There was when I started . Now I pay $49 a month for unlimited data . my kids are almost teenagers , between their streaming, Netflix, and Kscape downloads , I quickly realized that cap was a bad idea . Steve has same plan as well now ..

Got it.

How many GB of data is a typical 4k HDR move download?

Goodbye to a great audio and video genius and writer... JOHN GANNON. I enjoyed your friendship, wit and a nice long run we took around Indianapolis at CEDIA years back... and for buying my Runco 980 Ultra years back... you saved my ass! Rest in peace.

You will need the most current modem to get gigabit speed . You can buy it on amazon , you don’t have to get it from Comcast . Just look on their website and make sure it is compatible with Comcast gigabit

If you can get reliable gigabit internet , it’s really a blessing with Kscape Terra server . Getting a 4K movies downloaded in 10-15 min . It is almost instant

For Cox must be Docsis 3.1 for gigabit!

They used to, but I think they stopped doing that. They would start throttling in our area after a while.

There is still a cap. $50 to uncap (Xfinity). Upgraded last night.

Xfinity on their website should have a list of approved modems to gigabit internet. Cox does, and all modems for Cox Gigablast (gigabit) are 3.1, not 3.0. Some modems are better than others. My installer, also does networking & computers as well, recommended for me the Arris Surfboard SB8200 of the ones listed at the Cox website.

A little too quiet... still no word on missing advanced codecs (20th Century and NBCUnoversal); no word adding additional studios: and nothing about Movies Anywhere

If there isn’t some positive news soon, check the classifieds...

I wonder how much of this might be the studios having much less interest in shiny discs and much more in streaming? And if that is true, assigning resources to "help" what may be the most insignificant player in the business (Kaleidescape), must be way down the list of things to think about.

At the moment, no - there's a lot to like about the solution. But my patience is running thin...

Without clear and public statements as to the delivery of at least advanced codecs and Movies Anywhere tie-in, both of which were "indicated" to me in a rather clear and direct fashion, I will likely move on. I have too much investment in an Atmos/DTS:X setup to not have the appropriate software. And I wouldn't like being lied tio.

Atmos/DTS:X for 20th Century and NBCUniversals are months beyond the indications, while Movies Anywhere is supposed to be later this year (though why they wouldn't announce this now is a mystery, as it could only help sales of their solution).

Nahh... both 20th Century and NBC do provide HD and UHD content to KScape already, so the workflow is in place. The issue is sole advanced audio codecs for UHD.

Ironically, a number of HD titles feature advanced audio codecs, but the UHD versions of those titles have lower quality audio codecs. So unclear what the issue, but it needs to resolved for something positioned as the premier playback solution for the HT environment.

Adding MGM and Criterion would be nice as well, but audio and MA are the chief concerns for me at the moment...

Interesting.

I sold my K stuff a couple of years ago and the reasons that caused me to do so have still not been addressed. I really do hope for K's sake as well as their many clients, that they can get these addressed sooner than later.

Kaleidescape Strato Movie Player 4K HDR $4,500

I’m considering my options with K. Right now I put my Synology back in and rebought an Oppo and firmwared it. I’m building up my own content again.

I’m going to wait on K until CEDIA at least. I hope they give me reason to keep the K and re-eliminate the server.

Edit: In the meantime though I’m not spending any money in the K store.

I'm new to K but I have to tell you that despite not all soundtracks being Atmos or the like, the user interface and ease of use is really nice. All soundtracks sound solid with the upmixing in the Trinnov.

Yes, upmixing is nice with the Altitude but no substitute for native Atmos or DTS:X... K needs to address a few things I think...they have a huge price premium on their products so the solution needs to be unparalleled.

I totally agree with JaremyP's statement above.

I love the Kaleidescape experience, ease of use and quality for many titles they offer. What I'm looking for in a digital solution is to go completely without physical media, all titles (or reasonably most) in the highest audio and video quality available and a digital copy of all the titles I pay my hard earned money for. With a growing family and many TVs, computers, iPads and other devices, it is very important the titles we purchase can be viewed from sources other than the Strato. My wife and kids demand it.

We own somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,000 titles. Even if I had a Terra server, they would not all fit. Once we watch content, we delete most of those titles from the Strato to make room for newly purchased content. That means when my wife and kids want to watch a title, which has been deleted from our Strato/Theater, they must use their iPads, Apple TVs, iPhones, or PCs to watch the movies they love. If you have kids, you know your kids want to watch their movies over and over and over...

With Ultraviolet, we could at least purchase some titles and have them on the Strato and all our devices, but with UV gone and no mention of any other digital rights replacement, such as Movies Anywhere, any title we purchase would not be available to the family on demand. I legitimately pay good money for all the movies we own, so we should get digital rights for each in this day and age. I am not willing to spend money on titles and not get digital rights. I am not willing to "risk" purchasing thousands of dollars of titles to see Kaleidescape go out of business again. I am happy they only shut down for a month, but it could happen again. I really hope not, but there is a risk. If Kaleidescape offered digital rights and the highest audio/video quality on their titles, I'm all in.

I am not willing to sacrifice a good user experience for the lack of digital rights and/or movie audio/video quality. Simply put, a consumer should be able to pay a reasonable price to own a title and watch it on any device they want. Get digital rights and audio/video quality resolved and they have a winner. I would be all in. I do see the progress in movie quality, but the lack of digital rights puts me out of purchasing ANY new content from the Kaleidescape Store. At this point, I'm purchasing all physical media to get the top quality and digital rights. I shouldn't have to do that with a system like Kaleidescape. For us, there is no point in having a digital delivery system we can't put new content on.

Because of these reasons, I refuse to purchase anything from the K-Store until they resolve digital rights. As much as I love the Kaleidescape concept and experience, if digital rights are not resolved soon, I will be selling my Strato. I hope it doesn't come to that, but if digital rights aren't resolved soon, there is no point in keeping a Strato just so we can't put new content on it. I really, REALLY hope Kaleidescape fixes this by the end of the year. I'm pulling for them in a big way. If not, at the end of the year you can PM me if interested.

............... and reading between the lines, you're still searching for a suitable playback mechanism that ticks all your boxes. I doubt there will ever be an all in one solution.

Actually, I have found one (Nvidia Shield/Kodi). Perfect? No, but then neither is the K product. The "rotating" screen wall on the K system drove me nuts and the other choice (alphanumeric listing) was a step in the wrong direction.

As you well know, and as I have stated ad nauseam, if K fixed the key issues I have with them (the above not being one of them), I would again be a K customer. But in the few years I have been gone, they have not fixed them, and some, they won't. My approach, gives me what I want: 100% disc-less; 100% disc backup; direct access to individual sub-folders (4K movies, BR movies, concert videos, etc); the most up-to-date audio; a user interface more than good enough for my wife to operate.

The initial ripping of 400+ movies was a pain in the rear, but now, from the time a movie shows up at our home until it is ripped and ready to watch is somewhere be 20 and 50 minutes. Is it a Kaleidescape system? No, but now, more than close enough. And a DIY approach is really not a serious threat to K. The masses would have no interest (and probably not the time nor inclination) to do what I have done. K's competition is themselves and streaming.

I know you think I am a K basher, but I (and my wife) really LOVED owning that product when it was for all of my 1080P stuff, but the strategy they chose when they moved to 4K doesn't work for me.
