So how do you like Zidoo? Which model do you use? How easy is it to get to the page that displays the movies? I really like Nvidia/Plex but it won't allow me to stop it from upsampling 1080P to 4K as I want my Lumagen to do that.

As for the company which is the subject of discussion, they are grossly overpriced. If, on the other hand, I could use my existing ripped copies and they had an awesome, spectacular, amazing front end/UI and if their price was around $1000 to $2000, I might be interested.

I can't imagine that Fusion is really targeting the "true" K prospect. Nor do I suspect that they have unsuspecting/uneducated customers. These folks must be doing something right. They have been around a while and, at least on the surface, have a pretty impressive headquarters building. And they either have figured out a way to not irritate Hollywood, or their volume is so low, Hollywood just doesn't care

I have no knowledge on how easy or difficult to use (rip and play) their system is. But for someone who wants a good interface (I will assume they have one) and is not interested in the K system, BUT does not have the technical resources to build their own, this could be a nice solution. (I did some research and the MSRP of their 4K solution appears to be around $7K). As I said previously, if their UI is top notch and they have a 4K player (to use on my existing ripped movies) that is reasonably priced and is much better supported than products like Nvidia/Plex or Dune or ....., they could have a small prospect base as well (I would be one of them).

I am going to do more in-depth research.

Definitely. Would be worth starting up a new thread, as a product like that deserves its own versus starting up a different rabbit trail in the middle of the K thread. Haha. Let us know what you find out! The product sounds interesting but I'm still perplexed as to how they've Jedi mind-tricked the studios' goons (lawyers).

Agree. And IF they respond to my request for information, I will do just that. Based upon what I found (and noted restrictions), it appears they are ripping with MakeMKV. Stay tuned.

Ask them if their players output HDR. Cause the site talks about 4k or UHD and not HDR.

And yes, new thread.

Good catch on UHD vs HDR. If I hear from them (not too confident) I will ask about that and lots of other things - and will create a new thread with their responses.

I REALLY hope they have a good solution for those of us who rip our own movies. I think they represent close to zero threat to Kaleidescape, regardless of how good their product is. Ripping HDR movies can still be a pain in the rear on occasion and if they are using MakeMKV (my guess), they will have the same issue. And 99% of K users (and prospects) want nothing to do with that process.

I will post something once I hear anything - or don't - but it will be on a new thread.

Why not just start an official discussion thread for the device anyway ?

So the word was K signed 20th Century and NBCUniversal for UHD advanced audio codecs months ago... but nothing official announced and no change to the audio tracks on those titles. Anyone have any idea what the delay is, or if this “word” was a lie?

I wouldn't doubt that those deals have been made. However, studio distribution move like frozen molasses in technical implementation. Unless you've made a DMCA violation. THEN they pounce with a swiftness. Hahaha. Their lawyers move WAAAAAAAY quicker than their distribution techs. Probably a bit more incentive ($$$).

Well the codec packages are already “done” for the UHD discs, so not sure how complicated to upload the revised packages

My understanding is they were being uploaded to the K servers nearly 2 months ago but still nothing

They need to clarify this, MGM (and other studios ie Criterion), and Movies Anywhere launch date...

To be clear, MGM was not a given, but described as a WiP. Advanced codecs for 20th Century and NBCUniversal UHD as well as Movies Anywhere were described as "done deals", with codecs now seemingly well overdue given their "being uploaded" status from nearly two months ago. Now no clear word...

MA was only described as later this year, presuming they were waiting at least until UV was put to pasture... but I dont see why they wouldn't announce this. It only helps market their system.

Kaleidescape has a pretty strict policy of not pre-announcing features before they are released. They have said in the past that the workflows for handling files are very complex (on both the studio and Kaleidescape sides), especially when they are different from streaming requirements. Not sure though why they can't just get the bit-for-bit for 4K discs like they do for HD.

I love one of the lines from this article that people just think K gets the 4K Blu-ray and rips it...

It cannot be that complicated... It's possible they do a video encode to minimize compression vs UHD, but the audio is bitstream so that's that, and they must have a fairly repeatable workflow to be viable. Even so, Kscape files and bit perfect UHD rips are about the same size (sometimes the UHD rips are larger, but I presume thats the extra stuff on the disc) so I don't think anything deep, other than security of course.

The "very complex" line they throw around is a bit perplexing. How much will the studios let them alter the contents? I can't imagine much at all...

Yes. I assume it’s being released as a new/different version. Same thing happened with some of the Fast and Furious titles.

I've noticed that DC Universe animated 4k blu rays, such as "Constantine: City of Demons", "Batman: Assault on Arkham", "Justice League Dark", "Reign of the Supermen", "Batman and Harley Quinn", "Batman: Gotham By Gaslight", "Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay" are available on disc as both 4k HDR as well as blu ray, but on Kaleidescape only as blu ray. Wonder why KScape doesn't have the 4k versions? Or is the 4k perhaps no better other than upscaled 2k animation and the "HDR" is simply added in the 4k conversion process so that its not true 4k or HDR? The ones of these listed at the "Real or Fake 4k" website are all listed as upsampled 2k but with HDR!

https://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/show....php?t=1158431 No dealer is authorized to tell you I refer to them - any referrals I make will be done personally by me. Over the years I have found certain dealer(s) who I cannot recommend for good reason.

I did an A/B of these on K in HD and in iTunes in UHD and there was a noticeable quality advantage to iTunes. I share the desire to see all these in UHD on K and wonder why they are not.

All but “Justice League Dark” are available in 4K from the K Store as follows:

Constantine: City of Demons - UHD/HDR
Batman: Assault on Arkham - UHD
Justice League Dark - HD
Reign of the Supermen - UHD/HDR
Batman and Harley Quinn - HDR
Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - UHD/HDR
Suicide Squad: Hell To Pay - UHD

Anyone with Xfinity??

I’m new to this. I’m downloading at 100 mbps per Kacape. . I have Xfinity.

Are there better, faster plans? I’ve never checked and don’t even know what plan I have.

Looks like 1.5 hours per 4K HDR movie.

I have 20 movies in the queue.

Also, does xfinity charge extra when doing big downloads or just throttled?

Goodbye to a great audio and video genius and writer... JOHN GANNON. I enjoyed your friendship, wit and a nice long run we took around Indianapolis at CEDIA years back... and for buying my Runco 980 Ultra years back... you saved my ass! Rest in peace.

Thanks! Is there a cap on data with that plan? Likely 4-8 movies downloaded per month. Thanks
