I love the way Mac amps look, but I can't imagine my system sounding any better than it does now. I have Anthem P2 and P5 amps I was using with my D2 and the 151 sounds incredible with these amps. I've been considering a new processor for about a year now and I'm in audio nirvana with the 151. Thanks Thrang and Tony for your reviews of the 151. G-Rex, your impressions are spot on for me also.

It hasn't been talked about too much but I also love the remote and the ease of setup especially when using the network interface. I can do room correction from another room so I don't have to listen to test tones, all I have to do is go in and change microphone positions.

Glad you're enjoying - it is a relatively undiscovered gem in the realm of processors....

I've not heard the Anthem's, but certainly they are very well respected. Addino had Classé, then Bryston amps, but eventually went Mac...

The web interface is certainly a great feature - but don't you like sitting in the room during the test tones?

Thrang, you have a knack with images:). I don't know how many times I sat in my Projector closet with the Anthem ARC test tones but I never liked it. The tones for the Mac are different but I still don't like being in the room with them. My theater room is basically sound proof so when I leave the room I can hardly hear them.

Although I couldn't enjoy the Bryston processor, the amps were very nice. Excellent build quality and stand up to their reputation in the pro world. However, I am really enjoying the Mac amps and don't see myself moving to anything else at this point. As mentioned by more than one person here, even at low levels these amps sing.

Yes, running away with the iPad in hand is the ideal way to calibrate

From what I read at AA prices on McIntosh gear is going up 15% when the factory reopens in two weeks. MX151 $12,500+15%=$14,375.
Glad I already own one. smile.gif

Not all gear though. I may have misunderstood but I believe the processors are not affected by the price increase. Mostly amps.

There was a post on AA saying 15% increase across the board, while another post said only applies to two channel gear. So you could be right.

Hi,
Thanks for creating this dedicated thread.
Just moved from the DHC-80.3 to the MX150 and only spent a couple of hours.

From an input 5.1 signal, how can I get 7.1 output ? It was automatic on the Integra, I may have missed something here.

From a 2.0 point of view, listening music, I'm discovering my 1038Be 2 though my MC402. In other words, this processor sounds better than the Integra in 2.0, no debate for me.
I need to spend sometime in HC to get it ready for enjoying movies smile.gif
Thanks in advance for your feedback,
Cheers

Maybe that's what they mean by "legacy" products. I guess we'll see....

I believe you would set surround mode to Movie if I'm not mistaken. You would also set PLIIx as your default for post processing for 5.1 incoming signal. I'm not currently doing 7.1 but Thrang will know for sure as he is...

To expand 5.1 to 7.1 you want to choose one of the IIx listening modes - PLIIX Movie or Music for example. Note that a lot of broadcast 5.1 that I've experienced expands oddly with Movie - sides basically become non-existent, and content is only heard from the rears. According to Roger Dressler in his post above, this is expected behavior for mono-mixed surround channels and the PLIIx Movie mode. Music, or stereo surround mixes expanded with Movie, play content front the sides as well as the rears when upmixed.

When No Processing is selected, the source is played as fed to the 151.

Thanks much for this.

I'm still confused since DPLIIx stands for Dolby Pro Logic II, doesnt' it ?
If so, what's about applying DPLIIx against DTS 5.1 input ?

I may be wrong, but interested in the full explanation smile.gif
Cheers

Pro Logic II is the 5-channel version, Pro Logic IIx is the 7-channel variant.

PLIIx is format agnostic, so it can be applied to any compression codec (lossless or lossy), or even uncompressed audio (PCM).

This thread is going to die quickly if someone doesn't hurry up and find something wrong. Its all too easy on this processor.

Hi,
I do not know anything about Voicing.
Have we got a tool, ie for MEN220 ?
I can see from the menu that we can import some files ?
May be an existing thread ?
Thank you.

There is an MX150 Voicing Tool if you wanted to try and create your own target curves - I think if you email McIntosh technical support, they will provide it.

However, it has not been updated for years, and requires Windows XP to run, which I no longer have,

I will update the opening threads later to note this, and post a screen shot of the default target curves that have been provided to me

Thrang- good idea on posting pics of the target curves for the different voicing modes. Really helped me understand their purpose. Shame they haven't updated the tool for custom curves. We should put the pressure on someone at Mac or Lyngdorf to get this updated so it will run on Win7 or at least in compatibility mode.

Here is an image of the different preloaded target curves (voices). You could create a custom curve using an app provided by Macintosh and a Win XP machine.

Of the 5 active targets, I don't see one I'd like. The Music curve appears to want to simulate the so called B&W dip, but much broader. What's up wit dat? No likee. This would be more my cuppa tea:

The Movie+Action preset seems pretty close. You can load your own custom voice to the 151. May may use this one (looks like the JBL Synth curve if I recall). Would you say that's a 10db boost at 35hz and mild rolloff at 10k?

It's not just that it has boost and rolloff but the particular shape. Based on the canned target curves it looks like the MX150 has all the right handles to create a delightful target curve. And be able to call them up at will, too. That's something I'd only seen in the Dirac Live product until now. So it's another gold star for the MX150!

I spoke with Chuck a time ago regarding the 5 preset curves. The 151's lack of dialog normalization/dynamic eq made me think it would be optimal to create a curve similar to a Fletcher-Munson curve. This was to create a solid dynamics at lower volume (though the curve wouldn't change as the volume did like dynamic eq). Chuck said the Movie+Action was close enough to the F-M curve that it may not be worth the custom curve. I would agree with him. Movie+Action sounds excellent at all volumes for all kinds of movies. Dialog is not only easier to hear, but sounds more substantial (very smooth with the right amount of mid range, which creates a very a natural dialog presentation). Thank you Lyngdorf. smile.gif

Do you all change the voicing depending on the movie you watch or do you leave it at one preset? What voicings are you all using?

@Roger

If you are ever in the northeast, come visit addino and I. The default curves are actually quite good! Though it would be nice if Mac would update the app so it would work in this century

@Grex

I generally watch Movie or Action, rarely Action+Movie, though I will give it a try more...I use Music voicing for Music, and Neutral for most TV
