Why not project in your living room? Yes it's white everywhere, but as you mentioned the size/shape of the room helps. Looks like the right wall and floor are the biggest offenders and on the right wall it looks like you already have a black shade in the window that it closest to the screen.

During the day there is a decent amount of ambient light.

I'm thinking of putting an Optoma HD3300 or one of the new Epson 3D projectors in there - and possibly with a black diamond screen to help daytime viewing?

I had my main projectr in the basement for testing and it actually looked worse than the living room picture, because the light is getting bounced all over and back onto the screen - reducing the CR significantly. Weird!

JVC RS-10 (same as HD-250)
148" diagonal MaxxMudd-RS LL screen
Tron Blu-ray
LG player

Having a hard time trying to figure out how to post bigger pics off Picasa.

Now that's an image to write home about...perhaps the most impressive I've seen on screenshot war. Very nice

i would say very impressive if there's no masking and you don't have a scope screen. is this true?

I am extremely impressed with the blacks. If I tried to post that same screenshot it would be all gray. My PJ is outdated but I am glad to see that the black levels are very good these days.

those are jvc blacks.

i also think pioneer helped make some version of the JVC, and we know what pioneer did for plasma blacks...

it's not THAT impressive unless it's not 2.35 screen. if there are black bars there and not visible, you certainly have a good CR projector! If it's an inherent scope setup, you too can have that image for a relatively good price.

Not to jab at the guy's setup, just trying to say it's not that hard to get. JVCs were good with blacks from what I remember from the RS1. That was the dgital PJ that had CRT owners switching over.

He also had it ISF calibrated which I think makes a big diff and adds to that great image y'all are seeing. My 1080UB also got the ISF treatment and it helped a lot if the tech knows what he is doing and is familiar with the model or brand.

I m really surprised at this stage you don't see too many ppl getting their PJ ISF'd, yet they would spend upwards to 3k for stewart screen. I would think $300 allocated towards an ISF and $2500 for a screen would be a killer combo allocation. Spread your investment around...

Yes Pioneer put their Kuro label on a re-branded JVC RS2,
I almost bought one 2 years ago, but it was a little outside my price range at the time.

My old Epson 1080UB just turned 3 years old last Friday and I think its finally upgrade time
Here's a few shots on my cheap un-masked 120" 16:9 1.3 gain matt white motorized drop down...ebay $250
This could be my last screen shots with this amazing little PJ that's served me well, soon to replaced with a new JVC HD250

Transformers Dark of the Moon:

I'm a Huge fan of deep black levels and great contrast (I have two Kuro 50" plasma TVs)
this un-cropped image shows entire 120" 16:9 screen, clearly the "black bars" are not an issue for me at all.
I expect the HD250 to be as good or better from what I've been reading of other UB owners than made the switch to DLA

I dont have Tron on Bluray,
but I did PVR the 1.78 non-scope 1080i TV version off the movie central
I may have to go buy the Bluray now. The TV version is a bit soft on the details.

Shot on my Epson 1080UB, cheap digi camera (Fuji 5800s)
I tried using night mode and aperture priority...but a DSLR would be much better to capture shadow details

auto -night mode

aperture priority

...not too bad for a pj originally introduced 4 years ago
But I still want a JVC...that used to go for $7k (Canadian) back then.
i can get an HD250 with a spare lamp and 3 year warranty for less than I paid for my Epson now!
