Thank you, Ran. It was great having you over, and good luck today! Eager to hear how it works out for you.

It's an opportunity to thank @appelz . His magic is beyond belief. Exceeded my wildest expectations.
I had no clue my system could sound this way. It's now obvious to me that a high-end Trinnov installation, without someone at the level of Adam calibrating it, is a crime. It's so awesome Adam was willing to make this very long-distance travel. Much joy in our household.

Guys, I think we should give some credit to Trinnov for constantly improving the Altitude. I had a few handshake issues in the past, it was taking me about 15 min the Unit to shut down and a lot of troubles with Apple TV 4K. Since the last SW update all issues have gone...completely. Now the Unit shuts down in 30- 40 sec and the sound from the Apple TV is amazing. I also think that the clarity and energy from the speakers have vastly improved. Well done Guys. Highly appreciated.

Anyone know if Trinnov tech support also updates the JBL SDP units, as they are responsible for the software?

As someone who is considering a Trinnov I wonder why, at this stage they are having these issues in the first place. But glad to see that they are improving and squashing bugs.

Trinnov has great support on consistent improvements/bug fixes/upgrades. Certainly better than any other processor I have owned, including the Datasat. Don't let those concerns keep you from making the decision to purchase one.

I've had no such issues with my Trinnov Altitude 32 at all. Maybe your unit's software got messed up somehow so the update cured it.

I usually contact JBL synthesis and schedule the update, and its always done within a short amount of time. Whether it is JBL or Trinnov I do not know but the SDP has been update very quickly multiple times now. Trinnov did have to enable Roon but JBL contacted them and I just left the unit on while at work and Roon was working when I came home. You should be fine either way.

Yup ! I have a mostly Adam Audio setup - A7X centre, pair of A77X's for left/right, and 12 A3X's for the rest, plus two SVS PC2000's as subs; so everything is active and all on shielded XLR resulting in a 9.2.6 layout (I've attached a rather fuzzy photo of the left hand side, but you get the idea...)

It's by far the best system I have owned; partly down to the Trinnov Altitude, size of the room and masses of passive treatment, but also the use of active speakers.

Having heard - and owned - many variations of active and passive over the years, personally I think one is both technically and sonically more accurate, but that's always going to be a personal taste.

Oh and one extra benefit is that you can literally grow the system, as funds allow, one pair of speakers at a time...

Hope that helps -

Ian

Hi All,

I sold my Theta and its on to the Trinnov. I was getting ready to buy the Altitude 16, but after reading a good chunk of this thread, I'm wondering if the 32 might be better for me. Are there any differences between the two units, other than the number of channels? Has anybody here gone from the 16 to the 32? Could you say why you made the switch?

Thanks,
David

Alt32 offer multichannel digital out - very convenient if you decide to use active speakers. Alt32 uses i7 processor which is more powerful than i3 used in Alt16 and hence processing of hi-rez tracks would be in native state (say 24/192) or who knows, Trinnov may decide to offer more goodies on Alt32 as premium differentiator later on. Some folks mentioned Alt32 sounds slightly better to their ears. Trinnov FR tech person told me sonically they could not detect much differences between Alt16/32 for most of inputs anyways--so there you have it

My $0.02

Also important, the A32 support 24/192 in up to (and including) 24 channels. While A16 supports 24/96 in up to 16 channels. In addition to DB25 connection for both analog and digital inputs and outputs.

I was able to use the A16 and A32 in the same room using analog outputs for 2 weeks before I sold the A16 and there is no way comparing apples to apples you can hear a difference.

Since going all digital on the A32, I believe there is a difference but that’s probably just in my mind. and also like comparing apples to oranges.

Hi Ment- there is at least 60% (street) price premium of Alt32 over Alt16 for 16 channel out, so you would guess Alt32 has to be much better than Alt16 and no harm in manufacturer (Trinnov) explicitly stating that or touting Alt32 for any use case scenario- but that is not the case- I like that honesty from Trinnov.

If I recall correctly the only potential qualitative different between the units is the 16 is limited to a 96khz signal - the 32 can process up to 192? Someone correct me please if I’m wrong

So if you listen to a lot of native greater than 96 kHz music (not the upsampled stuff which is quite prevalent) then you might benefit (though I think it’s largely nonsense that we can distinguish significant quality difference in that rarified air)

Of course for movies (at 48) there would be no difference

So there’s nothing “unspoken” regarding some mysterious qualitative differences. The units are essential the same qualitatively, with the significant differences in channel count and I/O (and faceplate engraving if aesthetics matter)
