Looks like all 11 Star Wars movies are on sale for $13.99 each, I'm assuming because May 4th is coming up: https://www.kaleidescape.com/movie-s...tion/star_wars

I've noticed most Disney movies have been greatly reduced, for example Marvel and Pixar 4K Steelbooks being as low as $7.99 at Best Buy lately. I think with Disney + having the majority of these in 4K (albeit inferior), the discs simply aren't selling.

It's tough to try and equate physical pricing vs. digital pricing because disc pricing is driven by concepts like shelf space and inventory which don't affect digital media. A lot of times I think when discs are getting blown out or discounted, it's not a matter of discounting the content, but instead reflects the dynamics of that box sitting there.

That said, Disney priced Onward at like $26.99 vs. $33.99 in the Kaleidescape store too. This Star Wars pricing is a bit lower than I thought might be coming. I hope it's a good sign of Disney rethinking digital pricing overall.

Yup Disney has individual Star Wars movies for $9.99 on Vudu and MoviesAnywhere with a lower price for the bundle.

Pray for all of our healthcare providers, food manufacturing and delivery workers, all of whom are doing their best at great risk to help us survive the current Covid-19 virus crisis.

I have had a combined digital library with my daughter and son in law for a number of years. Thus, depriving them of the ability to watch what I buy from the comfort of their own home is something I don’t do anymore. For example, I recently bought Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 4K Atmos quality from Vudu. That way it is part of our digital library, which it would not have been if I had bought the film from Kscape.

It’s true that the quality of both Kscape’s video and audio are superior to the streamed version. That said, though, streamed 4K Atmos is quite good these days, so I will happily live with the (slight) inferiority of streaming quality. The net effect of all this is that I will be spending no more money at Kscape for any purpose until and unless they start including digital rights again.

I have found that mid and high frequencies sound quite good with streamed Vudu or Apple TV movies in Atmos but low frequencies often suffer. I have even replayed scenes and have been blown away by how muddy or nonexistent 50Hz and below bass presence.

I would love to go all digital but for any movie with gun shots, explosions or falling buildings etc I am disappointed. Hopefully as our internet speeds increase there will be higher bandwidth streaming Atmos.

The odd thing is that many Netflix tv shows sound really, really good in the low frequency department.

Streaming companies are targeting at the volumes - 95% of folks don't care how the audio is - the millennials like to watch Star Wars Skywalker on iPhones and are looking for instant gratification through streaming.
We are a minority looking for bit for bit audio and video - Kaleidescape provides that and the streaming companies may not find any value in providing that.

That's the big question is if Apple, Vudu, Amazon, or whomever decides to make a high bit rate streaming tier. They certainly could, but they may never care to.

That plus the waning physical media market, makes Kaleidescape the option for us. A possible niche monopoly on high fidelity content delivered to the home as we go forward.

Apologies if this point was made already and I missed it but seems like the current pandemic situation is an ideal opportunity for K to rekindle negotiations with the studios they are missing from inventory. Granted we Kscape owners are a niche portion of the market compared to ATV owners and the streaming services to the extent those are larger distribution channels, but with theaters closed we / Kscape become the highest quality distribution channel.

Theaters may reopen but will need to be setup different with more spacing = less capacity and likely higher prices per person to cover fixed costs like rent etc.

If K isn’t on the horn trying to grow their library they are asleep.

They have been doing an amazing job acquiring content for the store and more is regularly happening. Kaleidescape is very much "awake" to this.

This is going to be real interesting to watch IMO. Theaters are going to be in a really tough spot going forward for some time. I think the studios will find ultimately that they don't need them as much as they thought. I believe studios have wanted to reach customers directly like this for some time, but contracts and relationships have held things back. Now that theaters have become defunct, there's latitude to experiment.

I think permanent change is coming here and Kaleidescape should be in great position to capitalize.

Hi J

Can you get some timeline on when that first 20th Century Fox Atmos title will be uploaded, the one Cheena referenced on the owners forum?

And further, will they start updating NBCU titles to ATMOS/DTS:X soon? The implication was they would be first, and 20th Century hit a covid hiccup but would proceed after that...

As I understand things, Fox overall and NBCU existing content updates are both affected by COVID. It has to do with manual certification/release processes that cannot be completed right now. Kaleidescape is in California. I'm not sure where the Fox or NBCU release staff is. There's no definitive timeline to get as it's based on the state/federal government work restrictions, being binned as essential workers or not, and stay at home orders. Of course, none of this stuff is really essential (despite how much we want it). I know I'd really like catalog updates though as our family hasn't yet watched "Dolittle" nor "Abominable" yet.

I do understand that new releases coming out from NBCU are expected to have the codecs. "The Invisible Man" is in the store as a pre-order. Looks like there's a few UHD disc releases planned from NBCU soon ("Jaws", "Blues Brothers", etc.) that of course Kaleidescape should update to UHD as well. So hopefully we'll see it on those compared to whatever codecs are on the discs.

The good news is the business and technical hurdles they've been dealing with have been resolved. The bad news is we are stuck waiting behind COVID for now.

I was referring to the test movie from 20th Century that Cheena said was in hand, and apparently would be made available in a shorter time frame, and that we'd all be pleased to see

That title is similar to why we got Hobbs. It's the one chosen to complete a working process with Fox. That work is set internally, hence Cheena commenting that they have it playing successfully, but it requires review with Fox in order to release it publicly to the store and then move on to more titles. I think we can reasonably assume that there's a manual/in-person step.

I'm surprised that K-Scape hasn't gotten in on the rental window for first run movies like The Hunt and Invisible Man. Since they control the store AND the hardware, it can't be that difficult to have a download that has an expiration after first playback. I can do this with iTunes on a portable device, even when it is off the network (I used to rent movies to take on submarine rides all the time that would do this). Feels like a missed opportunity for a digital platform like the Strato/K-Scape market.

agree and this thing discuss these days to have this type especially some movie are not worth to rewatch again and I think this thing will happen last 6 month we saw great things come to the store last was the lack of immersive audio from universal and Fox and I think rent option will be great for PVOD as thing will become more after the succeed in Trolls
