Thank our for the great info on the 5550! I previously had an Optoma HD-81 that was incredibly unreliable. Switched to a Runco LS3 with short throw lens since 2012. It’s been rock solid. Unfortunately, we moved and new HT room is one foot shorter which means my 100” wide 2:39 screen/Panamorph anamorphic setup is not being filled.

Now I’m hoping an HT5550 will work for an 11’ish throw, but still not clear on its anamorphic modes via new firmware. Also, this projector does not support Dolbyvision, correct? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

It almost appears as if Germany (or Europe) is getting B-class units with projection lenses that are inferior to those of the HT5550.
I used quite a bit of shift and didn't see any reduction in sharpness and I was projecting 150" diagonal.

It does not support DolbyVision. No projector does at this point. It does support HDR10.

For those still wondering about the current state of firmware, from Benq support:

"Any HT5550 shipped after July 23rd will have 1.0.1. If you don’t have that version of the firmware, you have to ship it to us so we can apply it for you.

In the future we are hoping they will be user serviceable, but this update is not."

It was stated earlier that once you had 1.0.1, firmware became user upgradeable but this reply states otherwise.

I just received my projector back from BenQ and can confirm the firmware version is 1.0.1.

I do have the iris settings of low/medium/high. Is there anything else I should be testing? Haven't had much time to notice anything significant.

There are some who want to know if there is now Anamorphic support.

Any recommendations on a screen? My wall can just fit a 120" 16:9, will have very good light control, we will sit 14' away at the most, and will be mounting probably right above us. ( we could possibly move the couch ahead 1-2' if needed) Budget wise I would like to make the most out of the projector, I'm thinking around $500 or less. It can be fixed or manual, not worried about electric really. Any help?
I can't help with a fabric screen but I've had great success with just painting the wall with a grey projection paint:

For Anamorphic, can you check the Aspect Ratio menu settings that are available (I think under "Installation"). Are there options similar to "Anamorphic 16:9" and "Anamorphic 2.40". If so, display a letter-boxed scope movie, select "Anamorphic 2.40", and verify the image is stretched vertically top to bottom, retaining the same width. A 16:9 image (such as a movie's selection menu) will squeeze horizontally if "Anamorphic 16:9" is selected.

Funny one. The benq isn't a 4K chip set either fyi.

It does indeed have anamorphic options. I haven't tried them in a movie but it does stretch the screen vertically.

I watched an HDR movie tonight and I'm convinced that the updates to firmware made a huge difference with DI. I had it set to High and only noticed it a couple times.

Prior to the update I noticed it ALL the time. The best way to describe it is it seems to engage and adjust much quicker than the launch fw.

Can someone explain this to me please. I am wanting to do a silver ticket 125" 2.35:1 screen so really the epson 5050 is my best option. What does this update do? Is this only for a anamorphic lense? Do you still have to manually adjust the picture for widescreen movies and TV watching?

Thanks

I received my projector back last week and have watched it a bit this weekend. I sent it in for the dynamic iris grinding/rattling noise. It is now silent and there is no additional noise to the actual iris sound. I am very happy of having this fixed. I also had the firmware updated and can concur that the iris is faster in high mode and I have only noticed it a few times. I haven't bothered with middle or low since I am getting great results with high.

I had the HT2050 in it's place for a about a week while I was waiting on the repair. I can tell you that now going back to the HT5550 is a significant upgrade. Sharper and the colors are punchier/more vibrant and the blacks are deeper with dynamic iris. The fan noise is better too. On the HT2050 it was a higher pitch hum which was distracting to me. The HT5550 is near silent in its operation and fan noise even in normal mode. The default Cinema Rec 709 measured fairly accurate for the primary and secondary colors but the grayscale was a bit off from d6500K. I calibrated my own mode to for a tad better picture; grayscale, color management, gamma at 2.4 but measured close to 2.2, etc... using a SpyderX meter with Chromapure. I also calibrated the HDR10 mode and liked HDR brightness at -2. I am using the wide color gamut turned on. I don't notice a drop in lumens although there is one when I measure the light output. I can hit D3 green and blue but red is inbetween Rec 709 and D3 color space. Before the repair I could hit a deeper red but not quite the green. I think some additional internals may have been changed or the firmware did some improvements to the color space.... Overall I'm very happy with the image.

You will need an anamorphic lens if using a scope screen. I would recommend going with the Epson 5050 since it has lens memory. Everything on the Benq is manual.

That stinks after what they told me. I'm close to ordering myself. I just now moaned at them... (via email)

UPDATE:

Their response

"That one may have slipped through the cracks. Most of our projectors will have that update. If something ships without it, they just need to let us know and we can apply it for free."

Thanks. That's my luck. I reached out to support and they're doing an RMA. Was hoping to have a bit of a showing over Labor Day, but probably won't be able to at this point.

Feel for you on that Darth, this really should be something they could and should avoid. I too almost placed an order this morning what with the new firmware available - your post stopped me for the moment. Please keep us posted on your experience, hopefully you actually see your original, new unit, returned as updated.

Has anyone received an HT5550 direct from BenQ with the 1.0.1 update already in place? Seems everyone may still be receiving units requiring them to be sent back.

Their support team has been very responsive. They said that it shouldn't have happened and sent me an overnight label within a matter of minutes after talking to them.

Sounds like mine was the exception instead of the rule, but until someone else can confirm I can't really say otherwise though.

Yeah, we really need some confirmation on this. I'm somewhat skeptical when it comes to customer service/support statements in general. My question would be aren't they pulling units requiring updates from stock and updating them first? Additionally, these units frequently go "Out of stock" on their site, what the heck are they replacing them with? I note too that they charge for expedited shipping for those that want to receive the unit sooner - little good that does if you're required to ship it back when you receive it.

At least they moved quickly for you on the return - keep us updated.

One would think it would behoove them to update before shipping so as not to have to pay a round of overnight shipping charges. Looks like I may be the next guinea pig, I'm about to order...

UPDATE: Placed my order. It said I got the 'last' one. Hopefully not the last non-updated one lol. I called and asked them to notate the order with my request for pre updated firmware.

I placed on order yesterday morning, was shipped in the afternoon and should arrive on Friday and will be able to see what firmware version it has installed. Will probably turn on and check what firmware is installed before installing on the ceiling.

The unit was received, updated and shipped yesterday... except it was shipped back by ground. From CA to PA, which means I won't get it until next Tuesday. I'm pretty disappointed it wasn't shipped faster considering it was the company mess up and I won't get to use my projector during the long weekend, but at least it'll be right when it gets back to me eventually.

@DarthSN I understand your disappointment considering your particular 'slipped through the cracks' situation. Not too surprised though.

Update...So I jumped on board. Placed my order early yesterday morning (Tuesday - just before @vidwiz ) for a listed "In stock" unit, and was told by BenQ customer service rep that the projector would be shipped with firmware 1.0.1 - let's see what happens. Shipping is ground. No shipping notification yet (Wed morning - still flagged "Order Processing"). If others could relate their shipping experience(s) too...

I decided to advance my purchase based on; 1) threat of the tariff increase that has been mentioned on this thread and, 2) the 30-day refund policy. I don't think I would be willing to pay any more than current MSRP for this projector. I have the option to consider other projectors (JVC, Epson) now or in the future. And if the unit doesn't come with latest firmware like I was told, I'll consider a refund and readdress projector options later. But like I said, I'll see what happens.

Update...Well that didn't take long with my projector order. After a lengthy conversation with a BenQ rep (since my order still hadn't shipped), it was determined by their third party, post-order, fraud processing service that 1) they didn't recognize my email address domain and 2) the web order IP address (VPN) was physically too far from the billing address. Forget the shipping and billing address was the same and credit card approved the purchase. As a result, they wouldn't accept the order, it would be cancelled and a refund would be issued in 3-5 days. I was told if I wanted to reorder over the phone that should be no problem. I wonder if placing an order while on vacation would also be turned down.

So I asked how many units were in stock - twenty six. "Could I be assured I would receive a unit with the latest firmware 1.0.1?" It was indicated they don't pull units at the warehouse for updating, and that the technical group was located elsewhere. If I were to receive an older unit, they would be happy to overnight both directions for me. I was informed it was a minor update anyway. ("I'm somewhat skeptical when it comes to customer service/support statements in general.")

I declined to place another order. I'm gonna sit back a while now and see what others experience with these stocked units, and what new products might be introduced in the coming months from various manufacturers. I imagine that sometime in the future (could be now for all I know) all units will come updated.

I had the same mixup with my order and it being flagged as phony. Only reason I found out quickly was because I called to ask for "latest update requested" to be added to my order. I did re-order over the ph. A positive is that I went with the cheap shipping but it will still only take 2 days to me. I dont have much confidence in it arriving updated however...
