2.3, Light: normal, brilliant color: on and try my contrast and brightness setting. Also let me know your comments

If I am using a 92” 16x9 with 1.3 gain, n sitting 12ft. away in a room with blackout drapes, should I be using the lower figures of your Contrast n Brightness ? Thanks

If you don't have same screen gain of mine (gain 1.0), or HDR PATTERN, you could try this scene to adjust your contrast and brightness in D.Cinema HDR mode.

Hi Jimchao,

Thanks for your input. I did input your settings into the ‘D. Cinema’ mode of my unit. However, when I played a HDR disc, the Picture mode automatically locked on HDR mode n no indication it’s on D. cinema mode. Also, I cannot select it since the Colour Mode column is whiteout. Wonder what did I do wrong.

If you put the HDR Disc in and turn off HDR in the projector menu (Default is Auto) you can then select D. Cinema mode and any other mode for that matter.

All modes setting can be set before playing. You can still adjust Brightness and Contrast while HDR locked.
I tried 1080p in D. Cinema mode/WCG "ON" would not effect the 4K HDR brightness and contrast settings, which means 2K and 4K can be set in different brightness and contrast.

H5550 will auto detect HDR signal and will auto-lock in D. Cinema Mode.

Hi jimchao,

I just turned HDR from Auto to Off. Now I can input your settings into D. Cinema mode. However, when I started playing a 4K HDR disc, I selected D. Cinema but HDR cannot be detected until I switched the HDR function back to Auto.
Hope you don’t mind to tell me what did I do wrong. Is it the sequence ?

I'm confused as to what the scenarios are for when someone would want to use the D. Cinema mode. Is it closer to the rec.709 color space than the Cinema setting? My understanding is that HDR content is rec.2020, which would invoke the HDR picture mode unless you manually turned it off, which seems like it would defeat the purpose of watching HDR content.

So would D. Cinema be appropriate when watching non-HDR 4k content?

So would D. Cinema be appropriate when watching non-HDR 4k content?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer...

D Cinema is the factory calibrated picture mode which, ideally, is recommended for use in a fully light controlled environment with standard dynamic range content when picture quality/color accuracy is the priority. Doesn’t matter if it’s HD or 4K or whether it takes advantage of a larger color space or not as long as it’s SDR.

Diablo I know you know this next part but for anyone reading along who doesn’t..

Projectors aren’t really capable of HDR. To display HDR the projector needs to tone map the content to something the projector can display. It is impossible, currently, for any projector to display HDR natively without some additional tone and gamut mapping (to avoid clipping). Honestly, HDR is a flat screen thing and none of those designing these HDR ‘standards’ have given any thought to how it would work on a projector. Because of this, the quality of a manufacturers tone mapping is maybe one of the most important things to consider when shopping for a 4K projector as this can be a make or break issue regardless of the underlying picture quality of the projector. BenQ does a really awesome job here with their HDR Pro tone map. The resulting HDR picture isn’t necessarily strictly accurate— because no projector can display HDR ‘accurately’— but it’s a good facsimile and does so with few compromises (IMO).

One more note: the UHD spec packages everything in a BT2020 ‘container’ but I’m not aware of any content that actually uses the Bt2020 colorspace— maybe someone can chime in here if I’m wrong or if they know of any material. As far as I know almost everything coming out today is either DCI-P3 or Rec.709.

@sage11x ,

While you are on the subject of Tone-mapping, I hope u can give me some advice. I am using a Panasonic UB820 player, should I turn on the HDR Optomizer of it ? Wonder if this will interfere the HDR Pro inside the W5700 ?

I've been looking at potentially upgrading my projector screen from 110" to 135". The projector is mounted about 14 feet from the screen, and my seating position is around 10.5 ft away. My concern is whether or not there will be enough fL (since in reality, the picture modes I'd be leveraging are around 800-1000 lumens based on what I've read in reviews).

I seem to recall @scottyroo saying he had a 135" screen and it was plenty bright, but I couldn't recall or find mention of it.

It looks like you're right, I found it referenced in his signature. If it wasn't too dim on that, I don't think the 135" will be a problem.

Switching it to off will have the options but metadata is stripped, and the mode changes to REC709 instead of REC2020.

It sort of defeat the purpose of having 4K HDR , it’s more of 4k SDR when one takes this route

Tone mapping is also disabled

I went with a brightness of 47 and HDR brightness +1, didn’t touch contrast as that affects how tone mapping is done on the BenQ, I’ll be fiddling again with brightness 45 and HDR brightness at 0

Otherwise white is clipping on higher nits material , even setting the HDR brightness to -2

Just got my firmware updated, so far so good, we had to send it back to BenQ for the updates

Not really, here is the calibrated targets for grayscale using chromapure

Above 55% tone mapping takes over

I focused on white balance and CMS, left contrast at the default 50

Some pics post calibration on 135” 1.1 gain AT screen

Very nice pics.
Would be nice if more owners who has updated their projector could tell us about the performance.
Perhaps even some measurements of contrast with different DI settings and perhaps color volume. Some reviewers claims that in HDR with WCG filter on the projector still don't come close to DCI-P3.

It's only available through their reseller partners like BHPhoto and BenqDirect. I think it's because their target audience with this is professional installers. Conversely, the HT3550 is aimed more to the average consumer, so it's more widely available. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, though.

I Do not think this is a good move if Benq think like that because on amazon some Projector cost 30.000$ from sony and people buy them with no problem at all i hope in the future we will see the HT5550 on amazon
