BenQ HT3550 True 4K Home Cinema Projector Review

I am about to set mine up and would love to have a good starting point.

Thank you.

D. Cinema mode for non-HDR is already factory calibrated. Just ensure Brilliant Color is turned OFF and most find 4K pixel enhancer best around 6

For HDR, make sure wide color gamut is ON and Brilliant Color is OFF.

You don’t need to play around with color hues and gammas etc on this projector. Just ensure you use D Cinema for non-hdr and the four main settings are always correct:

Wide color gamut: ON
Brilliant Color: OFF
4K pixel enhancer: set to taste, likely 6-8
Sharpness: set to taste, likely halfway or lower

Oh and Dynamic Iris to taste: likely HIGH in a light controlled room

It's a velvet curtain, was just an example on how eliminating reflections would help with black level.
You don't have do it that way.
Just some dark paint and some curtains on the side. A dark rug on the floor. The HT3550 would also benefit from this.

Here is a discussion of someone trying to treat their room with paint/fabrics:

Power on

Okay, I switched from the HT1075 to the HT3550. My HT1075 came on whenever I powered on my receiver, but the HT3550 does not. I just upgraded to the latest firmware but still doesn't do it. Any ideas?

There is a 12v trigger but I’ve never used it; there is a menu setting to enable it if that’s what you are using.

I just turn it on with the BenQ remote each day but I use Alexa for everything else in the theater (lights and receiver) so if there is a way to Alexa power this projector by using receiver or another device, that’d be cool.

Should I be worried about buying a used BenQ HT3550? Any issues with these projectors?

Harmony Remote/Hub. Could always get the basic one for $60 give or take and use your existing remotes to do things while you're using the system and just use Alexa to turn on and off. Just never turn things on or off without using Alexa or the harmony remote or you'll throw it off the next time.

There were quite a few QC issues at launch but many of those issues have been ironed out with fwupdates. Are you buying used or refurbished?

What to do if you find yourself stuck with no hope of rescue:
Consider yourself lucky that life has been good to you so far. Alternatively, if life hasn't been good to you so far, which given your present circumstances seems to be more likely, consider yourself lucky that it won't be troubling you much longer...

Used. Anything I need to look out for? What is the latest firmware?

1.0.5. FYI the firmware is user upgradeable.

Known issues early on (that were not fixable via firmware and required a visit to BenQ for service) a ‘half screen’ issue where the color filter seemingly fails to fully engage and so each half of the image looks slightly different. There was also an improvement to the dynamic iris to make it less noticeable in operation— early models were prone to a high degree of pumping/flickering. While all dynamic iris solutions will result in some pumping, BenQ has all but sorted this out and new modes have much better iris implementation.

I have blueriggers 50FT HDMI cables that I bought years ago for my 3D w1070 projector. Do I have to replace those cables to support 4K? Or will they work just fine?

Best would be to just try it first. Generally, for 4K, at 60 frames per second, with HDR, you should get 18 Gbit/s "Premium High Speed HDMI Cable".
However, you can lower the required bandwidth by not using HDR, or lower resolution or fps.

When I got HT3550, for a few days I was using just some regular 32ft cable just fine, by lowering the fps to 30 on menus and 24 on movies.. Then I got fancy 18 Gbit/s 65ft optical cable for ceiling mounting the PJ. You can newer go wrong with those, bu they are a bit pricier.

Is there some video test i do to see if the cables are not working? That can provide me the bitrate at which the video is running at?

Just connect it to PC and try different combinations of resolution/fps/hdr. If you get no image at all or dropouts, lower some of those three.

Note that it depends on each link in PC -> AVR -> PJ. Some may have better/worse/sensitive hardware in their HDMI ports and [email protected] may work on one TV but not on the other. (If you do not have the PJ yet)

re-reading that, I didn't really answered your question.
When you get working combination, you can quesstimate the required bandwidth for example from tables here

What are the best picture settings? Anyone posted the best setting for this projector. I know it varies from room to room. But would like somewhere to start.

I recently received my HT3550, and the other day I noticed little red 'pixels' in the bottom centre of the image (very bottom). I was pondering a return, but now they are gone (or have turned white and therefore harder to see)

Has anyone ever encountered this before?

Hi ,
Please help me choosing Sony Hw45es and BENQ HT3550. I am really confused because I found both with similar price and warranty. 1050 USD . Hw45es is 1080p and ht3550 is 4k. But i heard sony at 1080p is better than most 4k.
