8500ub finally died. Need replacement suggestions
I have an epson 8500ub that’s about 9 years old. Last operation I heard a grinding sound thought it was a fan, replaced all fans an now no power. Going to replace but not sure what will provide a comparable picture quality for sports, gaming and movies. My throw distance is 18 foot from ceiling mount. My AVR does not support 4K so that’s not a necessity.

18' throw is a long distance to an average size screen but need to know the screen size for an accurate suggestion. Generally the 4000/5000/6000 series of Epson's have very similar throw/shift range. The 3000 series are less but still have a decent range. The refurbished 5040 is the best bargain right now if you can find one. A refurbished 5030 should be as good or better then your current 8500. The Sony 45es is a very good 1080p projector if you prefer new but again check throw as it is a little less then the 8500. JVC is also a more expensive option. Nothing other then Epson, Sony or JVC will have the contrast of your current Epson.

Unless you get a bigger screen that eliminates the Sony 45es and the Epson 3000 series. Only the Epson 4000/5000/6000 or JVC will work.

With the long throw distance, take a look at the Epson refurb website for the 5040, which may be absolutely the best deal going.

Otherwise, the Epson 4010 may give a similar image to the 8030, but the Epson 5050 is the direct upgrade model. The 8030 was top of the line when it came out, and Epson's 5050 is pretty much the one to go to for direct upgrade, new, with a full warranty.

The Epson 5040 will be refurbished, but the best deal going, and with a decent warranty.

Thank you for the responses. I’m refreshing on the clearance page for the 5040ub as I agree with that bang for buck it’s the best option. Just waiting for them to come back in stock.

Oh, and the iris on your 8500 likely is what was grinding and finally seized up causing the projector to fail. This was a common issue with that particular era of projectors. It doesn't cost at ton to fix it, but it is definitely about time to go the upgrade route.

5040ub came back in stock, ordered and should be here within a week! Hate I missed the $99 bulb sale. Thanks for the advice looking forward to the better picture quality and image speed processing.

As someone who has the 8500, the 9700 and the 6020 models I have to say that with the auto iris off I really haven't seen any real difference in overall picture quality or sharpness between the various UB models. (I keep the iris off because I tend to notice the extra noise and lumen shift when it is in use). I have wondered if they used the same LCD panels in all of those UB projectors with the contrast differences being attributed to improvements in the auto-iris system from one generation to the next.

That said, the refurb 5040 is a great projector for the price you are getting it and since that series projector's bulbs tend to run longer than the ones in the 8500 series did you'll probably have 3000-5000 hours on the bulb that it ships with before needing another one.
