Curiously I've got an issue with lip sync frequently with my P100 processor, which shares the same room perfect software as the Mc. I notice it with my htpc that is use the most frequently. Def doesn't occur with my 8802 system either. I don't run enough blu rays in that system to know if my oppo does it too.

Your opinions please...
I know in advance I'm going to have to change speaker levels for center and rear surrounds after running room perfect. Should I leave the levels pre adjusted before running RP or just reset and change them each time after running RP.

I've been testing the latest update for a few days now. So far perfect. No pops, nothing. Everything decodes perfect.

No need to re-run RP.

The MX160 GUI is very different from the MX150. There's no testing tones that you can adjust each speaker with a SPL meter like the MX150. However you can set the gains individually for each speaker in the speaker setup.

I'll wait after RP is done if I was you. This unit sounds very different from the MX150. To my liking base is better handle in this unit, with more control and less distortion.

What is the version number of the firmware update you have been running?

Thanks

Thank you for letting me know. I am a bit intrigued by your message. Is the firmware you mention a beta version and if so when do you think that we less 'privileged' can get our hands on it? I do look forward to have a fully functional unit.

Any more details would be gratefully received.

Best regards

What are the primary differences between the new MX160 vs the MX122? Starting to look at getting a new AVP. I have a Lumagen Radiance Pro and therefore will be using for primarily audio. Thanks. SJ

I went from the 121 to the 160. Room Perfect is the major difference.

The comparative with the MX122 to MX160 is that the 122 is more closely related to a Marantz AVP like the 8802A. The 160 is more proprietary and as stated has the superiority of Room Perfect RC. I personally wouldn't spend that kind of money on the 122 when you can buy an 8802A like myself and a few other MX150/1 owners have done as a hold over before committing to another high end unit like the 160 or similar.

I'm not familiar with RP. What are the primary difference between Audyssey and RP? Sorry for the basic question. I'm currently using an AVP with XT32. Thanks. SJ

Good info. Interesting as McIntosh is no longer owned by D&M?

This is true, however I'm sure they have kept a beneficial relationship to be able to supply components for certain models as is often the case. If you look at the car industry, this is exactly what happened when Daimler Benz demerged with Chrysler and the platform sharing agreement with Mercedes and Jeep.

Good analogy - I was thinking of the parallel to the Daimler-Benz and post-divestment Chrysler platform sharing agreements as well.

Hey guys,

I'm new to the home theatre world and have purchased a MX160, MC303 with Focal Viva utopias. Only a 3.0 setup right now while I wait for my subwoofer. I'm still trying to figure out what I want for the complete 5.1 setup.

I loaded up my MX160 last night and it seems quite buggy. Froze a few times and didn't work that well. Worked better while logging in through the IP address.

Where can I download the latest firmware? Also, RP doesn't complete its setup because it keeps looking for speakers that aren't there and says it cannot find its peal... well, it doesn't exist thats why. Any suggestions?

Why is it so difficult to get the latest firmware from Mcintosh!

You would think they would have addressed this by now with auto updates from the web interface.

It really hasn't been that difficult for me. My dealer gets an email from Chuck Hinton of McIntosh when a new "official" version has been released, and the email includes a link to Dropbox where the new firmware can be downloaded. My dealer then forwards me the email.

As of a couple of days ago, Version 1.0.7-7 is still the latest official version, and it has been out for almost a month. I understand that McIntosh has sent links for some later, non-"official" versions to a few people who are having specific issues, and I also understand that a new official version is due out "soon".

I agree that it would be very preferable to be able to just have the unit search for a new version and then download it directly to the unit like OPPO does with their Blu-ray players. For better or worse, McIntosh continues to emphasize the involvement of their dealers. I am fortunate to have a great dealer which is why I have used him for all of my McIntosh purchases since 1994.

I fixed a lot of the issues. Updated to the latest firmware and everything just seemed to magically work. Room Perfect is amazing.. my only experience has been with XT32 and I noticed quite a difference. Impressive!

Looking seriously at this unit but wondered how much I should be concerned about the lack of the latest HDMI capabilities? Since I have a Lumagen Pro I won't need this? How would they ever update this unit? Firmware can't update HDMI chips.... SJ

If you buy now, you risk that the current 160 will never be upgraded. Best to wait for a hardware revision announcement or the release of the presumed 161. I am sitting this out until one of those events occur.

I think MX-122 is more likely to be based on Marantz 7702 MK2. 8802 is a 13.2ch SSP whereas 7702 is 11.2ch like the MX-122.

Agree with G-REX, I would at least hold of til March. Let's see how the new UHD BD player will be implemented.

I would like to believe McIntosh will update the HDMI ports on the MX-160 with a hardware upgrade and the already upgraded new units will be re-badged to MX-161 when this happens. I believe the revision between 150 and 151 was very minor too.

Got feedback from Mcintosh that the MX122 is based upon the 8802a. However with their own DAC, analog section and power supply. They also build the boards in Binghamton. Assume this was very similar to what they did with the previous models. If the MX160 were upgraded with a newer HDMI chip and the ability to handle HDR it would be a stable platform for years to come.... SJ

I am pretty sure 7702 and 8802 are very alike in design and McIntosh like to refer to the higher one.

Mx-121 was definitely based on 7005. 121 and 151 shares the same components in their power, analog and dac sections. Same dacs and op amps. 121 has an analog pass through

RP is impressive indead. I'd recommend to run it via web instead of the setup memu. In this unit RP is implemented different than previous versions. Thru the setup menu I noticed RP skips to measure the LFE output as a channel. Make sure your subs volume is properly set before running RP. It can cuase serious LFE sound quality if not done correctly.

How do you guys think they would go about a HW update? Also, I assume our units were not designed for such a modification. So would the mod affect the unit in a bad way

They could use multiple 9ghz receivers in differential on the main board, this would allows 18ghz needed on the recieving end. Hdmi inputs can be on seperate cards, possibly in groups of 2, 4 or all. Each card would have its own serializer and a mutiplexer would select input. If they ever had this upgrade in mind, such design isn't very difficult. Now the fpga needed to process 18ghz video will need to have more gates. If the fpga isn't large enough, then a whole daughter board upgrade will be needed. Large enough fpga were available long before this product was released. The most effective was is swapping hdmi i/o and having a large fpga and two or so 9hz receivers in differential. Lumagen pro has this type design, input and outputs are on separate hdmi board (each with 2 ports).

This looks like a fairly significant update. The release notes are as follows:

Firmware History:
-Many improvements to format playback and mode processing.
-Improved Audio and Video input switching.
-Added Zone B setup and control selections.
-RoomPerfect calibration improvements.
-Adds the ability to assign 14 McIntosh legacy IR commands for discrete input switching by 3rd party remote.
-HDCP 2.2 repeater functionality, for 4K sources and TV’s. (Roku 4K, etc.)
-Added video conversion to 4K (2160p), for 50/60Hz input framerates.
-Added 3D video pass-through.
-Bug fixes on OSD menu and web interface.
-Front panel 4K LED lights for incoming 4K video signal.
-HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) enabled for certain TV’s. Excludes some Samsung and LG models which require full audio support over CEC. (Turn Off TV’s internal speakers to enable.)
