I grew up watching it a ton on VHS, although it was probably way over my head at that time, I still thought it was awesome. I will say that it is sloooooooow, but I was a weird kid who had a good attention span. Haha. Was also a big fan of Dune when I was like 5, so what can I say?

The movie is an absolute technical marvel and I always found myself fascinated with its cinematography at large. Mind blowing that it came out when it did. I'd say give it a whirl so you can see what all the hubbub's about, BUT I make no promises as to whether or not you'll like it. While I'm a big fan, I don't think I'll ever subject my wife to it since she has big time ADD when it comes to movies. She can barely sit through ANY feature length film, no matter what it is. That's why I always tell her that her opinion on a movie doesn't count. Hehehe.
Downloaded the movie and have seen several moments where scenes go 1/2 frame and K looses HDCP handshake.
This appears watching specific scenes

Anyone watched a scene or watched the whole movie yet.

This is a first for K in our system.

Going to try to watch the whole movie tonight.

Would not be good for this to happen during a demo.

Huh. It only happens with 2001? What you may want to try first is to delete the film off your server, then re-download. Sometimes that clears up odd issues like that in case something was corrupted in the file. Rare, but possible.

ALL movies integrated into K, playable in our dedicated theater or family room. No more searching for media in our home. Any remains discs are stored in the vault. I keep it full and replace with store purchases if I need room for movies K doesn’t have. When you have two zones you really appreciate K. In the past we had to carry discs from one area to another. First world issues for sure.... SJ
I do exactly the same. Watching movies is so so much simpler and I find that I only need to purchase about 1 in 10 movies outside of the Kaleidescape movie store (for me that is about one a month).

Just to remind people in general that there are two studios that are not getting immersive audio: Fox and Universal. K has said they are working with both studios to get the updated audio but until this happens, it should not be a surprise that titles from these studios will not have immersive audio.

Also, no Fox titles have UV rights.

Well another interesting thing just happened.

Tried to delete the movie and I ended up in a unless loop of delete / confirm delete /confirm

So I said screw it and started to download it again.

I watched my newly upgraded UHD HDR quality version of 2001: a Space Odyssey on my Kscape system yesterday and it was perfect. I thought the HDR treatment was out of this world.

Yeah, I was shocked how great it was. Was like looking at a new movie. Frankly better than a lot of recent releases... SJ

Kaleidescape Strato Movie Player 4K HDR $4,500

Stop the madness!! Hooked up my Strato last night and set a couple movies to download.

Now while taking my family around to run holiday errands, I’ve been browsing the Kstore and have spent $350 on movies while sitting in my car.

This is both amazing and frickin dangerous!!

Where is the thread for kscape addiction group therapy, cause y’all are enablers?!!

You can not use any 3rd party hardware. You would have to buy another Strato or Terra server to expand.

There are a lot of movies with Atmos on release, and some that get upgraded later. But their are still a couple studios which aren’t providing Atmos content.

Others can comment on the number of studios and amount of content missing Atmos.

UV is great but slowly dying. Movies Anywhere is desperately needed. I refuse to buy any movies on K that don’t offer digital rights, just for the fact that if K were to go under (already had one close call) and the Strato had hard drive failure, you would have no way to recover that content.

(Sorry thought this was posted in the K Strato thread)

Got it.. Good to know, that's essentially my whole collection!!

Good points on the digital rights. I hadn't considered that aspect - and an important one considering the company's history.

Blu-ray download speed?

Thanks.

I have Xfinity Gigabit internet with all enterprise grade network gear.

My Strato downloads top out just over 100mbps.

So 4K HDR downloads average between 1 hours and 30 mins to about 1 hour and 45 mins.

I have only ever downloaded a couple standard Blu-ray movies. They averaged around 1 hours for download.

The Strato doesn’t come close to saturating my internet connection. But it seems the Terra server is able to download much faster. I have seen a few people show download speeds in the 250-300mbps range with the Terra server.

Not sure what typical Xfinity speeds are, but I get a measily 27Mbs and 4K HDR downloads take around 5.5 hours.

Like @ccool96 says some users are seeing speeds approaching 100Mbs to a Strato. Some users on the KScape Owners forum have been reporting increased speeds to a Terra Server in excess of 600Mbs - downloading 4K HDR files in around 14 minutes

Chris.
Hope all is well - I wish you all the best.
My Stratos speeds have run upto 180 mbps - 4K HDR movies downloading as fast as 44 minutes.
Just don't download when watching a movie as that slows down the download substantially.

For my Strato, 4K movies take anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. In general, it's about 30 minutes to download per hour of video for me over gigabit internet.

However, I'm pretty sure the write speeds to the disk are the limiting factor here. If you have at least 200 Mbps internet, I don't think you'll see a difference from gigabit.

My Terra servers average 250-260Mbps with a 500Mbps copper connection. 30' average download time for a 4K HDR movie. I have seen 300Mbps but this is rather the exception.
My 3U server rarely exceeds 100Mbps. Before whatever K upgraded, it was close to 55Mbps for the Terra and 30Mbps for the 3U.

Fundamental question: this one's probably discussed too many times before; so, please forgive me for asking. I have a bluray disc of a movie for which I'd like to get the HDR version from KScape. Is there some discounted way I can get that via using whatever digital code that's usually present inside the bluray case? Or no - it doesn't work that way?

It depends on the studio as they all seem to be different. You can try the code and see whether it shows up in your library. UV only works this way for studios that support. If you don’t have the code, you need someone way to catalogue the disc. If the movie allows disc to digital (and you have it catalogued), you can purchase the digital copy for a decent price and possibly upgrade. Again, all studio dependent. For the encore line, the only way I know of it to use an Alto or Vault to catalogue a movie. They don’t even really sell this anymore.. Also, you could try the Vudu disc to digital process and it the movie is UV, it also may show up and possibly allow upgrading... It’s a real crap shoot for sure! SJ

Many do, but I found that they work anyway. Also, the disk to digital on Vudu is a good deal. When I got my first Strato a few years ago, I took the time to try all my discs. It was really inexpensive in batches of 10 at that time. Think the prices are higher now and what a pain doing it, but got many hits which then I could download from K.... SJ

Movies taking about 3hr at 50mbps. Think some one asked before if it was possible to port forward router to Kscape servers and it probably wouldnt make a difference.

Check out the sale going on the K store: https://www.kaleidescape.com/movie-s...n/holiday_2018
MI: Fallout and the Quiet Place for only $18! Both were finally blessed with Atmos on the store, so now that they're cheap too, I'm in! Haha. Some of the movies aren't THAT big of a discount, but some are now cheap enough that they've moved over from my "Rental" column to my "might as well buy it on K" category.

Hmm. Actually the rest of the Mission Impossible series is on sale too (mostly at $16 for the new 4K versions), so might be a good time for me to go ahead and complete the collection.

I don’t know which system you’re using, but if you’re using a system like a Strato (all-in-one player/server), and if you’re actively using the system (browsing the onscreen display, playing a movie), that will greatly slow downloads.
