The JVC camp convinced me! Ordered the JVC NX5 (includes free replacement bulb - part of current JVC offer), a Silver Ticket 135" Screen (1.1 Gain), the XPAND 3D Glasses & 3D Emitter.

Everything all in rounded up to $4800.

Considering the True (Native 4K), the great deal on the Projector, the free bulb, the new & higher gain screen then the one I have, I think it just made sense and came out to be a rather good deal. Will be getting everything in within the next 4 days. Will start setting up next week!

Thanks all who contributed. I'll definitely post back with reviews, photos and experience.

Hi, i went over whole thread. Did not see if anybody had a chance to do a direct comparison between ht5500 and epson 5050. I probably will go 5050 way as i see it on Amazon and benq is not there, but, still, have anybody had a chance to compare one with another, 3d and hdr modes specifically? I come from epson 3700, 100" screen, light controlled room.

I really like nx5, saw it in the salon, but cannot justify spending that much atm. 5050 will probably be just fine for me, but i got curious about factual comparison with benq, but, cannot find anybody who had done that first hand.

I know Scotty roo is working on a 5050 vs 5500 comparison in his theater, using a 160 inch screen. I think at the moment with that large of a screen he preferred the 5500 for the fact it has 8 million pixels vs the 5050 having 4 million pixels. But I think if you use a smaller screen and sit around the same distance as he does (16 feet if I remember correct) you may not need the extra pixels. For a 120 inch screen you sit around 9 feet to take full advantage of 4K. 17.5 feet takes full advantage of 1080p so epson 5050 is somewhere in the middle. He did say the blacks are better and it’s brighter as well so for contrast epson for true 4K benq. You also get better input lag on the epson about 3 times faster input. As well as fancy lens shift and lens memory. Epson would have a perfect projector if only it had done 4x pixel shift instead of 2x.

Will be interested in your thoughts between the 5050 and 790. I was down to these two projectors and when the 5050 was released and I was still on the wait list for the 790 with no guarantee I would get one I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the 5050.

As far as I know they can’t— one of the technical limitations of LCD is it’s relatively slow pixel response time. My guess is that to get a true 4K 3LCD pixel shifter they’d need to design a ‘half 4K’ 3LCD chip and perform a 2X chip just like the .66 equipped DLPs (UHD60/65 and BenQ HT9060).

If possible could somebody PM me a vendor that has a good price on the JVC x790r. After reading this and some other threads I’m heavily considering it over the epson since I don’t need the extra brightness. I’m in the Pittsburgh area in case that matters for the vendor option.

Native 4K is coming very soon on their LS model though price will be probably 10 grand.

I assume there was a pretty large premium to jump to the NX-5?

Thanks,

If I had inquired about this first prior to my purchase I would have an NX-5 as we speak. The difference was much more palatable than I had ever thought possible. But if I’m going to jump to the next level I would go for an NX-7 and it was more money than I would want to spend right now. If I wasn’t treated so well by my rep at Magnolia I probably would have returned the unit. I’m just not that kind of guy and the Epson does deliver a fantastic image.

Right now the 5040ub might be the best bang for your buck out there.
Am I wrong???
This is very interesting, they also have refurb once in awhile for $1150, which is incredible.

How much better is the 5050UB? is it worth the $1k hike in price? I don't mind if it's only 10% less bright, since the 5040UB is already very bright.

I'm interested in this as well. The cheapest I've seen on ebay is $4k. If there are refurbed/used options would be great too

After much consternation and researching, I ended up going in on a slightly used Sony VPL-VW695ES (150 hrs on the bulb). My hope is that it will perform somewhere between the JVC X790 and the NX7, and exceed the capabilities of the Epson 5050UB, Benq HT5550 and JVC NX5.

I received and installed the X790. I then used Tom Norten's settings and found the SDR picture to be really good. On some material it looks to me like I would have a tough time between seeing the difference between a 5550 4K and the 790 4K resolution. I can also see an improvement over the 5050 in black/contrast.

The HDR is another challenge. It looks like the complexities we have all read about of matching source and projector are very real. I'm a little flustered with trying to get the right look. I'm thinking I'm going to rely on a good calibrator to get it dialed in and set up so that I have only a couple of parameters to modify when HDR material is watched.

One conclusion I have reached is that after installing two V2 .47 DLPs and the 5050, the X790 has the best potential to be the closest to 4k satisfaction.

Is the JVC X790R pixel shifting at 1080 x2 (like the epson) or x4 (like the benq)?
