ACT 4 looks the part and am sure is very nice to hear as well but why keep it at 11/13 channels? Why not go for 15/16? Or even more? I mean object based audio is here, ACT 4 is a 2015 model. Why restrict your users?

The ACT4 is intended to represent the best possible performance whilst still keeping to a reasonable price and retaining ease of use as a key feature. Since the codecs are all limited to this sort of channel it makes sense for the electronics to do the same.

Of course there is also a clear need for something a bit more unique at the higher end of the market where in 15 or 16 channels is no where near high enough - especially if there is a desire to use the processor DSP to go active.

Some more info and this time it is good news for audiophiles.

All of the digital inputs on the unit support 192/24 hi res audio which I find pretty amazing.

On the analogue side it is possible to fully bypass the dsp with a direct analogue connection.

The unit also includes a phono input for turntable fans.

New datasheet for the ACT4 has been released. I thought it might be interesting for some to see the back panel. Also note that the DACS are confirmed as 192/24 enabled not just the inputs. Not sure anything else HT centric is doing this so far?

Trinnov Altitude handles everything @ native res up to 192/24. Dunno about others.

At some point they actually have to release this thing right? I'm sort of interested, but it's been forever!

Hello,

I'd heard rumours of a $4K price tag on this pre/pro. Is it anywhere near that price?

I too remember hearing the 4004 power amp many years ago, and I actually preferred it's sound at the time to the contemporary Krell's, it was a pity the brand was never well represented in the UK and promoted properly. Even after the distributor mark up, VAT, import duty and dealer margin, the 4004 was still not hideously priced by UK standards.

Thanks and best wishes,

Dave

The trick is to make the analysis process as efficient as possible IMO rather than the correction system. If I had a pound for every system I heard with upward sloping treble after room correction is applied...

Yep, I love Dirac. I can do my room well in a few hours. Be even quicker when I finally get Dirac v2. But alas this is about the ACT4. And I know Neil does very well with PEQS.

It also wouldn't my first turn around the block with Dirac setup either...

Please read my comment again. The skill is in the analysis which you can distill even further to target curve. The easiest system to get a good sound with is the JBL synth. That is a great tool and for me a good reference point on how it should've done.

I know this would be all speculation at this point but any comments/opinions/thoughts on the ACT 4 vs. LS10?

I think wait till the machine is out, the spec is firm and then you can demo and maybe start comparing. I'm not familiar with Acurus. Im guessing this machine may sit somewhere in between the Marantz/Anthem processors and the Ls10 in terms of price, but obviously it's not firm.

If it leans more towards the Ls10 price- depending on which territory you're looking at, then I'd say wait to see if Dirac actually appears on the Ls10. If it does, and you have Atmos, DTS:X,Auro with the Datasat sound, it would make the Ls10 a very formidable pro.

But like I said, it's just speculation at this stage..I'd wait till the ACT 4 is officially available.

It is unfair of me to make the sound comparison since I am probably the only person lucky enough to have heard both so far but I really think that people will be surprised by that part of the ACT4. I don't think the guys consciously set out to make an audiophile piece but they have really done it.

Nicely done - first on market with DTS:W ("when?") right? DTS:X on a chip, ahead of everyone else, even the Japanese receivers!

My unit has shipped from the first batch. General availability should be mid November since there is a huge backlog of orders. This one has been a long time brewing after all!!!

The stories around DTS-X are very interesting - well worth seeking out the IAL team at CEDIA for more. It is really incredible what the guys have achieved in getting this out before everyone else.

For those interested - here is a beauty shot of the finished device showing the UI and another couple of tricks. The little slot above the display is home to the IR receiver and the brightness level sensor for the touchscreen. IAL really wanted to get IR built in to the unit despite all the other control options included and I am sure that many people will still be delighted to have this control option.

"Tons of back orders"

To a small company selling to a narrow market segment that could mean less than 10 or more than 25...

I plan to visit the both to chat and listen to a few demos.

This and the new Audio Control have promise. Before these options it was $3,000 or $20,000.

Cat's out of the bag (demos/presentations already being run) so I guess you could tell us a little more about DTS:X in the Acurus? It would generate a lot of eyeballs and popularity for this thread .

1. How many speaker outputs (channel + object) are available with the Acurus's DTS:X implementation? From the picture of the unit's rear panel, I assume it is 7.1.4?

2. Are there fixed speaker layouts that you pick? Or

3. Is there a diagram from which you pick your speakers? Does diagram have both ceiling and high-wall speakers & could you please post the diagram here?

Thanks.

DTS:X in shipped units in 6-8 weeks. 7.4 or 9.2 and the last two can be L/R heights or additional tops - I need to clarify this last and I'll do that tomorrow. Appears to be "fixed" locations.

They'd like to do a few more speakers but they need to resolve some obstacles. Interesting approach with two DSPs per codec - Atmos/DTS:X.

A couple other notes:

Neural X is included in the initial release 6-8 weeks out

No, Atmos will not upmix DTS codecs and vice versa

3 sub outs, each EQ'd individually i.e. no summed EQ
