I don't know if the picture is fine with the other content if the issue is with the projector.

What is the source, equipment, cable provider and channel?

Have you tried youtube content with the same type of content that is causing the issue, i.e. 1080p not i?

What mode does the projector change to (in the corner) when watching 1080i?

Can you set your tuner output to 720P and retest? It's probably got to do with the interaction of the 1080i refresh rate with the on-board TK850 processor.

@noob00224 Given this is a direct replacement of a w1070 that never had this issue I dont see how it can be anything but the projector.

The channels vary, cbs (golf), sportsnet and tsn. The carrier is Bell Fibe. In between is an Anthem 720. Benq had me bypass the avr when troubleshooting and it made no difference.

I will give YouTube a shot when i have a chance. I will also try running 720P.

1920 x 1080 @ 60 is what I see when changing to the Bell box.

Thanks for your time!

@DunMunro I cannot reproduce this in 720P! So what did we learn? Thank you.

1080i refreshes 1/2 the screen at 60hz, where 720p refreshes the full screen at 60hz. It seems as though 1080i is causing timing issues in the TK850, possibly related to the 60hz refresh rate of the .47in XPR DMD and support circuits.

1080i has faced criticism when used to broadcast sports because it can introduce motion artifacts.

Is anyone else getting a significant amount of dithering with the tk850? ( i think dithering is the right term. It looks like film grain). I've noticed on some movies it's really bad. Digitally filmed movies don't seem to have the issue. Projector is on eco mode. The issue occurs in 1080p and UHD. I tried playing with sharpness and brightness but it doesn't change the results much. Reduced brightness helps a little but at the cost of a dim image.

I would suggest adjusting the Cinemaster settings for Pixel Enhancer 4K and try adjusting the Noise Reduction settings. It is also important to turn down the sharpening settings from your source device, as these can help emphasize film grain, which is what you are probably seeing. Film grain is often unnoticeable on 1080p displays, but true 4K shows what was really recorded on the actual film. Film grain typically is most prevalent in low light scenes where high speed film was used and/or the film was underexposed.

I didn't even see the noise reduction option until you mentioned it, unfortunately it's grey out and i cant select it. I tried user mode, HDR and non HDR modes... Any ideas?

As per page 23 (see pages 23-26) of the manual the projector has to see a valid signal to allow access to all menu options. Some projectors will not allow access to some menu items when it sees an RGB input signal.

Do you believe this has the same lens as the 3550? Does it have a sharper image than the 3550?

Also, how are the brightness and black levels compared to the 1070?

Been thinking of getting this model was curious how it is in a room with some lighting. Also was curious on lamp how long would it last say if use this for about 6 or 7 hrs. a day.

Quick update, as per the request of BenQ support I tried a different cable box. The 2nd box has the same issue with 1080i but on this one I was able to change the settings to both 1080p and 4k and the issue is not there. The first box would not hold the setting with 1080p, but it did with the TV it is now connected to. Go figure. Thank you everybody for your assistance with this.

Hey guys/gals, quick update:

The planned comparison to the Ht3550 is still happening and I apologize for the delay. I got busy with work and then had some health concerns the least of which was... I caught pneumonia. I’m still not fully recovered but I’m starting to be able to function again. Long story short I haven’t looked at a movie or even powered up the projector since the Super Bowl. I’ve just been that out of it. I’ll hopefully be a little more active here in the coming weeks.

What to do if you find yourself stuck with no hope of rescue:
Consider yourself lucky that life has been good to you so far. Alternatively, if life hasn't been good to you so far, which given your present circumstances seems to be more likely, consider yourself lucky that it won't be troubling you much longer...

Just installed a TK850. Have a mixed feeling so far. Are there any settings that worked well for anyone here? If so, would you mind sharing? Thanks!

First mention what don't you like about it and your setup, source, etc.

Glad you worked it out. As a side note and for anyone seeing this in the future, Bell Fibe converts all HD channels to 720p regardless of whether they are broadcast at 720p or 1080i, so there is no benefit to outputting 1080i from the box.

That was the weird part out of all of this, the box would not stay at 1080p. I would set it, it would see the accept message, accept it, then 10 seconds later it would just go blank for a second and back to 1080i. When I swapped the box it had no trouble with staying at 1080p when connected to a Sony XBR.

Either way I'm mostly happy now. The yellows are still off by quite I bit but I will just wait for somebody to post settings or I will look into a calibration.
